OK ... while there's nothing wrong with having this offered as a drop, in no way is it "One of the winning options from the Fountain Pen Friendly Paper for Students poll". (which were almost exclusively A4 sized notebooks)
These notebooks weren't even mentioned in the poll and as far as I am concerned the A5 paper format is never going to be used for taking notes in lectures. By all means say it was inspired by the poll, but frankly, a little truth in advertising please! (And I personally feel that you obviously think I'm an idiot).
Frankly, this is a complaint I have about a lot of drops (and their portrayal of their relationship to polls).

@JonasHeineman - I really appreciate you addressing my concerns. At least I know someone heard! I certainly have no problem receiving an e-mail alert for something "similar" to something I voted for. And while this drop was not for me, I was glad to see it, and I'm glad that you're working hard with vendors. Hopefully the (relative?) success of this drop will persuade Clairefontaine that you are worthwhile working with. It may just be that I'm a stickler for language (and total and complete honesty), but really the only thing that irked me was statement itself. Thanks again!

Robert, I have noticed this exact thing happen more than once myself, and it is disenchanting, so say the least. I will keep looking but stepping back and doing my own buying. Paper can be so important depending on the task.
Btw, thanks for clarifying and sorry about the delay in responding. Despite it being the holiday season, the offerings have been so lackluster, wouldn't you say?
Cheers!

Too bad about the A5 size. I was excited to be able to get my school notebooks for next semester, but I prefer A4 or B5 for that.

These are excellent notebooks, just questionable prices. Also, it's important to note that Clairefontaine owns Rhodia, and Rhodia notebooks use Clairefontaine paper. Difference is that Rhodia notebooks have more texture while these are smoother.

Yes, the MSRP is overstated. Am I the only one who has a sense that Massdrop is collapsing under it's own weight?

Jacobus57Honestly, I bought 3 drops. One still seems like a good value. One I got a color didn't see elsewhere, similar pricing. One drop feels like not such a great deal. I definitely am not pulling the trigger very often.

You can get them for $7 each at Gouletpens, this doesn't seem like a good deal at all...

BeastleviathCultpens has them for $5.9 ($4.89 if you are outside of UK) with $12 shipping abroad (as opposed to $22 on MD).

How thick is paper, comparable to what?

helpfulThe paper is NOT the same as Rhodia. It's much smoother and noticeably heavier. While Exacompta owns both Clairefontaine and Rhodia now, they used to be different companies entirely, and the different brands are still made in their original separate factories [EDIT: not the same factories, but the same machines] and retain their own character. The exception is Rhodia's "R" premium line, which was launched after Exacompta acquired the brand. That line, and that line only, is the same paper as ivory-colored Clairefontaine paper. Both brands have great paper, so it comes down to personal preference. I personally find Rhodia an excellent paper, and I love it and use it all the time, but it's not luxurious to write on the way Clairefontaine paper is.

crosshatchThanks for the additional info. I thought they shared paper across all lines of products.

I am perfectly happy to buy at a reduced price but after only checking one other source ( Cult Pens) https://www.cultpens.com/i/q/CF43061/clairefontaine-1951-clothbound-notebook-a5-(148-x-210) I thought at first this must be the price for 10 # but I'm afraid, like some others this isn't quite such a bargain for only 5 # pads. I recently had comments from another member pooh poohing me for pointing out lower cost options for offers. I am often looking out for a bargain and I expect others are too, so what's wrong if I point others to where I find a better bargain than the one offered. I feel a bit sorry for anyone who has already paid and then sees the same item at a lower cost but I'm afraid that's life for you - as the late, great Sir Terry Wogan said 'As one door shuts another one closes'.

KarmabimIf you're in the US like me, I recommend buying only 5 at a time, as the postage will be a default of €10 instead of the €35 for 6 or more notebooks. Then if you're trying to go for a pack of 10, just buy 2 orders of 5. Additionally, they have a notepad for free if you spend more than €15 on Clairefontaine. So you can go a pack of 5 1951 clothbound with 1 free notepad each time.

I found them at PenChalet.com for $4.50 each . I got Four with $5.99 shipping on all. But I do like MassDrop! They show me things I didn't know about and WANT give them to me now.

stinkyinkyThe ones sold by Pen Chalet are staple bound, not glued into a cloth spine as these are. Neither is ideal, but these will lie a little more flatly and allow you to neatly tear out pages, i.e., the paper is sturdy enough and the glue just submissive enough to release the sheet edge intact if you want to remove it.

This drop sounded like a good deal before I saw the shipping & handling cost. I really wouldn't end up saving much over choosing my own assortment of singles at a store like Goulet. How disappointing.

I just received my ordered pack of five, but only received one. I have sent an email to the support team. Perhaps the packer didn't realize that the quantity of 1 meant either one five-or one ten-set of books?? Any one else?
