A follow-up to the highly regarded DarkVoice 337, the La Figaro 339 tube headphone amp has a dual-mono, output-transformerless (or OTL) design that allows the vacuum tubes to drive the headphone directly. The result is a clear, accurate, distortion-free sound and the ability to drive low- and higher-impedance headphones alike Read More
Back on massdrop I see. It's a little bit confusing for me to determine which model this is. I'm new to tube amps. Is this the same "upgraded" version that Shenzhen sells?
Did you make any mods on your Darkvoice 336?
I say that, because I eliminated the preamp output and made the led mod. These changes made Darkvoice more detailed and holographic and with a significant increase in the sound stage and separation of instruments. I'm using it now with a Mullard 6080 and a sylvania 6sn7gt vt231 and the sound has really improved significantly.
I'm sorry but this La Figaro 339 Tube Headphone Amplifier does not appear to be OTL(Output Transformerless) as those three black cases mounted on the chassis are clearly what I would identify as housings for "transformers." I believe further explanation is due to explain the presence of those cases and what they house?
AudioproThe two housings on either side house left and right power transformers. The one in the middle houses 4 large capacitors. There are several photos on the internet showing this amp with the center housing removed and revealing the 4 big caps. This amp is truly dual mono, with a separate power supply, transformer and power cord for each channel.
I have the Zana Deux S on my radar. Is it worth picking this up in the meantime? How different are they sonically? Is the Zana Deux S worth the extra $ over this?
I think what he was getting at was that since it is dual mono, the negatives/grounds in this amp are shared unless you have a 4-pole TRRS plug. This would mean that it isn't actually dual mono if you only have a 3-pole TRS.
Anyone who immediately dismisses a headphone amplifier because it is not balanced should read this monograph: https://benchmarkmedia.com/blogs/application_notes/audio-myth-balanced-headphone-outputs-are-better The argument made by the author is that, far from improving performance, balanced headphone amplifiers actually degrade it. This amp is true dual mono, single ended and definitely tube without being "tubey", and it's only $630.00 including shipping from China. If you buy one from Yuking Audio-Video Lab (the manufacturer), it will cost you $730-750 plus $120 shipping. As a bonus, because it's an OTL, it works best with high impedance phones that don't work well with most solid state headphone amps.
OTL amps don't develop their highest output at low impedences, but at high impedences. So, the LaFigaro is perfectly happy driving 600 ohm loads. As an example, the Schiit Valhalla 2, also an OTL amp, delivers 800mw into a 300 ohm load and 450 mw into 600 ohms, but only 180mw into 50 ohms. Schiit doesn't even rate it at 32 ohms, but I suspect its output is "schiit".
If you have 32 ohm cans, look elsewhere; this amp isn't for you. If you have 250-600 ohm headphones, you may be in the right place. If you want objective measurements, why not Google this amp and read one or two. This amplifier has been around since 2012; by now, there are probably a lot of them. Incidently, your comment "if it was rated at 32 ohms than (sic) the rating for 600 ohms would (be) much lower" is dead wrong. For OTL amps, exactly the opposite is true.
