It’s a matter of taste.. I reserve the higher precision resistors in more critical areas like Phono Equalization, or I/V R’s for certain DACS. I like the Vishay RN 60 series (metal film) on the cathodes too in certain apps like driver stages for PP tube amps. In quality audio, it‘s usually the non-inductive and non-magnetic (leads and end caps) types that are preferred in the direct signal path.

Rick_THi, sorry to be so long getting back on this, I didn't forget. Prodded Vishay to see the view today from the inside, always an interesting vantage point, and got these comments, a lot was mfg. IP, so only pieces here:
"this subject is something I have had exposure too for many years, in my foil resistor days we sold many parts to a guy in UK called David Heaton, he ran/runs his own business and makes serious high end amplifiers, that cost 8-10K sterling back then, 15K USD. he would use foil resistors, ALPS potentiometers, gold plated wires, and his amps were like rolls Royce cars, decadent and well built... I went to his home one time and he sat me down in his ‘listening room’ and at a low level the sound was out of this world, so rich and hard to describe.... "
"So the best resistors are the foil ones they use the homogenous foil and are pure, there is even a school of thought that uncoated foil parts are better, they started calling them naked Vishay’s , there is lot of chat and argument on the forums, and Charcroft here in the UK sell the naked Vishay’s under their manufacturing licence agreement, www.charcroft .com in UK I’m not convinced that the removal of the coating makes a difference....the foil itself is the key part IMO."
"Based on what I have heard and experienced, the best upgrades come from the VPG product, if you can afford them... http://www.vishaypg.com/foil-resistors/ "
So then the naked's (foil) win for critical path usage at least, and the next in line are the CNS HVPS and RN60 which are thin film deposited films, for Vishay products.
Noise in resistors comes primarily from defects in structure, both intrinsic & surfaces, impurities plus interfaces- terminations/contact/phases. Here I find it interesting that the resistor foil still win in the noise bracket, but I think I can now compete here with new thin film tech we have now, some work ahead...
I see a lot of carbon about, but really don't see it as something to go for, in the direct signal path. Though the Dueland cast carbon/silver products look interesting for crossovers; http://duelundaudio.com/resistors/ But again here they talk about a "Cast Carbon Sound"... another imposing signature...

Parts links: http://www.partsconnexion.com/resistors_vishay_var.html http://www.texascomponents.com/store/VishayFoilResistors.asp http://www.vishaypg.com/docs/63140/var.pdf
Then it goes on to interesting things such as these Tantalum - Silver Audio Note resistors, first I have seen these, these they say are resistance - with no resistance to sound, no mention of noise level, pure silver is just always nice of course:)http://www.partsconnexion.com/resistors_tantalm_silver_two_watt.html
Very nice custom solid Ag connection construction, but again the Ta, which is actually TaN i'm quite sure, is still likely a bit noisy and could be improved upon: http://www.audionote.co.uk/comp/resistors.shtml

SiCr from my experience is the lowest TCR and a very quiet film, what the THAT thatcorp.com folks use also. I was introduced to it working with IBM Almaden Research, making their quietest, most stable devices, many years ago. I think this is a good candidate, but we can sputter almost anything, with almost perfect structure now. These new films can also have very low intrinsic stress, which also plays a factor in noise, often overlooked.

.
Will let you know if I get traction on this endeavor, wanted to respond regardless.
I'm demo'ing ZDT right now and I just wanted to chime in here as I've been listening to it on and off all day. Anyone who knows me knows I love tube amps and pairing them with the high impedance ZMF dynamic headphones. While I can't comment on how the amp works with planar's yet I can comment on how it works with headphones like the ZMF's, HD800 and the THxx. It really isn't just a good amp for $400, it's just a good amp. Nailing tonality and "weight" is something really hard to find in a tube amp of any price and the ZDT manages to do it. It is a slightly warm amp but not over the top, the upper mids/lower treble is very smooth and low end has lots of control. My favorite part of the amp is being able to go back and forth between the low/high Z out's to match each headphone. Having this really is necessary when going through a few different headphones on an amp like this, so I'm really happy it's included. I know it's a long wait for a lot of you guys but I just wanted to say i think it'll be worth it once you get it in hand.
Also - as an aside, I am not affiliated with MassDrop in any way aside from the fact I love the guys who run the show over there and we sell our pads through them sometimes! Nobody asked me to post a comment and I have no gain from talking here, I really just want to try to help as the hours count down on this guy.

At his heart, Craig Uthus is a music lover and an amplifier designer. The former before the latter. Craig Uthus is the owner and chief amplifier designer of the small boutique called Eddie Current. He also used to be a partner and the engineer of Moth Audio. He’s a favorite of the audiophile community. I was already an owner of Eddie Current and Moth Audio amps when I started at Massdrop. (I owned the Super 7 and Balancing Act. Still have a Zana Deux, Black Widow, and a Moth Audio 2a3). Craig tunes his amplifiers to be neutral (but never sterile) and slightly “lush” (but never muddy). Eddie Current amps also create a larger “headstage” or what some describe as a holographic presentation of the music. So naturally, we wanted to work with Craig on a project to offer his sound through Massdrop. When we approached Craig to work on an amp that could be made in higher volumes and at a lower pricepoint, Craig explained that he isn’t set up as that kind of operation but that he already had a manufacturing partner in place and a design in mind… Years ago, Craig found a partner in Russia to make a less expensive line of amps for Eddie Current to sell. For a while, Eddie Current offered a small amp called the Lunchbox. These were low cost and had a very warm sound, perfect for the headphones from a few years ago (many were bright to the point of shrill or had spikes in the upper frequency range). Some buyers tried putting incompatible or bad, untested tubes in the amps because they fit into the sockets, which burned out parts in some of the amps. When customers started returning the amps, it became difficult to continue selling them. Since then, Craig has experimented with producing some of his own designs in a smaller form factor made at Laconic Lab and Craig has also been interested in some of the amps designed by Laconic. One such amp that Craig liked and passed around in the community was the Night Blues Mini, which made a big splash three years ago but lots of details such as importing/exporting from Russia, product testing and certification, packaging, cosmetic changes, amp support, and the small size of Eddie Current has prohibited Craig from selling them in the United States. This project has been a labor of love from everyone involved. It’s taken a year and a half to get amp samples back and forth between Russia and the US, find the beefy power switch & just the right volume knob that Craig likes to improve the aesthetics, add a Staron faceplate, make changes to fitment of the panels and screws, develop the packaging, test the amp for certification, set up exporting/importing/shipping/finances with Russia, and change the artwork on the product. We’ve had some different prototypes of the amp floating around for a while in the background during development plus there were two original amps that Craig Uthus sold three years ago, so you can definitely see some impressions today with some new ones over the next couple of days. All of the responses to this amp have been incredibly positive and I have no doubt that this amp will have a very loyal following. That’s the backstory. :) What is this big deal and obsession with tube amps in the audiophile community??? The short answer is that some headphones have issues that tube amps uniquely remedy. At the same time, great tube amps can improve great headphones to reach an addictive and immersive listening experience. Even if your headphone has the right levels of bass/mids/treble, detail & resolution, there are still other aspects of musical presentation such as attack/decay, and headstage/imaging that can be improved by a great tube amp. Some headphones sound great but the presentation through an amplifier is too “fast” sounding, sometimes described as “sterile” or unnatural sounding. Some headphones sound great but the sound seems to come from the drivers on either side of the head with a “blob” in the middle of the head between the ears. Imaging of the instruments and singer does not place them with depth, a sense of space or “openness”. These can be subtle cues or pretty obvious, depending upon what you are used to listening to. While it is hard to make the jump to an amp that costs over $2,000 if you have not been able to hear one, with Craig’s help we have an amplifier that gives so much of what the top amplifiers can do in an affordable (by audiophile standards) package. The Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr. uses transformers from Germany, a circuit design that Craig describes as “clever” and “unique”, new old stock Russian tubes from the 1960’s, manufacturing by hand in Russia, and aesthetic touches approved by Craig. Getting this amp up and running took longer than expected. If you make it into this first run, you will probably have the only amps from us for a while. Producing the first batch (we really wanted to get things started) will take longer due to a Russian slowdown in December/January due to customs backlog that occurs, plus the Chinese New Year will slow production since some parts are manufactured there. We will set a shipping date that is safe and hope that we can produce them faster for you. Here’s to good listening!
EDIT (11/21/17): The faceplate is actually made out of Staron, a synthetic stone or marble.

Gain is pretty similar between the two outputs, so the low/high outputs don't serve the same purpose as a gain switch would.

My unit from the first shipment hums also -- changes in position relative to other electronics do not help, nor do cheater plugs and other fixes. Just about bearable on HD650s but painful and distracting on lower-impedance phones and absolutely unendurable on IEMs. Is a fix on the way? A replacement or refund program?

So after more usage, things did change... for the better at first and then not so much. - Initially, out of the box, it hummed more in the right channel and less in the left as I mentioned in my previous posts.
- After some usage I noticed the power switch was somewhat unreliable where the tubes and the orange LED would not always illuminate after flipping the switch on. The amp would power on if depressing the switch slightly from the on position or trying again more slowly. I can tell that there is a power transient occurring (Schiit Eitr glitches - bad USB on the un-isolated side I think - its LED flickers and sound stops with certain noisy mains power transients) when flipping the switch so I don't necessarily think it is a (or only) mechanical issue with the switch.
- Some days later I observed a higher frequency noise (I would need to measure to determine what frequency and I cannot be entirely certain I hadn't missed it before) in the channels with a proportion difference relative to the low frequency hum (i.e., stronger in the right channel like the hum; though less perceptible than the hum) that was also detectable with something like the HD 800 and more so with high impedance output.
- On another day after with one of the incidents with the powering on (coincident but I don't know if correlated), the hum and noise are now much less than before in the right channel (not entirely gone I think) but still distinguishable in the left (I cannot recollect how it compares now to before the change) and of course more so on the high impedance output.
(If the issue can change like this I think it would counter indicate the primary problem being shielding. Speculation: Aside from component differences between productions (and the 115V transformers), if I recall correctly from when the ZDT Jr. was announced, it was said that the only circuit change was changing a resistor value compared to the original Laconic design, so I would wonder if this had an effect (e.g. stability/oscillatory effects?) if there weren't prolific reports of problems with the original product.)
- Today the powering on issue became much worse, whereas before the amp would power on within ~ three attempts, I suspect it was closer to fifteen (over a few minutes) before it did. While I hope this is a statistical anomaly it causes immediate and especially long term reliability concerns if this happens on my next attempts to turn it on.
[Update 2018-10-04: I should mentioned that I have not had issues with powering on the amp since when I originally posted this message. I guess in retrospect, that issue and perhaps some others I had early on were separate problems from the hum that has since been root caused to be due to the magnetic field of the power transformer - that is the only issue I am still observing]
It really does seem like a large number of these amplifiers are having issues despite the official wording of "a few drop participants". While the amp sounds good when the humming/noise is obfuscated, these issues really aren't appropriate for an amp in this price category, and I don't really want a refund at this point after waiting so long, but instead a repair or corrected replacement (I am doubtful the units in the current batch would not have the same issues).

Just cancelled my order due to the following issues: 1) Way too long waiting time. Current market is being flooded with solid headamp choices and based on what Ive heard here and there, it is not gonna stop in 2018. I dont really know what exactly Massdrop/Schiit/somebody else comes with in the next 8 months but do not want to take the risks associated. I mean - ZDT Jr. is definitely gonna be competitive by that time from Sennheiser or OPT SET tube amp enthusiast's point of view but not really certain about that for those of us not so specifically oriented (see 4) ).
2) There is not enough technical info to have confidence in ordering. Having specs like exact output impedances or power rating in W into 32/64 ohms is a must from my perspective to really have trust in what I am purchasing.
3) Uncertain warranty support. What happens after the 1-year long Massdrop warranty, would anybody even consider repairing the amp? Eddie Current? Doubt it. Laconic? Be ready for the huge hassle with shipment to Russia and back. Your amp can very well get stuck on its way back to you from Russia. For me, currently residing in EU, even shipping to US within the first year would be very unpleasant.
4) The whole SBAF crowd is praising the amp based on supposedly great synergy with HD6x0/HD800 and OPT SET nature. The thing is pretty much everybody also testing with planar magnetics reported rather mediocre results... and some not-so-enthusiastic impressions with dynamics can be found too. This amp is probably good to go just for dynamic headphones, ideally high impedance or tonally brighter ones, to avoid subjective mushiness or softness.
5) As usual, too much hypetrain aka new toy syndrome. Also not many people heard the amp really. Would rather wait a year or two until things settle down a bit and shortcomings of this amp are well identified. I cannot try the amp and also cannot buy it with return option - thats yet another bummer for me.
Yeah, it is a very difficult decision for me since I wanted to own an Eddie Current amp for quite some time and SET OPT technology is also something I would like to test alongside my OTL Valhalla 2. Moreover, tonally and timbre wise, ZDT Jr. seems very very promising based on SBAF impressions so far. But, due to so many uncertainties, just need to pass this time :-/
Wish the others all the best with their decision making!

LlyhirSince you mention it more than once, I just want to point out that this amp is not a SET (single ended triode) amp. It's push pull. Being push pull, it should have better power output, but since they don't provide that info, it's not super important that it would. We still don't know it.
OPT is also the abbreviation for the output transformer itself. I've always seen these amps called OTC (output transformer coupled) but since an OTL doesn't have a transformer, I don't know that it really matters how you refer to it.
Anyway, I agree. I've yet to pull out of this drop, but I'm not confident in it. Probably going to bail and let the money go elsewhere for the time being.

ProfessorPatThanks for the correction, you are probably right! I am still kind of confused about the exact nature of the amp since I noticed this post just recently: http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/massdrop-x-eddie-current-zdt-jr-official-thread.5408/page-6#post-175835
' Not quite push pull. The design is very clever and worthy of a Nelson Pass'esque self promotional white paper. Just that Ahmed has sucky English and his universal translator often mistranslates earpad into tampon, or something like that. '

dennisvunWell I am not from Drop but I got a replacement. My replacement is night & day better than the original and the original wasn't extremely bad really only noticeable with no music playing and dead quiet in the room. The new one is fine. But some people did complain about the replacements. The problem is the toridial power source. The real ZDT has a separate power source and so avoids the problem of needing shielding, the twenty minute fix. My original one had a bad power source and I suspect that was the problem on the replacement units that people complained about. I guess the manufacturer has a problem with quality control. It is a neat amp and works best with high impedance dynamic headphones, like the HD6XX. I give Drop & Cee Tee high marks for getting the replacement units! I have the LCX, CTH & THX amps which are all great but the ZDT Jr. is my favorite. I use the RDAC with it and stream from my Squeezebox piCoreplayer. It took over a year to get it all together but I am very satisfied with the results. I hope Drop can keep offering it. I guess the ones they sold yesterday were from the replacement units.

Correct me if I'm dung, but I suspect Mr. Trump Jr. is not the Pres himself.
Of course, ZDT might also stand for zee doorknob tramp, but that paints a rather unpleasant pic. "That man in the French cartoon is doing things to a doorknob that I won't be able to unsee!"

I'll tell you what would make push me over the fence and buy this amp. A sticky provided either above the one placed by JaleesaG on 8/21/2018, or directly below it, that would give me a "warm fuzzy" feeling by answering:
  1. What the Humm issue was
  2. What was the fix
  3. What has been done to assure the original issue, or any others, will not rear its ugly head on this second drop
In other words...... I want to buy this amp but I am nervous about running into a quality problem. I am finding myself sorting through a large and confusing discussion thread. It is giving me a gosh darn headache. How about you just save me the headache, and provide a tonic for my apprehension. In return, if the tonic works and funds permitting, I'll buy it. Thanks Fellas.

Thanks for the input guys. I had hoped Drop would answer this, I was not clear in my original post. I can't quite figure out why Drop is so cavalier about this IMHO the. Problem is not the EMI (electro magnetic interference) but the fact in happened in the first place. ,$400 is paying for a product that is designed, made, and outgoing tested well. Eliminating noise is 1 of the biggest challenges in analog design, especially for a high performance audio product. This is not the software world where a major revision is followed many subsequent drops as bugs surface with customers. Even then the vendor provides a small explanation. This is ANALOG, I feel like a broken record saying this. Of course there is EMI, you design against this, that's analog design. It's like a tire company saying, there are potholes on the road which ausea the tires to right rough, so send the tires back, we will re work them. And no more assurances or explanations. Something broke down in the design, build, sell process to let these products out. What makes me nervous is that there is no official statement. Alright, I always try to point out that Drop adds more value than other sales channels when folks complain that they have found pricing from another vendor, like Amazon, that Drop is not just a price play. They aren't adding much value here though

Hi everyone, We have an update on the status of the Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr.. Unfortunately there was a delay in the shipment and we are unable to meet our estimated ship date. We're working with our partners to determine a new estimated ship date, and we should have some more information in the next few weeks. The Massdrop x Eddie Current ZDT Jr. is coming from Russia. After jumping through a ton of hoops at Russian Customs for this large shipment, our partners have had a difficult time air shipping the units due to the flight traffic from the World Cup. We’re working very closely with them to move the units over to our warehouse in New Jersey, however this is taking longer than we initially planned. We apologize for this delay, and if you don’t want to wait the additional time you can cancel your order via the transactions page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
We’ll provide an update in the next few weeks.
