First I am 100 audio for fun. Lets do a blind list every dac you ever bought when you were young poor how did your first dac do when history rolled on. I love you guys but you can figure this out at the inside of headphone and sound mods from tubes. What balanced mean ? why does it exsit? it is not a trial and error process at all.

These are my daily drivers, and Brainwavz XL Hybrids really tightened everything up. Pushed the midrange a bit more forward and boosted the bass to where I rarely go past one click open. Puts them into $200+ territory, but worth the extra expense IMO. I prefer a neutral signature and emphasis on detail, and the pad upgrade puts them just on the bright side of that. Aftermarket cable is a must, as well, since the included ones are cumbersome and/or heavy.

I used to live a block from a headphone, home hifi, messenger bag store on Valencia in San Francisco. Can't recall the name but it's a block from Paxton Gate.
They had these, the DT770 and the usual Audio Technica and other lifestyle brands.
I wanted to like these, because I really like heavy bass on hip hop and heavy metal. Not so much on classical, jazz and ambient electronic. However the sound gave me the impression that there is no acoustic damping material in the cavity behind the driver. Very boxy and unpleasant.
The DT770 has that telltale 4k notch. But it is a very narrow notch, and I actually like the sound of those.
Honestly my favorite headphones for sound always end up being open back models that don't fold.
AKG 240M, Grado SR80e etc. I wish I could find some solid closed back cans that compare.

CalaverasgrandeGive the DT990 pros a try sometime. They have somewhat recessed mids, intense treble, and a good amount of bass. I use them daily, the open back design gives a nice large soundstage too.

CalaverasgrandeRecently purchased the dt770 and hifi 4xx. Earstudio es100 will take the dt770 to very manageable levels. Paired with all my headphones including ath ad700x and m50x, I have no complaints. Hifiman 4xx is sublime paired with es100, but lacks the thump of the dt770.

The Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros are some of the worst headphones ever created. The bass switch is a useless gimmick and the cans sound fundamentally bad. They have that same nasty tonality as the Sennheiser Momentum 1.0s, but worse and more emphasized. They're a stain on Beyerdynamic. And look closely at the cable, it's a proprietary fat plastic end with a special lock that you can't easily swap with other cables, and the Custom One Pros are notorious for poor quality control and broken cables that lose audio on one side. These are one of those cans where if someone positively reviews them, I know I'll never align with that reviewer and won't trust them anymore.

dm94aq7I agree on the tonality part. Yes, they have some issues. I got an aftermarket cable. I have tried a couple of pads on them too. Still trying to see how to make em sound good. I'll update if I'm able to at any point. Yes, I am talking about THESE not the One Pro... but the Custom Studio.

The "bass switch" actually effects the amount of low end you get. Sure they are not the best sounding headphones out there, but they are far from being bad. Aftermarket cables fit fine, I use the V-MODA BoomPro Microphone
cable to use them while talking with people and playing games. Far better option then the majority of "gaming headphones" out there.
I have owned them since early 2013, I work overseas in a war zone, they get tossed in to my backpack and used on a regularly. No problems with failures or any thing breaking.
Just a point of view from someone who's uses the Custom One Pros daily...

BingobootsHey, I have a set from a few years ago I modded with wood cups for my girlfriend. I used dekoni hybrid DT pads. These filter around 1db in the 4000-5000 region and boost the subbass by around 2 db. They widen the sound-stage minutely. They do not hinder clarity or imaging. They are a comfort upgrade and give it a slightly more fun sound (these are already potentially fun headphones with the bass ports).

I've tried every model of DT770, DT880, and DT990, along with the Custom One Pro and Custom Street. The Custom One Pro sound very similar to the DT770, but the COP has more bass and the DT770 has that fun, hollow plastic acoustics. The Custom Studio NEVER goes on sale, and it's always at $199. A twenty dollar discount does not sway me, however, when the Custom Game is a 16 ohm equivalent with a mic that goes for under $150 sometimes. Th Custom Studio just has velour pads. I would say get these if you don't want the fun DT770 sound and prefer detachable cable. For me, the exposed wires in the headband mean I will not wear Beyerdynamics out anyways, so the DT770 80 ohm on sale for $130 was a better deal, and having a detachable cable is not worth an extra $50. For $20 more, sure. These should drop at $150.

Only thing I can think of for that rationale is living in an area where there's a realistic worry about somebody snipping them to be a dick...but if that's the case, you've got bigger problems.

LG23I just worry I'll snatch them up after placing them down one day and I'll rip the cable. Also I hike sometimes, I don't want a branch catching on the wires.
