Topping D50 DAC via USB from Mac to Definitive Technology SuperCube III to Klipsch R-51Ms. Horn speakers, great bass, wow, I LOVE IT!!! And I'd love to tube roll to experiment. Any suggestions?
Four months after receiving the APPJ amp I am noticing a faint but audible high pitched whistle through the tweeters of my speakers. Think crickets.
Researching tube amplifier's possible problems brought up several possible causes:
1) old/defective tubes. I swapped around all the tubes of this unit several times - first the driver tubes, then the output tubes. No difference. I swapped around my matisse clone preamp out for a little bear P5 tube buffer and it was the same. so...
2) possible microphonics. I dont know about this one. Seems unlikely. Microphonics result in feedback not something subtly bothersome, but loud whine like baby screaming not like many crickets.
3) ground loops? really? no I dont think so.
How else to solve this? Unit has no warranty. Massdrop can't / won't help.
My wife wants to get into records. She says the turn table that she wants says it needs a pre-amp. I don’t really know what that is. Can I just buy this and connect the turn table to it? Then obviously connect this to speakers
My APPJ mini is defective. Both the smaller tubes made a popping sound when I first fired it up, got really bright then dimmed. It works sort of, but the power output is way down. With the volume cranked up all the way, it still doesn't get very loud with any of the 4 pairs of speakers I tried using - and I do not listen to my music very loud AT ALL, I'm using this in a nearfield situation in my small office space.
I'm still waiting to hear back from a "specialized team" at Massdrop who is supposed to be handling this. Has anyone else experienced this sort of issue?
The bugle boy is reference to sought after vintage tubes. Which if you are a tube head and know what it is in reference to, is even more eye-rolling.
I'm pondering picking one up to power an old pair of JBLs that I've used as nearfields. Or to power some passive single driver reference cubes.
If I do, I will certainly sand that crappy artwork off of the front.
Remove Corny Graphic?
I'm wondering if any one has removed the corny screen print graphics on the front of the unit. The script font and the anthropomorphized Tube playing a horn are a bit too much for my tastes.
mmmmmmdropToo much to go into here. "Tube Rolling" i.e. trying different tubes in your amp is one of the side benefits/activities hobby of tube gear besides the great sound. Most of the new tubes sound inferior to the ones made in the in the 50-80's. Construction, material quality, (some even had gold pins!) skill in assembly all were factors, Plenty of "new old stock" tubes are available from tube retailers and eBay to support your quest in achieving the perfect sound balance for you. Have fun.
SchattNo power cable, no speaker cable.
Speaker cable personal choice, I used some ofc speaker cable I already had in the garage placed plugs on each end and connected to some Tannoy Saturn speaker.
