Nozac in name only?
Certainly not a reproduction of the original Nozac design (Nozac, by the way, was a play on the term No Sac), and a pretty significant departure from the previous iteration of the Nozac that I own (purchased three-ish years back). That said, if this pen's design/shape appeals to you, my recommendation would be a BUY, and especially at this reasonable price.
I have several Conklins, most purchased in the $80-$120 range. They are all nice pens, and among my favorites overall. You can find more expensive pens (and maybe better looking pens), but not many that are as enjoyable to use and write with. The fact that they don't cost an arm and leg only adds to the pleasure.

Something like that. There are so many variations it’s bewildering. Pricing is all over the place too. And of course I can’t make up my mind in the color.

MrSharkbaitCollecting them could become a full-time job. There's no particular shortage of them on the secondary market, but they come in a zillion colors and sizes--and then there's always the "condition" chase after that.

I have one of these and my recommendation would be AGAINST buying, even at this price.
first of all, it’s not a piston filler. It’s a captive converter, and the filling knob is so small and slippery that it’s very difficult to turn. There’s no ink window. And the configuration makes it VERY difficult to clean.
second, the build quality is terrible. The magnetic cap is barely magnetic. Gives new meaning to the term “weak force.” The only reason I bought one is that Goulet had them on close out with a bock nib. Conklin nibs are hit or miss at best.

writerstephenAbout the nibs, I think one reason they seem to be hit or miss is because of that half moon hole. When I wrote with it at the store, it was fine. After I brought it home and disassembled it for cleaning, the pen was misbehaving badly. There was starvation, but where the stroke ends I get pooling. When held up to the light, the gap wasn’t a line but a triangle. I read somewhere that flattening the nib near the breather hole may help, and indeed that solved the problem.
With a breather hole that is almost twice the area of typical holes, I think the tines can go out of plane easily as you are not careful in handling the nib during cleaning. I do believe though, that it is this lack of rigidity that gives these nibs their remarkable writing characteristics.

MrSharkbaitFor myself, I have found Conklin medium and broad nibs to be scratchy, and their stubs to be smooth. After I tune them, they write well enough, but anyone who isn’t comfortable smoothing nibs I would warn to beware.

I would recommend that anyone interested in the Conklin brand check out the Duragraph. Same nib, great looks, much lower price. I tried it out at the store and was really impressed by the way they write. The fine is springy and has a bit of line variation. The stub is wonderfully smooth. The pen is most likely made in China, but it is not the lack of quality that gave it away but the price. Online you can find it for less than the $54 for this drop.

Funny you mentioned the Avatar, because I was trying to decide between that and the Duragraph at the Yafa table. The Avatar had more flex, but that resin doesn’t look good to me up close, and the trim ring looks over-chromed, the details lack definition for the kind of money they want.
