Thanks SwimJay ! I really don't see it as having a problem, but having the right gear according to my expedition, hike or adventure. The 1st and foremost, I have 4 daughters and 10 grand-kids of all ages, I take on many adventures of all sorts, 6 grand daughters with special needs like privacy, showers, etc., 4 grand sons, that are wide open and always ready for paw-paw's next adventure. Yep ! no problem here, just a lot of gear eval and fun ! I am 59, almost retired computer scientist and I buy whatever I want now that my 4 daughters are finished with school, college, weddings, etc. and diggin in my back pocket !

This is seriously disappointing. Only 7% off? This is not what Massdrop is about, this is a MinusculeDrop at best. The duplex is a good product but it's sad to see such poor discounts on Massdrop. I decided to get Dan Durston's XMid tent instead, which is also currently on Massdrop. Similar or superior quality to the duplex - only slightly heavier at 791.7 gr -, but is only 199$ total (including stakes!!!) for something that is ultralight, durable and well designed. Sorry Duplex, I'll pass. Edit: indeed the XMid is a 1P, but the 2P will be available next year. I should have specified it.

I have the Camo Triplex Tent and have used it extensively in South Louisiana. It is huge ! I had 1.43oz Cuben Fiber for Tub Floor which is more abrasion resistant. I got the Triplex instead of Duplex because it will fit 2 people and their backpacks in tent as opposed to putting backpacks in vestibule. I used Triplex on Appalachian Trail section hike from Georgia to Tenn. It rained, snowed, sleeted and some of the strongest winds it held up well and I always stayed dry. No problem with condensation as it builds on the top and runs down and out the side mesh. It was a little noisey when rained but got used to it quick. 29oz 3 person tent. it is huge ! I paid $780 for this customized version of it. The duplex is great for 1 person with pack inside, but a squeeze with 2 people and packs. Zpacks, what great products and company, the night picture is the use of black reflective-Line,

My boyfriend and I used a triplex over 1300 miles of the Appalachian Trail this summer. wouldn't trade "down" to a duplex for anything. That extra room is worth the $ and weight for two people imo, but just depends on what you prioritize.

redwoodrootsYeah ya right ! the Triplex is definitely worth the few extra dollars for the huge additional amount of living space. It's tiny additional weight to floor size ratio makes it truly worth it. I have the 2015 Triplex and used it in all various types of weather. Having 25 tents, the TRIPLEX it is my GOTO tent when backpacking long distances.

Does anyone know if Zpacks has offered their Cuben Fiber hammock tarp with or without doors on Massdrop recently? If not, is there some way of requesting a specific drop? Thanks!

I have one that I bought about a year ago. Mine is the .74oz Spruce version. I love it. It's a palace for one. Weighs ~21 oz. - Great way to get your base weight down. It's a little trickier to set up than a free standing tent, but it only took me a couple of times before I can do it quickly. I've never had any trouble with condensation. If the price isn't an insurmountable barrier for you, I highly recommend it! This 'sale' isn't all that special though. Only saves $26 vs Zpacks website. But that's about the biggest discount I've ever seen. (Zpacks has, on occasion, had sales on their website.) That's the way Massdrop is: Some really good deals, some so-so deals, and some items are cheaper elsewhere; just like any sales channel.

jwsadauskasNo, that is not how this site works. The idea is that if we can produce enough sales the item can be purchased for a significant savings. Some items even have incentives for certain numbers sold. My point is that if they continue to allow companies to sell on this site without asking of them what they ask of us, then the site loses its mission statement and is no longer any better than a warehouse seller... and with that it loses its customer base that had originally came for its false advertisement. Its original claim was to "provide buyers the power to pool their purchasing power to buy products from manufacturers at a significant discounted price."

Sfaculak3I agree, that this drop, isn't great . There have been others, too that have been less than stellar deals. I was thoroughly unimpressed when I could buy the same thing on Amazon for a lower price. I also agree that if Massdrop too often veers from the group-buy / minimum quantity model, that they will be just another sales channel. But I don't judge Massdrop too harshly (yet). If they can make money on a deal like this and keep the lights on while I wait for that killer group buy, I can tolerate that - as long as it remains the exception and not the norm.

I've fantasized about Zpacks tents for a while, and I almost got one during a pretty generous Black Friday sale last year. But last October, I had snatched a Nemo Hornet 2P from Campsaver, complete with a free footprint for $300 (normal price would've been $370 for the tent alone plus $50 for the footprint). The Nemo is a freestanding two-person tent (kinda, the bottom has to be staked out no matter what), and weighs a mere 34 oz. The foot print is heavy; it weighs 7 oz, but you can bring a home-made polycro footprint that weighs nothing. Or you can tell your partner to carry the footprint, that's what I do. And she carries the poles too.
Still, i was tempted as hell to get the Zpacks Duplex, so I did my homework, and here's what I came up with:
The Zpack Duplex is 21 oz. Since I would rather have some privacy with my lady, I would order the camouflage, which would bring the weight up 1.5 oz. You still need to get 8 stakes, so add 1.5 oz to 2.7 oz., depending on which ultralight stakes you get from Zpacks. For the sake of playing safe, I'd get the heavier ones, the titanium V stakes, which are .33 oz each. Now, my tent would weigh 24.2 oz.
It's not freestanding, so I would either carry my trekking poles (I usually do) or buy two straight tent poles from Zpacks, which weigh 2.5 oz each. With the straight tent poles, my tent would now weigh 29.2 oz. Not bad. Recently, Zpacks released a freestanding tent upgrade for the Duplex. It's a simple, ingenious system of four tent poles that cost another $125 and weigh 10 oz. Now, let's say I would opt for the freestanding tent poles rather than the two straight poles. My freestanding Duplex tent now would weigh 34.2 oz. Still not bad, but it would now weigh as much as my Nemo.
Well, I was still tempted, since I usually bring my trekking poles with me. Realistically, my Zpacks Duplex would weigh 24.2 oz; which is 10 oz. lighter than my Nemo. Tempting.
So the next thing was to compare the space inside. The Zpacks Duplex claims to be 48" x 90". However, I'm not sure how much of it is realistic when it comes down to actual space, since the tent has a bathtub. My Nemo Hornet 2P is shorter, it's 85 inches long, but it's still quite long. I'm 5'8', and a 7' long tent is quite long. The Nemo is 51" wide at the head and 45" wide at your feet. Even at 51" wide, it's still a bit tight for two people. So the Zpacks would not only be quite tight at 48", but I would also worry that the bathtub style could make it even tighter than that.
After beating the subject to a pulp, I was devastated to agree that it would be a waste of money to pay an additional $355 (camo version + 8 stakes) of what I paid for my Hornet tent so I could shed 10 oz. And it would be a narrower tent as well.
I also own a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3. It's huge cause it's for three people, but realistically, it's for two people who want comfort. It weighs 56 oz (3.5 pounds), but if I'm backpacking with someone else, we can split the weight in two. I can also split the weight of the Nemo, The Zpacks you can't split, and though I'm aware you can split weight with other stuff, it almost always leads to arguments of who is bringing more weight.
So, even though I wanted this tent so bad, logic tells me I should stick to what I have because I have a much better deal. But it is an awesome tent. If I ever get around to buy a Zpacks tent, it will probably be the Solplex at 15.5 ounces. Now I'm talking at least a pound in savings if I go alone into the wild.
They say we decide to buy on emotion, and then justify it with logic. I had enough emotion to buy the Zpacks Duplex, but when I tried to justify it with logic, it just didn't add up. But it's still an awesome tent, and if it is for you, get it now.
Another full disclosure. I heard cuben fiber is pretty much waterproof. My Nemo, even with the original footprint, didn't do too well in pouring rain. There was a small puddle inside the tent in the morning. Not too bad, given it was pouring, but nonetheless, it got wet inside.
Aloha and do what makes you happy!

Thanks Greg. I'm aware of the Skyscape, and it's a great value, but I'm keeping my eyes open to come across a good deal on a Soloplex from Zpacks. I'm in no hurry cause I've got good, light tents. As far as the EE bags, great tip. I pretty much know almost all of UL brands, but I wasn't aware of EE, because I live in Hawaii, and it doesn't get too cold where I go. I would love to find someone to do the AT together, and in such case I'll be looking for a new UL sleeping bag. Another UL gear I'm really tempted to get is the Zpacks Arc Haul backpack. But I already have an Exos 58, and I just snatched a Klymit Motion 60 here this week. I also own an Atmos 65, but I'm not sure if I'm keeping it, the only reason would be to use it in the El Camino, cause it's large and sturdy, and it can take a lot of abuse. But it's 4.5 pounds heavy...

@JerkyKen - The value of this drop certainly depends on your state (taxation) and country (shipping costs). We haev a lot of international members who can sometimes benefit more than US-based members. And Zpacks has a lot of great products, so if you plan on ordering more than this tent, then you're right that it's obviously better to go straight there to get everything all at once. Good point!
And it's good to see you here. But why it's taken you so long to post man?! Help us build this community with your knowledge. Stop spending your time hoping Dr J returns to bring bpl to it's former glory. ;)

DannyMilksWell I do think the minor discount shows Joe's business savvy. Sell a few more through a still new source that has customers that might not see his products. You have to admit that a single digit discount is probably not hurting him at all. BTW I am happy with my recent purchase through Massdrop. I am just pretty well kitted out Danny. Hope to see you soon.

I am thrilled to work with Zpacks on bringing you one of the most highly recommended, most sought-after tents available today. The Duplex sets the bar for amount of protected, livable space in such a light, compact package. This is very highly rated in numerous polls and I get personal requests all the time to make this happen. So here it is finally!
A few notes on this drop: 1) The Discount - This comes up frequently with many American-based cottage companies that sell directly to the customer. They simply don't have a large margin built in, so any discount they offer is based on efficiencies gained from working with us. It may not be the 30-50% discount you may see on many of our other drops, but 7% is still better than 0%.
2) Join the Group. Or don't. - If you want a different fabric or color or setup, then I recommend you go straight to zpacks.com to order. They're a great company to work with and will be happy to accommodate you like every other satisfied customer. However please don't bug them for the Massdrop price - you either join the group buy and get our price, or you are a normal customer of theirs. You can't have your cake and eat it too. I unfortunately have to make this explicit because I have heard back from other ultralight cottage companies that a few of our members have been trying to get the best of both worlds through various means.
3) Cuben Fiber - Yes, I'm very aware that this has gone through a rebranding and is now called Dyneema Composite Fibers, however that name is too new for most people to know, and too long to roll of the tongue. So we intentionally kept the old name in our tent description.
4) This is not the tent for everyone. It is very pricey, requires trekking poles to set up, and is made of a material that needs to be cared for properly. However, my friends who own this exact tent absolutely love it and use it all the time. At 21 oz it's hard to beat for such a roomy 2-person shelter.

DannyMilksWill go in my piggy bank for a Triple Zero sleeping bag... pretty much as expensive as the Duplex tent... Could be interesting for you to have a look at their products ranges: high-end quality down, light, design by and for outdoors fanatics... small production but great products for mountaineers, trekkers and hikers... Same spirt as Zpacks too some extends... http://www.triplezero.fr/eng/sleeping-bags-duvets.php
