Punish isn't what I'm going for. It would be an incentive for going for a drop right away rather than waiting for a cheaper one. Regardless, there is always room for improvement, even for massdrops delightful system.

fgoncalves97This reminds me of those peice matching from where im working at right now. Its so annoying. For example, i took the chance to build a computer two months ago. And the graphics card was a bit expensive. I wouldnt ask for the differences after a few weeks when i saw it was cheaper. Buying things is also a kind of risk. I actually skipped on the first drop of e10k and finally decided to get it this time, didnt even notice its cheaper on this drop.

I've been tempted to pick up the AKG x Massdrop K7XX Headphones and realise that ideally you should be picking up an amplifier as well to get the most out of the hp's. Would this device suffice for those particular headphones or am I better off looking at a different amp?
This isn't something I'm particularly knowledgeable over, so any advise is appreciated!
The computer should be able to be configured to allow sleep or screensaver while the E10k is plugged in. Probably in Device Manager or Power settings or something.

Valensilius_ZephyrusYep as others have said the problem doesn't pertain to the E10K, its just a K1 issue.

Remember guys, impedance is NOT everything. This little guy is great, but will not be able to drive low impedance but power hungry cans like planar magnetics well (like the Hifiman HE-400i for example).
This is because these cans usually require a lot of current power at their impedances, and the Fiio E10k with a max output of 200 mW @ 32 Ω just doesn't have enough output power to drive these types of cans well. Even the Objective2 amp does not drive the Audeze LCD-2 (70 ohm impedance) well because the LCD-2 is very power hungry.
With that being said, this little guy works well enough with most dynamic headphones (<200-250 ohm impedance) since dynamics are usually not very power hungry.
Just a tidbit to those new to the audiophile world, and a reminder to those who forgot. This is a great budget DAC/Amp to begin with, but know it has limitations.

lvince95Indeed. My Audio-Technica R70x (470 ohm) are easier to drive than my AKG K240 Studios (55 ohm).

Apparently Massdrop is reselling these FiiO products without authorisation from the manufacturer. Here's what a FiiO distributor wrote to resellers; posted by @InnerSanctumNYC on the X5 drop:
"It has come to our attention that Massdrop.com is again advertising for sale FiiO products at below MAP prices. Massdrop is not an authorized reseller and their advertised discounts are not approved by FiiO. In the past when this occurred, FiiO has investigated and found the inventory source, and promptly eliminated the inventory leakage. This email is a courtesy reminder to all FiiO's authorized resellers to not sell FiiO products in bulk to unauthorized resellers like Massdrop. Doing so will result in immediate loss of authorized status. FiiO makes every effort to build a healthy marketplace for the benefit for their authorized resellers like you. Your efforts and cooperation in adhering to FiiO's reseller policies will contribute to our mutual success."

ProgressiveIceThis statement give me an even greater desire to purchase this item from Massdrop rather than "authorized" channels.

If true, I agree with you that FiiO's overcontrolling price policy on "authorized resellers" is somewhat anti-competitive. Unfortunately they're not the only company that does this; not that that makes it right.
In this case with MassDrop, you'd actually want to buy if the E10K seems right for your needs (and you're patient and find the discount worthwhile), since MD is repping a free, competitive market more acceptably. Outside of this case, the FiiO policy bothers me as well.

I recently purchased the O2+ODAC for $199.99. and I found this deal. should I sell the O2+ODAC and buy this one? I have low impedance headphones like hd 25-ll, hd 598, akg k7xx

yellowavatar91Don't sell the O2+ODAC for the E10k. I used to have both and the ODAC/O2 combo is a significant upgrade, it's not even close imho. I found the E10k quite sterile and narrow sounding, it sapped away all the life out of my music, the ODAC/O2 is astounding, extremely clean sounding and transparent and it measures extremely well, honestly it's all you will ever need from a dac/amp. Do check "Z Review's" review of the E10k on youtube, his views reflect my own. Although we all hear differently so ymmv. Cheers

yellowavatar91I'll buy the O2+ODAC off of you for $199.99 if you do decide to sell :)
No but seriously, keep the O2+ODAC, it's definitely a better combo, and as others have said you will likely not need another source/amp unit again.

I had a Fiio E10K a few weeks back and I returned it as I was quite unhappy with its sound, it was very sterile and the sound-stage was extremely narrow sounding with my Q701's and my ath-m40x. I couldn't enjoy my music with it. I got a SMSL SD793-II instead and I'm MUCH happier, light years better than the E10k. The SMSL is extremely competent for the price but needs optical or coaxial input. The SMSL doesn't perform as well as a modi/magni or odac/o2 combo but for its price its quite good.

jchandyYou can get caught up in the smallest of details but I'm really happy with my E10K. I use nvx xpt100 and everything sounds bettere than before. Louder, clearer, bassier, its great for what I want.

FreddyEULouder and clearer than what exactly? On-board audio? I'm comparing the E10k with another external dac/amp in the same price range(the SMSL is cheaper) and the difference isn't minor by any means. Nonetheless if you are happy with it then that's all that matters, I wasn't as I've compared them both. I've had a lot of Fiio's (Fiio e10, Fiio e10k, Fiio e7, Fiio e7k, Fiio e17, Fiio E6, Fiio E11, Fiio E12, Fiio e09k, Fiio X3, Fiio X5), they make great value for money products for sure although it's hard to recommend the E10K when you can get better for less, although the Fiio has the usb dac option whereas the smsl doesn't.

Can someone explain how a DAC/headphone amp enhances music and gaming? I dont know much about audio equipment so im curious to know how much of a difference this device makes. I like how small it is and im definitely okay with spending $60 but is it worth it for my setup? Im currently using a pair of Kanto Yumi speakers and HiFiMan HE-350 headphones for my PC.

JuntaoIn all likelihood you won't hear any difference with your speakers and Headphones. Unless your motherboard's onboard sound is noticeably distorted (hissing, high noise floor, etc) then don't bother. IF there is an audible difference between DACs then you need much more expensive equipment to resolve that kind of detail. A DAC just changes a digital signal into an analog one. We've gotten very good at doing this. I don't know what kind of magic everyone thinks DACs do to their audio.

BeardedAlbatrossYou have some valid points. A properly functioning DAC won't magically transform/color or distort the audio in any way. The main reason I first decided to try out external DAC/amps (more specifically the Schiit Fulla 2) was because my sound card picked up interference from my video card and I knew this would be an easy solution. An added benefit was also being able to use higher impedance headphones such as the Sennheiser HD650s. I have since then traded up my Fulla 2 towards a Modi Multibit & Vali 2 stack and have no desire to go back to onboard audio or a sound card for my desktop computer.

What a shitty drop. I bought mine for $60 new on Amazon by waiting for a sale, or you could get it for $75 right now. So for less than $10 more than the cheapest here, you could have it in 2 days instead of months of waiting for massdrop... Not worth it at all.
