Assembled by hand in Minneapolis by Guarded Goods, this keyring features a shell cordovan lanyard with all-brass hardware. Available in 19 different colors, the shell cordovan leather hails from one of five tanneries around the world: Conceria Cloe or Rocado SRL, both in Italy; Clayton, in England; Shinki Hikaku, in Japan; or Horween, in the United States. The edges of the leather are sanded and beveled, then burnished with beeswax. All of the hardware, from the rivet and snap to the ring and trigger clip, is made of solid brass, which comes with your choice of brass or nickel plating.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of shell cordovan leather color and hardware color.
Pioneered in the Middle Ages by the Moors, shell cordovan has roots in Spain, with the city of Cordoba lending its name to this rare leather. Today, it’s most commonly associated with Chicago’s Horween tannery—the country’s oldest tannery still producing shell cordovan. It comes from the fibrous flat muscle, or shell, taken from a specific part of a horse’s hide. Over the course of 6 months, it undergoes an extensive process that includes tanning, stuffing, shaving, and polishing. Regarded as one of the most durable forms of leather, shell cordovan is also sought after for its unique hand-finished color treatment.
