I'd like to ask a question about Sennheiser/ headphones in general. I've been experimenting with different audiophile headphones for awhile and have come to the conclusion that Sennheiser is my go- to brand (I didn't like AKGs or the M50's). I value a good all- around, more passive listening experience, a good soundstage and quality in bass, and at the moment I've settled on the HD 598s and a FiiO e10k (and also have Momentum 1 on- ears for on the go). My question is if it's worth bothering with the 58x/ 600- series when I already have the 598. Apparently it has the most engaging sound but less overall quality and bass compared to say the 650/xx which I've been eyeing up for awhile, and the 58x seem pretty great for their price. What I'll likely do is sell on the cans I don't use and go with something I can settle for... And I don't particularly want to buy a better amp/dac.

I'm partial to the Sennheiser sound as well. I have HD598, HD558 (no foam mod), HD599, HD579, HD569, HD598Cs (same as 569), HD600, HD650, HD6XX, HD660S, HD700, and am waiting for the HD58X. While I like the HD598s, they have their limitations. The 598's have built up a cult following, but it's filled with a lot of people who aren't willing to pay for the more the more expensive HD600/650's so they use convenient excuses to convince themselves that the HD600/650's aren't superior. I went searching for something better when I realized the HD598's are a rather poor headphone with a lot of genres of music (even when compared with their replacements the HD599). Stick with jazz, classical, folk, singer/songwriter, some country and other similar stuff and you're fine, but go for some rock, metal, rap/hip-hop, Dance/Electronic/DJ, etc and I find them very limiting. The HD598 sold me on higher end open headphones (until then my only open cans were Porta-Pros), but then I purchased the HD600's. It was then that my love for the HD598 turned to like. It's true that the soundstage with the HD6xx line is smaller unless you have the right DAC/Amp. I recommend BH Crack, Woo WA3, or Little Dot MK II(great if you're on a budget). But the HD600 is still next level gear by every other measure when compared to the HD598. The HD6XX is warmer than the HD600, but the sound is also more refined. I haven't seen anything about how final tuning of the HD58X will sound, but I'd imagine it'll be brighter and more forward sounding than the HD6XX. The HD58X would also be a better fit with your FiiO; you may experience the Sennheiser veil if you did the HD6xx. If you went with the HD6XX and didn't want tubes I'd suggest picking up a Schiit Magni 3. In my opinion it's the first Magni that really pairs well with the 300ohm Sennheisers. It works great with the 150 ohm HD660S' as well. Hope this helps...let me know if you have any further questions.

completely different class of headphone. i own 598s and have listened extensively to 6XXs for long periods of time(borrowed a pair while my T-X0's were getting modded for a month). I personally have a hard time considering 598s gateway head-fi headphone though.. IMO their are many better gateway headphones ie grado sr60s. The 600s are full blown end game for many people that consider themselves to be audiophiles.

I purchased these mainly to add to my HD6xx series collection and also out of curiosity. If they sound good it'll be a bonus. The HD800S' I have coming tomorrow are a different story. I'm hoping to be seriously impressed... Seriously. I just hope the sound of the HD58X isn't a disappointment for those who purchased these on a budget and were looking for that Sennheiser signature sound. Only about what, 7-8 weeks to go?

I hope they ain't a disappointment either but the graph really looks promising. If the graphs really are true, then this might have the sennheiser hd650 sound without their classic veil!

My opinion/experience with the veil is that it's much more a symptom of one's signal path than the headphone itself. This is just my opinion and others may not agree, but let me illustrate using the HD650 as an example.
When I first purchased my HD650s I was using a NuForce Icon DAC with my headphones. The HD650s sounded great (though warmer than my HD600s) with the Icon; not super open compared to other headphones I owned, but I wouldn’t say veiled. The next amp I purchased was an OG Schiit Magni. The HD650s sounded rather poor on that amp when compared to the Icon. The life felt like it was being sucked out of them: very veiled. Enter the Asgard 2 and the 650s were back. My next amp was a Little Dot MK II. Paired with the Voskhod tubes in the LD II the 650s were the most open and awake that I'd ever heard them (OG Modi was doing DAC duties). The 650s paired really well with the Valhalla 2 as well (Bifrost MB for DAC). Again, not very open sounding, but not veiled. I especially like them with the Amperex Bugle Boys. I tried the Magni 2U somewhere along the way and found it uninspiring as well with the HD650s. Then I picked up a Jotunheim with the OG balanced DAC module and a balanced cable. This was certainly a moment for the HD650s. I was very surprised at how much better they sounded; better than I’d ever heard them before. The thing I noticed was how much more alive and open they sounded I added the new MB DAC module to the Jot when it was released, and that was an improvement as well. The icing on the cake was when I got my hands on a Woo WA3. When I plugged the 650s into the Woo and began to listen I just started grinning from ear to ear. Then I spent hours listening to my favorite music. Using the Jot as my DAC/pre-amp into the Woo is my favorite way to listen to them, and I can’t imagine what it might take (probably a lot of $$$) to make them sound better. Openness, power, clarity with warmth, dynamics; it’s just a great pairing. I should also add that the new Magni 3 is an excellent pairing for the HD600, HD650/HD6XX, HD660S, HD700, HD800S and lots of other cans as well.
I can’t wait to run the HD58X on my setup. I’ll probably go with the Jot balanced out or the Little Dot MK II. The 150ohm cans don’t pair as well with the Woo unless I roll in some different tubes.

For myself, the HD6XX has more of a high quality analog tape feel to the music versus live performance feel. It sounded absolutely fantastic on my system, which is what piqued my interest for the HD58X, being more HD660S like tuned according to many who have heard the prototype.

I have an HD 599, and an HD 650. The HD 599 actually has stronger bass and a more immediately exciting sound, but it just doesn’t carry the same smoothness and unstrained detail as the HD 650. The HD 650 simply gives a noticeable step up and more insight to your music, and while not a “hyped” sound it is very beguiling and easy to digest.

I like the HD599s as well, but I've also had intermodulation distortion issues with them on certain tracks (Deadmau5-Let Go, around 2:14 when things pick up). Turn it up too much and the bass starts to really mess with the splashy treble sounds; this isn't a problem with the HD650s. I've seen it on other tracks as well. Still a great headphone and I really like it's sound signature, but not the best with certain genres.

This was a quote from the thread on Head-Fi
"I heard an updated version of the Jubilee.... have to clarify what I'm allowed to say or not say at this point. So I'll leave it at one word for now: Wow. More soon, if possible."
