What the hell guys!
Here's a photo comparing my original Manhattan Portage Clamshell Pen Case to the Massdrop exclusive Manhattan Portage Clamshell.
You replaced the beautiful Cordura 1000D nylon interior with some sort of cheap soft and awful generic cheap black Nylon. If I had known that "Massdrop exclusive" stood for cheap cost cutting and a decrease in quality I would have never joined the drop!
I have the earliest half zip version, where the fold down flap is shorter than the most recent updated version. I prefer the shorter flap and will be keeping mine. And i just noticed on your clam shell version, they don't sew the pockets to the bottom (ie: the blue shows below") like the half zip. I wonder why
Received mine today, much nicer in person than on screen. Good quality overall so I would highly recommend.
The five slots are not exactly equally sized. Starting left, first slot the smallest, second and fourth slot are the same, third slot is sized inbetween the first and second/fourth, the fifth slot is the largest slot.
If you have a naked needle tip mech pencil, I feel it is better protected in the middle (third slot) since the zip is reinforced there for a little more rigid feel so it doesn't bends there.
It's a Hemingway mechanical pencil. Its a very nice clean mech pencil! There's three material options, steel, titanium, aluminium; mines alu, fast to fly across the page.

So, I've had this case since the last drop, so I figured it was time for a review.

You'll note the top of the "fold-over" bit doesn't always sit flush with the zipper. This seems to happen more when larger pens are in the case.

For a size/fit comparison, the following pens are in the case in the photo above, from left to right:
Parker 51, Italix Churchman's Prescriptor, Parker ballpoint, Montblanc 149, Wahl Eversharp Decoband.
Reactions:
1. Material is Cordura, which is basically a heavy synthetic canvas. Exceptionally durable. Some have commented the quality is basic. I disagree. Craftsmanship and materials are very good, except fold over pattern should be modified slightly to accommodate closing it with large pens in it. You can easily do this modification yourself, as I intend to.
2. Each slot is a different size. Large pens will not fit properly in the middle (parker ballpoint) slot. The reason for this is when the case is closed it will crush the pen or it won't close all the way--don't do it. Small pens only in the middle. However, on either side there is ample space for even the largest of the large pens.
3. Amazing protection for your pens.
Bottom Line: Best 15 bucks you're gonna spend to protect your pens. Buy one.
Guys while I appreciate the update, ya'll should know by now that its pretty unacceptable to wait till the shipping date itself to inform us of a delay. The company's what, 5 years old now? And you've run many many drops by now. These are errors/mistakes/oversights i expect from a company that's just starting out and figuring out the kinks. Not one thats been around for a while now.
NeraloI cancelled my order. It is ridiculous that after a three month lead time, they still could not make the commitment. And then as mentioned above, wait until the expected delivery date to post an "update". There are plenty of good case alternatives from companies willing to deliver the their product.
This is one of the worst drops that I have participated in. The actual product took 3 months to be delivered and the quality is pretty basic. This is no good for expensive pens !
UppinderExactly. I am shocked now to read all the praises of high quality and good craftmanship... then I wonder what is considered bad quality if this is top for most... You just can't say good quality for a $15 product. A quality is either good or bad, no matter if it cost $1 or $100. Better put your pens in a plastic zipper bag, at least it will be waterproof...
I see that nothing has been done to fully protect the pens from rubbing against each other. This real should be called a pencil case since I can't understand how anyone would put $50-and-up pens into these.
FearlessleaderGood point. The clamshell in only good for pencils and the one with the flap..well just look at the reviews, the flap is too stiff to work. I think I'm gonna put my micro-screwdrivers in it.. although it will be my most expensive screwdriver case...
THIS THING ROCKS.
I got mine on the last drop and am buying another right now. It will take two oversize pens and then 3 more normal ones.
if you're having them with the clips outside the pouch, for fountain pens, make sure the pens are rotated to the side to make sure the clips don't rub against each other. But it has no problem holding a visconti homo sapiens, a TWSBI vac700r, platinum 3776, full size bexley, and a lamy 2000.
Build quality is great. 5 pens is kind of my perfect setup for a week at school.
