I usually take the time to write a review when when something exceeds my expectations or when I feel extremely disappointed. Sadly this time I do not feel very happy with this purchase. I bought 2 because I really liked the concept. However the third time I used one of them it broke, I'm guessing that in part was due to the unstable issue, but most of all I find it to be poorly constructed, with weak materials.

No, they just send me a new one. I tossed the broken one after I received the replacement. Apologies for my delayed response.

An additional $21.75 to ship to Australia. Is this an indication of how fragile the product is, that it needs very special attention to packaging to survive the journey?

I wouldn't say it's standard... Amazon, Ebay, and Walmart all disclose the total cost of the item before you checkout or add to cart. Even REI mentions it on the product page.
I'm a domestic customer so I can't speak to the experience of international customers or what they are seeing, but I was annoyed with trying to purchase a $14 item only to learn that is only 2/3 of the landed cost.
tedYes the total cost of the "item" is disclosed. But not the shipping. If it says free shipping sure, but if it doesn't say free shipping you can't assume shipping is free. Or unless they have flat rate shipping. But most sites, if they are charging shipping, need to know where it is shipping before they can tell you how much it is.

wow, shipping is >50% of cost. yikes!
It should be $24.95 on Amazon.
DannyhammockI should have clarified, I don't mind spending four dollars more on Amazon so I don't have to wait at least two more weeks for a shipping notice from Massdrop.

Do Not buy this. Very unstable. Too tall and wide for the leg span of the stool. Bad design flaw because the seat bar actually comes out of the clamp and I bought the XL for a 120lb person. Very unsafe. Not meant at all for camping, fishing, or hiking. Can only be used on a flat even surface. Very disappointed in Massdrop because I can't return to them for a refund after on only a few minutes of use. Massdrop should test products before selling.
Tracy3Byer of Maine has sold thousands of these stools to very happy customers for many years now, who use them in a variety of settings. It is important to understand the product and your intended use. I think it would be best to use the stool on a flat surface, but we do sell lots of stools to people using them for camping, fishing, and hiking without complaints. We proudly stand behind our products and warranty against manufacturers defects. Byer of Maine has been around since 1880 and will always stand behind the product, offer returns or replacements for defective products, and our goal will always be for 100% customer satisfaction. I just received my shipment today. I have to say I am completely disappointed in this product. It is literally a pile of junk. Weighing only 125 Lbs, I expected this stool to be a reasonably stable set for me. Unfortunately, it is very unstable and I find it more comfortable to simply squat than to attempt to set in this thing. My disappointment with this item goes well beyond the item itself. First, I would hope Massdrop would better vet the items they promote for quality. This is the number one thing I look for from a service like Massdrop. The next thing I want is a good value, in this case, the item is available for substantially less cost from other vendors and with no wait.
The only good thing about this item is that since it is small, it will take up little space in the garbage can.
I am waiting for a couple more drops to arrive from Massdrop, but it this item is any example of the experience, there will be no future participation from me.

Interested to know what the real benefit is over a tripod stool like the REI trail stool that looks to be an ounce lighter. I like the price, but once shipping is added there isn't any cost savings.
G-DeuceWell... it doesn't crush your nuts if you're a guy compared to the tripod stools. I'd say that's a plus.
Another_Overpriced_DropSeconding the crushed nuts on tripod stools.

Check this youtube review out. There's a particular way you need to sit on it...

arislanHow to sit starts about minute 6 - the single leg needs to be in front of you rather than behind you. Then comments not to twist on it as the hub then flexes.

Some experience advice: I owned the regular version of this stool and loved it, but a friend used it and I wasn't aware of its weight limits or her weight (and being a Her, it's not something I'd ask) but she snapped one of the seat support bars while sitting on it sewing. So my advice is, despite almost doubling of the item's weight (~1lb to ~2lb), it may be worth going with the XL instead of the regular just in case you have a solid friend who uses it, or you sit down on it with your camping backpack still on, someone stumblefalls on it while drunk at the campfire, etc. Once broken, game over. Glad this drop came about as I'm getting two. It's a great, compact stool you can toss in or tie on the side of your backpack. Would be nice if it had MOLLE straps on the side of the bag for backpack attaching, but I'm kinda nitpicking. Can maybe sew some on myself.
Send me an email and we'll work something out for you. danh@byerofmaine.com

I personally have the Kijaro dual lock and the chair is 10X better than this one at almost the same price.

Will888On Amazon The Kijaro is a full size chair with arms and I think cup holders. And weighs 9.5 lb. So not a camping stool. Compare apples with apples. Watch the vid and see how small the Trilite folds down. You certainly can't pack the Kijaro on a backpack trip.
