Update Oct 23: Hi All, we just got off the phone with Carmina and wanted to provide an update on the sizing problem. As mentioned in the previous email, the shoes were mislabeled in UK sizes instead of the specified US sizes. All drop participants are able to receive either a full refund or can wait to receive a replacement pair of shoes from Carmina. You will not need to return the shoes you have already received. The replacements will be prioritized by Carmina, but given they are handmade will still take some time. We will follow-up as soon as we have confirmation on a timeframe from Carmina.
To request either a full refund or request receiving a new pair of shoes, please go to the transactions page and reach out to support with what you would like. (If you have already submitted a request, you don’t need to do send a new one)
https://www.massdrop.com/transactions In either case, you can keep the shoes that have been sent to you. Some users have written in asking to swap shoes with someone else in the drop, and we’ve created a post where you can connect with others in the drop here:
https://www.massdrop.com/talk/2551/massdrop-x-carmina-semi-brogue-oxford-size-swap-thread Again, we want to apologize for the issue with sizing on this drop and for the huge letdown it represents. It is clearly not the situation anyone wanted to be in, and we’ll be doing what we can to make it right. Carmina's being a great partner helping work through this process with us, and we'll provide an update for timing for the option to get a new pair of shoes as soon as we can.
----- Hi Everyone, thanks for reporting these sizing issues. We've reached out to Carmina, but they’re a day ahead and generally unresponsive over the weekend. We're trying to schedule a call late Sunday night our time, their Monday morning to discuss this situation ASAP.
As many of you have suggested, it appears these shoes were labeled in UK sizes instead of US sizes as we specified. This means pending our discussion with Carmina, the solution will likely be that we'll provide prepaid return labels and redistribute the sizes. Due to the combination of widths and lengths, there will likely be a number of orders that can't be fulfilled with the units in this shipment. Because of that, a key part of our discussion with Carmina will be around them producing additional units to fulfill those orders on a condensed production schedule.
We will be monitoring this discussion, but if you have an issue, please write into our support team by clicking “contact support” via the Carmina transaction on your My Transactions page. The more of you that do that, the more we have to show Carmina when we talk with them. Overall, Carmina has been great to work with (especially related to sizing as a topic) and I’m sure we can work together to find the fastest and most complete solution possible.
This experience is not representative of what you should expect from a Massdrop collaboration and we’ll be working with Carmina to make it right for everyone in this drop.
We’ll be sending this as an email to everyone in the drop, but thanks again for your quick reporting in this discussion and please write in to support (via your transactions page) so we can verify the extent of the issue in time for our discussion with Carmina.

WillI didn't participate in this drop but have been following it all these months and am glad Massdrop is addressing the problem, but between this drop and the Puro sneaker drop, which I did participate in, I'm starting to not entirely believe "This experience is not representative of what you should expect from a Massdrop collaboration," when it comes to shoe collaborations.

WillHi Will, Has there been any further communications about potentially doing another run with Carmina? a Jodhpur would be excellent!
Hello Everyone, Thanks for coming to our launch of the Massdrop x Carmina Semi-Brogue Oxford! This collaboration has been nearly nine months in the making, but Massdrop community members have been singing the praises of Carmina since folks started posting about them in 2014. As with all of our collaborations, this shoe was inspired by the Massdrop community's behavior. The comparison posts, review posts, the debate that happens around every brand on Massdrop, all of that comes to our team and is considered in the development of our collaborations. The discussions about Carmina (on Massdrop) generally agreed the Rain last was easier to fit than the Simpson without sacrificing the smooth profile you expect from a european crafted shoe. Massdrop discussions focused around Carmina’s semi brogue pattern and always stressed the impressive price to performance ratio Carmina represents in the ~$500 price bracket. By combining Massdrop’s community feedback with Carmina’s incredible materials and existing styles, we’ve created a shoe we hope many of you will enjoy for years to come. I’ll be here throughout the drop answering questions along with my colleagues. Thanks again for your interest and we’re looking forward to this exciting launch of our first Oxford collaboration! The Massdrop x Carmina Semi-Brogue Oxford will be available for $349.99 with free US shipping starting May 15th at 6 a.m. PT. This drop will also be available to International members (shipping details to be released). All participants will receive a pair of sized beechwood shoe trees. This drop will be initially limited to 750 pairs.
Sizing Information
Length: the sizing options are US standard lengths. The Rain last (and thus this shoe) fits true to size. See the detailed information on the sizing chart in the drop description.

Updated 10/11 Hi Everyone - The shoes have made it through quality control and we are now preparing the Carminas for shipment! We are on track to ship by 10/20. Thanks again for patience with this drop - we’re looking forward to you all receiving your shoes and seeing your pics of them.

UPDATE 10/6: Hi All -
We have a quick update for everyone. The shoes have arrived at our warehouse and we are beginning the quality control check process. There was a slight delay in customs, as well as a delay during the receiving process due to ambiguous size labeling. As of now we are on track to start shipping out on 10/20.
The team is doing everything they can to get the shoes shipped out by 10/20, and we’ll provide an update once quality control check is complete.
In the meantime, there are some pics from the warehouse:

Next update on or by: 10/13

UPDATE 9/26:
Hey all -
The shoes are on track to hit our warehouse this week from Spain, and thus we are still expecting to fall into the 2-4 week delay period for them to get shipped out (10/6-10/20) with the team expecting for things to start shipping around the middle of that period.
The main next steps are going to be getting through customs and to our warehouse and then receiving (quality control check). As long as no issues come up in those two steps we'll land in the above range.
There have also been a couple requests for pictures. We unfortunately haven't gotten any from Carmina to share yet, but I'll follow-up if we do get them - and if not, we'll aim to get some from the warehouse later this week or early next.
Next update on or by: 10/6
------ Hey all - I wanted to provide an (overdue) update. There was a delay in shipment to our warehouse, and currently the shoes are being ferried from the island where they were made to mainland Spain for air shipment to Massdrop. This is resulting in an estimated delay of 2-4 weeks - unfortunately, we won’t have a better grasp for a few days on how long the delay will be until the shipment actually gets off the boat. We’ll let you know once we have more concrete information. I’m sorry for the delay in shipping time, but even more sorry for the lack of communication leading up to this delay. Delays happen (sometimes from things outside of our control, sometimes due to processes we can improve), but it’s up to us to be communicative, transparent, and consistent in providing you with updates - and we failed on all 3 fronts here. We should have gotten you this update earlier. I’m personally working on updating our communications process, and will be working with our logistics team to make sure we give consistent updates on this drop and future drops. Thanks for the patience. Next update on or by: 9/26

So you held a pair of 8EE shoes in your hand and didn't realize they were UK size? Or just didn't think to check them? I would bet that particular shoe's paperwork says 8D.

A follow-up to my review / thoughts on SF: https://www.styleforum.net/threads/massdrop-x-carmina-semi-brogue-oxford.543322/page-2#post-8857068
So I did a bit of an experiment with the samples I got. I wanted to see how much of a difference I could create with creams and waxes, so I did an applied patina / fake distressing with what I had. I can definitely say that the shoe looks and feels very different now. So if you're not a fan of a plain brown shoe, this can definitely be made to look more "interesting" if that's your thing. The effects can be more or less subtle than what I'm showing in these photos, just work more or less with darker colored creams depending on your preference. I did not go for a mirror shine, instead opting for a medium-high shine overall with slightly higher shine on the toe box.
Photos follow, taken in different lights--direct sunlight as well as ambient natural light. Straight from phone camera, no filters / post processing.
I would repeat that I feel that not only are these a great value for money, but they are also offered in multiple widths including the narrower width (which I haven't seen in the wild honestly), and that I personally see these as being very versatile. :)

Wow, thank you so much for the time you took writing that up. I just took a screen-shot of it lol. I've mostly just been using venetian cream and kiwi waxes, which do allow me to get a mirror polish; but I've never tried antiquing a finish before, and I'd like to. I'll purchase those Saphir products on their next drop, and pretty much try to replicate exactly what you've described. Thanks again! Just out of curiosity, do you know your brannock size?

KTO1No worries, I love showing off haha
My Brannock size is US 10.5B. I have weird feet (ie way off the "standard") so I'd advise you to not base your sizing decisions on my experiences.
About the shoe care products, I haven't used anything other than Saphir from the get go but honestly I don't think you need to buy more creams or waxes for this. I feel that Renovateur is a good investment (that's leather conditioner and cleaner) but I think you can keep using your Kiwi / other company creams and polishes.
Above all, don't be afraid to experiment and HAVE FUN. I just made up my mind as I was going through the process. Great thing about creams and waxes is that you can always reverse it. Do get a leather cleaner like the Saphir Renomat though it'll make it easier to experiment cause you can undo your mistakes.

Okay, I have to ask as I had such an appalling failed drop with a J. Fitzpatrick drop a few months ago. Shipping date suggests these are already made and in MD’s warehouse. My question is... are these shoes returned stock from the previous drop a year ago (look down the comment section, massive sizing errors) where they’ve been sitting in the warehouse all this time and are simply being re-distributed to new customers? In which case the shoes would not be in new condition due to their original owners handling and trying them on. Clarification would be great as I have had big issues with MD’s inconsistent trade practises. I am indeed interested in this drop but will not commit till I know these aren’t recycled stock. Thanks in advance. K.

bryanljsYes! I’ve gotten my pair and apart from the box being a little torn, everything was packaged nicely and shoes appeared to be unworn and crease free. Nothing to complain about! In fact they came in JUST in time for a big event the following night. Very happy with them. 👍👍

Beautiful shoe! Having a few Carmina shoes in my rotation I can confirm that the quality is superb and that $350 is a great price.
Massdrop, your nomeclature is wrong. What is pictured is neither a semi-brogue or an Adelaide. It is rather a quarter-brogue balmoral or oxford. A semi brogue has a medallion punched on the captoe, and an Adelaide has an extended vamp which encloses the laces. This shoe has neither.

I don't know that just sounds like a cop out for Americans that don't know how to use the right terminology just like how we bastardized oxfords and use it to refer to any lace up leather shoe.

I'd probably call it a blind (referring to medallion) semi-brogue, a quarter brogue is really just a perforated cap toe with/without medallion

I received the shoes. The shoes are too LARGE. I have own 4 pair of carmina before. So i understand the sizing. I order 7.5US which should be 6.5Uk. But it definatly is oversized.

I just received a response from customer service. They have sent me a pre paid shipping label to return the product for a full refund. They don’t have any inventory to do an exchange. It’s too bad, I was really looking forward to trying these on. Hopefully this mix up doesn’t happen with the j.fitz order I just put in.

XJC_SZSame issue here. This is absurd.
Hello Everyone,
Our apologies for the delay in this update. I'm happy to report that production is going according to plan, with all units on track to be finished and shipped in the first week of September. With Carmina shipping to us in the first week of September, we should be shipping these out within days of the estimated ship date of September 22.
At this point, risks include damages in the shipment (highly unlikely, these are shipping via air and Carmina takes great care in their packaging), and delays at the port (again unlikely, port scheduling is generally predictable at this time of the year).
Thanks for your patience and again, we apologize for the radio silence. This update experience is not representative of the experience we strive to provide.
Stay tuned for more updates as we enter the final weeks of this fulfillment.

I can give everyone the benefit of the doubt, like producing such a mass quantity of shoes takes time, etc. Or maybe Carmina just had a team dedicated to producing the shoes from this drop while others worked on MTOs etc. Lots of internal reasons we might not know about.
I'm not usually one to complain, but I am concerned about the lack of updates here. Carmina was supposed to ship this to Massdrop the first week of September, which would have been last week. By now, Massdrop should know if Carmina has shipped the shoes. Yet we haven't gotten any update.
I mean, if there's a delay in production and shipping, that's alright. Other drops have such delays. People generally understand these things just happen sometimes, even though it's not optimal. But if that's the case, shouldn't we know about it?
And even if everything is on track, well, we should know that too. This is scheduled to be shipped to us from Massdrop by next Friday, after all.

These are beautiful, but for black oxfords I really prefer the no-brogueing style (just a simple captoe). The brogueing brings the formality down a little, and makes the shoes not quite suitable for certain formal events (black tie, funeral, etc). I'll definitely buy them if Massdrop can come up with a no-brogueing version.

Can anyone (maybe payodpanda) provide more perspective on the shade of brown of these shoes, especially under sunlight and different lighting conditions? At first glance, I thought the Carmina looked like a darker brown with a hint of redness. But, looking at it again today, it sort of looks like a shade of tan.
For someone who's seen the shoes firsthand, does the Carmina share the burnished tan look akin to an Allen Edmonds Strand in Walnut?
search

search
Or does it seem closer to a chocolate-like shade of a darker brown color, such as the AE Clifton in brown shown below?

Many thanks to anyone who can provide input. I'd hate to reinvent the wheel by duplicating a color that I already have. I'd love it if we can do this drop again with a wider variety of colors in the future!

@payodpanda thanks for the advice. My Carmina came in and I also ordered the Saphir Renovateur. It's going to be a little challenge getting them to look like your worked-on ones but I will try. Any advice as well would be welcomed. Thank you!!!
