Product Description
Perhaps best known for its 24-hour Airman tool watch, Glycine has been producing quality timepieces since 1914. This one, powered by the company’s own GL293 21-jewel automatic movement, wouldn't look out of place on a pilot’s wrist Read More
Hopefully Invicta, who bought Glycine, is temporarily building brand awareness, but you might see this watch at Sam's club if they stay on this path--and devalue the Glycine brand completely. Hopefully someone who recognizes the cachet that Glycine carries is running the brand towards the future and not into the ground. This years version uses a lesser eta movement than years past...looks like it is going downhill in quality.
AleskbVitriol is not a component of psychoanalysis. Honesty, however indelicate, is. We often forget how we obviate ourselves within these sheltered internet personas. I wish you the best, sir, and hope you find fulfillment where you seek it.
Somehow I have the feeling that the collaboration between Massdrop and Glycine is initiated by the Invicta marketing team, probably to touch base before further expanding their market. If that's the case 600 might be a bottom line for brand new DC-4, and with that price Glycine is going to be much more competitive.
xiaoqizI think you are right. The high MSRPs of Glycine are a thing of the past, and the Massdrop price is a ball park number of what to expect in the future.
WatchThisNot sure, selling it for 500 Euros + shipping. But you’re better off buying from the grey US Market if you can get it for 650 USD. My price is ok for EU buyers where there is no grey market and buying from the US costs 20% import.
Is it a 12 hour or a 24 hour? I dunno...I'd never be caught dead with one of these. I own a real DC-4 with 24 hour purist movement. This one can't have a purist movement because it is a freaking 12-hour watch with 24 hour outer bezel. Makes no sense and makes a bit of a mockery of the Glycine brand.
You're clearly missing the point...it's not a lack of comprehension, it's a design objection. The purity of the 24-hour watch is part of what attracts people to the Airman line of watches. I've always felt the GMT watches were a bit of a sell-out, frankly. This watch goes a step further away from the design principles of the early Airman, that's all. For the same reason you wouldn't want complications on Braun watch, I don't like 12-hour elements on a 24-hour watch. You're free to disagree if you don't share my essentialist aesthetic.
jamesdmeacham3The arguments for and against the Purist and GMT versions will be different according to whether the focus is on design, including historical aspects, or functionality. The original Purist design can track two-time zones whereas the GMT versions can track three so the choice here depends on on the weight given to original design v funcionality
To understand the unique position of the DC4, one facet of the mechanics of the Purist and the GMT models is important. The Purist obtains its 24-hour rotation of the hour hand by attaching it to the GMT stem of the GMT movement and simply disabling to the conventhand part of the GMT movement. However, this ability to track three time zones created an interesting situation when reading the time at the first (local or home) time zone, since the hour hand now rotates twice every 24 hours but the dial remains the original 24-hour version. This means that it is necessary to tell the time at the first time zone by remembering what the positon of the hour and minute hands on the Airman would represent on a non-Glycine watch.
From the point of view of conserving the original appearance of the dial this is not a negative factor but it does make it more difficult to tell the time depending on ability to adapt or readapt if more than one watch is owned.
This leads to the final point that there is some support for the point of view that the DC4 might be the best of the many Airman options since it is easy to tell the first zone time and it retains the ability to track a third zone.
To those wondering about the Glycine brand being devalued with such price reductions, the market for Swiss watches overall is in decline. Swiss watches exported were down last year and are below last year's pace thus far this year. It appears that Swiss brands are competing for a smaller slice of a shrinking pie as exports to Asia, Europe, Australia and even the U.S. are in steady decline. Top tier brands like Rolex and Omega are not feeling the pinch yet, but I suspect they will begin offering modest discounts shortly. There are websites where you can purchase both brands at anywhere from 25% to 48% off retail. Which leaves the smaller brands with no option but to offer significant discounts.
I have both models (Purist and GMT). Both keep great time and look great! No problems with hand alignment. See included Pics. Both on black BluShark NATO's.
Tarzan say: Jane, why man buy same both watch?
Jane say: Well Tarzan, one watch has an extra little hand.
Tarzan say: What extra little hand do?
Jane say: Same as the others Tarzan, just someplace else.
Tarzan say: Jane, tell Tarzan truthfully--does anybody really know what time it is? Does anyone really care--about time?
I had to return 44 mm Airman wit GMT due to GMT hand slipping and mal-aligning. I am scare to repeat same. Is Purist version without GMT is better than GMT version ? I am new to Glycine. TIA!
