Holy moley! These were the arx a1b a while ago right? I remember the port in the back for tuning it (dont know much about that) dude who sold them (really nice guy BTW) said they were moving sites etc and were the same. I was really surprised to see this dropped because not many knew about it.
Chane models A1rx-c, A2rx-c, and A3rx-c are 8 ohm designs. I still highly recommend amps with high instantaneous current - when amp-shopping, look for much higher short term power into 4 ohms than the static 8 ohm rating. The A5rx-c is a 6 ohm system.

I have both, the Preface and the A1 and the A1 (still breaking in) is close. The Preface and Encore combo is, in one word, phenominal. I am looking forward to having the A1 WITH the Preface to see how they integrate, but were purchased for my MBR system.
The A1rx-c are quite literally the best sounding bookshelves that I myself have heard, regardless of price. Once you reach the quality of sound that speakers like these produce, anything that more money can buy, will be incremental at best. They may be able to be measured higher/'better', but the human ear does have its limits.
As for asthetics, these are not ugly but they are not pretty either. They are speakers. It would be nice if they had limited runs (to save on costs) of a little nicer finish, but as is, I have no complaints at all, though I did remove the name plate as they distracted (to me) from the overall appearence.
If I had a desk big enough, I would LUV a pair, as these would be great over the setup used now.

ZeosPanteraOh my god, i've seen your videos before on youtube. When you played planetside2 and you were like, " the sound isn't working" then you hear the big boom and you were like woahhhh haha. It was funny. Could you recommend me a an affordable amp for these speakers that is affordable and does it job? Thank you!

they take a while to break in... at least around 50-100 hours...you'll have to be patient...they already beat more expensive bookshelves before break in ...after break in, they are amazing....

yes...i use them as side surrounds...i actually got a flat response after break in according to audyssey ..audyssey apparently didn't do much eq-ing on it....that Z review guy probably didn't have time to run it for 80 hours or he got a really low powered amp ...things start to get really clear and open in the last few hours of break in...afterwards they sounded kind of like electrostatic speakers....the comments that the Z review guy was making doesn't correspond to what I hear after break in....i think i recalled hearing him say that he ran it for 8 hours + played it a few times/days before the review on a separate video.....so I doubt he had enough break in time on them...even if you play them 5 hours a day exclusively after school/work, it will take at least 2-3 weeks to break them in

I'm not sure if it was break-in or just moving to a slightly higher powered amp (from a 2W tube amp to a real 30W/ch from my Marantz 2230), but mine definitely blossomed a few days in. A true 30W/ch RMS with a couple dB of headroom is plenty of power for these.
The mids are fantastic, as you'd expect from a ribbon and a fast woofer. I play and sing, and am quite sensitive to irregularities in this range. These are flat as a ruler when it comes to frequency response, and they reproduce music objectively correctly - full stop. Not sure what more to say.
Concerning amplifiers, the A1rx-c is a true 8 ohm load, and rates at 85dB at 1W and 1M. It's an easy load - easier than most in the category - but with the way its built it can take some power too.
The SplitGap woofers use completely underhung voice coils, which means lots of thermal heat sinking from the surrounding copper and steel (in addition to the very long, linear excursion limit). The tweeter is also much more robust than usual.
We find the A1rx-c gets up and going with an amplifier as small as 20W (ours is PP triode with regulated stages) or 40W if it's high current transistor amp. If the amp rates close to double the peak power into 4 ohms as its 8 ohm rating, it's got good current reserve and even 40W runs the A1rx-c well. In more conventional AVRs, a good 80W+ design is fine.
The ideal realistic amplifier is probably the 40W - 65W class, 2-channel, with good current reserves. Basically run them not unlike how you'd run any 5.25" stand monitor of very good quality.

JonLaneI have the A5 and the A2 so I ordered 1 pair of these for surround and one for a friend. I love my other arx/chane speakers so I would highly recommend them . I use them in my home theater for music and movies. They are powered by a Denon X4000.
I can't speak to the 305s, but these have been my desktop speakers for a few months. Love them. Bought the towers and center channel for my TV setup. Now all we need is for Chane to make a sub...

Mine have arrived, 2 boxes 20lbs each. Connected them to my Emotiva UMC-100 and 100W/ch amp. I'm watching Edge of Tomorrow in stereo. Placement is not optimal with only 4 inches available behind the speakers. Bass was abundant requiring plugging of ports. These go amazing low for the size. After I let these break in for awhile, I'll move them to my main system for evaluation. My main system is an Emotiva UMC-200 processor, XPA-5 200w/ch amp in an 11'x25'x8' room. They'll be on Paradigm Premier J-30 lead filled stands with a lot more room to "breath". I'll report back sometime next week. So far I can't complain.

kfallsI've read that these speakers also have a longer than average break in period so they won't sound their best for at least a week. I'm so excited for these!

Seriously considering getting in at the last moment on this drop. I have a bit of an interesting setup as I have an open studio in NYC (60'x20') that narrows to 12' wide for ~40' of the center of the apartment.
I have a "living room" set up in the middle with a wall-mounted LCD and flanking Pioneer SP-22 speakers on stands and driven by a Onkyo TX-507 (I think). They have a very narrow sweet spot and my fianceé and I often have trouble with dynamics while watching TV. This makes the "home theater" 12' x 12' with a speaker distance of ~10ft but with completely open sides to the rest of the apartment.
1) Any idea if these would be powerful enough for couch-based apartment-friendly home theater?
2) It seems like these would be a serious step up in terms of sound quality from the Andrew Jones SP-22s I have right now... is that a fair assumption to make?
Thanks in advance for any responses... would like to jump in on this drop if it'd be a good fit!

jvivsHey jvivs,
You're sitting along the long side of your apartment, facing your TV/speakers that are ~10-12 feet away, correct? In the middle of the strange tapered rectangle? So you have something like 25-30 feet on either side of you? Sounds similar to an apartment a friend of mine had.
I have the Arx A3rx-c and while they definitely have a sweet spot with optimal imaging, it's nothing like my buddy's Martin Logans which have about an 8-12" pinpoint center for imaging. I'd say from the exact center point of the Arx, you still have decent imaging/soundstage around 2 feet to the left or right. Any more than that and you're obviously going to have the left or right dominate the opposite direction of sound, but that's going to happen with all speakers. As long as your tweeters are roughly ear height and you don't angle the speakers inward too far, you should be okay on the "sweet spot".
As far as power goes, these will more than fill your apartment with sound, provided you give them enough power. Jon could give you better numbers, but I'd say even 50-60W should make these loud enough without clipping. At 10-12ft, you won't need that much volume anyway.
I think the signature of the Arx line is definitely on the more neutral side of things, maybe even on the ever so slightly warm side of neutral. From what I understand, the Andrew Jones Pioneer line is a little more treble forward, so the signature of the sound will likely be the most obvious change -- but I could be completely wrong since I've never heard the Andrew Jones. I noticed more detail in the A3rx-c compared to my Polk Monitor70 even though the Polks are definitely brighter. The sound is more laid back with the Arx so sometimes I find myself straining to listen for certain details in songs when I can hear them clearly on my other systems (car & desk audio) which have speakers geared toward brighter sound signatures. This also makes the Arx less fatiguing to listen to overall. Keep in mind I have the A3rx-c, but I believe the tweeters are the same in the A1rx-c.
I will say that Jon & company over at Chane definitely know what they're doing, and Jon was extremely helpful and talked me through the strengths and details of the entire Arx lineup when I was choosing mine. They certainly make high quality products. It ends up coming down to whether you like the sound or not, and you'll only know once you try.
I'd say go for it. :)

jvivsI looked up your Pioneer SP-22 speakers. Compared to them, these Chanes:
Have the same efficiency (85 dB) so they should play equally loud, except... They have a higher impedance (8 ohms vs. 6) which is actually better for the amp. Might perform better/play louder due to this, even at the same efficiency. Their quoted frequency response is the same, but Pioneer doesn't qualify theirs so it's possible the A1rx-c may well perform better in the lower octaves.
Dynamics are harder to quantify, because this is more of an impulse response thing rather than raw frequency response. To really measure this you need an anechoic chamber. However, generally speaking planar designs wipe the floor with their conventional cousins in this category, so I would venture the A1rx-c would be superior here.

Can someone please come pair these to the audioengine p4 speakers?

limgravityPretty much everything else anywhere close to this price point uses conventional metal or silk dome tweeters. These are a different animal; the tweeter is planar and uses completely different physics to reproduce the high frequencies. Generally speaking planar speakers are fully superior to conventional designs - most who hear them don't go back.
The catch: they're usually EXPENSIVE! Even headphones which use this type of tech aren't usually available at this price point. There's no way the P4s can come anywhere close to the refinement these can offer. I can't speak for the SplitGap woofer tech, but you should consider these on the basis of the tweeter alone.
