It uses a high-end professional Sommer cable from Germany, made of tightly braided oxygen-free copper that’s covered in fabric below the Y split Read More
These dudes managing Massdrop, what's this manic obsession with XLR & 1/4"? We don't use that stuff. Many people out here using very expensive DAPs!
I'm tired of those who think the world revolves around their desktop components.
Now get us some balanced cables with a 2.5mm TRRS for our DAPs and 1.5m length.
OstewartThanks. I've seen survival wire but I didn't know there were so many different sizes of Paracord. I never actually needed it for it's intended purpose. This also reminds me of many custom cables that looked much bulkier than they needed to be.
What we fucking need is... a 1.5m cable with a 2.5mm plug! And with it a 4.4mm adapter.
We use high-end DAPs - anybody at Massdrop fucking listening?😩
Our DAPs have powerful amps and balanced outputs with a 2.5mm/4.4mm plug, do you fucking capiche?
I don't need a high-end desktop system, my DAP blows them all away soundwise & specwise! I can move about in the house with my DAP, or I can walk outside (yes I'm more than happy to walk down the street with an openback Sennheiser headphone).
And while I'm here, silver-lined copper cables sound better than copper-only cables☔
Actually, you can buy an official sennheiser cable which fits the 58x, 6xx etc. for $20. It's 3m long and has a 6.35mm (1/4") plug.
I got mine from amazon and is great.
It is not a balanced cable like this drop, but my DAC isn't balanced so no need for me to upgrade cables or DAC's yet.
Well, I'm new to the audiophile world, but I'm an Electrical engineer. A cable resistance of 1.2 or 0.2 ohm won't change anything. It will only change the sound level, by 0.3% which is basically nothing. However, a difference of capacitance could change the sound as it will change the frequency response of the headset and will act as a a low pass filter, making the high frequencies lower and the headset could feel mushier. But this is all theorical, I highly doubt there is a huge difference of capacitance between cables.
Anyone who wants a 2.5mm balanced I have already confirmed with Periapt Interconnects that they will make a 2.5mm balanced cable upon special request if you order a pro XLR cable from them, just put in the comments of the order you want 2.5mm balanced, and you can order a custom length as long as it’s shorter than the one you paid for.

Hope you didn’t get the Fiio Q1 MK2. I saw Z review it and he was using the HD 660’s with the Q1 MK2 and loved The combo. I didn’t know the 660’s had a lower impedance than the 600’s and 6XX/650’s. So im trying to sell my FiiO Q1 MK2 because I picked up the FiiO Q5. $200 more but it’s blue tooth and can drive the 6XX’s.
I recently received these cables and wanted to type up a review.
Build:
- The cable's build quality is "good" enough. From the Neutrik adapter up to the Y splitter is a black twisted nylon that first impressed me. After using it for about a day I found myself having to untangle the cable more often than I could care for. My recently purchased balanced M1060 cable from ImpactAudio never run across this problem. You can avoid this problem by wrapping up the cable using the included velcro ties. +From the Y splitter to the headphones the cable is wrapped in black heatshrink plastic to the headphone L/R connectors.
- Speaking of the headphone connectors; i'm not terribly impressed by them. The connectors don't easily snap in like the OEM connectors and feel like I'm having to push them into a tight space.
Sound:
- Going from my Jot's SE to balanced plug I noticed the lower end (bass) tightens up and that there's more separation on the HD650's. Sub bass isn't as bloomy as it was before and it sounds like the mid hump recessed slightly.
Personally, I think it's a great improvement to my HD650's sound but iffy on the purchase. For the previous price of $35 I would of said these are great. For the price of $70 it's really a stretch. In the end they do what they're supposed to do. Provide more power to each channel and in turn improve some aspects of the HD650s.
Does it not bug anyone that nowhere does it mention that the XLR connector is balanced. Like on the entire page it doesn't say anything about balanced. I feel like its still possible to make an unbalanced cable using a balanced connector. Massdrop it would be much appreciated for further details on this product.
No cable above decent consumer level will ever improve the sound of a pair of headphones, if music studios don't care that much, why should consumers spend crazy money on this. I think it's hilarious...
StorebraekThere was an infamous cable shoot out at an AES* convention years ago. They used several esoteric speaker cables, traditional plain lamp wire and a few straightened out coat hangers (which are not made of copper btw).
After blind testing with industry bigshots and golden ears, the coathangers were the clear winners!
So keep on blowing money on teflon coated oxygen free copper.

Instead of using 65 dollers on a worse looking cable than the original which also doesn't change the sound, donate those money to doctors without borders
sergeyu@Cokeman I think the final determination comes down to this: we know what we like when we hear it, regardless of how we hear it. If we like it better after throwing a few more dollars at it, so be it.
No need to convince anyone how much we like what we like, the way we like it ;- )
