Product Description
From Mitchell & Johnson, an exciting new hi-fi company out of London, the MJ1 and HP1 headphones allow you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. They do this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use Read More
damien_chungI have mrspeakers Aeon, and they are quite incredible all around.
Planars really can compete, but this type of dynamic electret thing doesn't do anything.
Finally! These will be perfect for me--my ears are more square-shaped than most people's and are set much closer to my nose as well. Can't wait to try 'em!
So this is one heck of a deal! the retail price of $399.99 is wrong: retail is GBP399.99! That's over $500 retail. M&J's need a long burn in to achieve maximum quality - some reviewers say up to 200 hours - but my impression is they are pretty darn incredible all around. I backed the GL2s on Kickstarter. Like them very much. I have been obsessed with my Nura headphones (different company) because the technology to shape sound based on a kind of sonar snapshot of your ear just works and is astonishing. I haven't yet compared my Nura's to M&J's top of the line JP1, as I just got those yesterday. I wonder if M&J is getting out of the headphone business or is just doing clearance to make room for the next wave of headphones from them. Currently, they are focusing on their coming release of audio components... Not sure if any JP1s were left for MassDrop: M&J made this same offer to their Kickstarter backers - $89.99 for the MJ1 and $99.99 for the MJ2 and JP1. MJ2 retails for GBP499.99 and JP1 for GBP599.99 so if they do have overstock for Massdrop: we might see these others soon here again, too. BTW... yes out of the box the JP1 is very impressive: zero distortion, easily driven without the need for an extra headphone amp, and a 3-d soundscape that is astonishingly clear. They aren't Stax but I'm not going to spend $2000 on a set of those and I wince at even the amazing current deal for the HiFiMan XX at $600 going on right now - the Nuras are a new technology everyone needs to try and I feel beyond satisfied with both sets of my M&Js. So in summary: WOW $89.99 for MJ1 headphones is an INCREDIBLE DEAL and with free shipping (Kickstarter backers like me still had to cough up GBP25 for shipping... on the flip side: I did score JP1s for a grand total of GBP124.99).
Sorry, I don't own these and demo'd them too far back to clearly remember my impression of them. I just happen to had been living in Neihu and the local shop was pushing Verisonix products since their sales office was nearby. All of the headphones they had on demo were very bright though. If you're set on the Mitchell and Johnsons, the MJ2s are a rebrand of another Verisonix product that HEAD4 (Taiwanese audiophile site) was quite complimentary of.
Reviews, in general, are subjective. That's actually what makes reviews ... reviews and not guides.
If you want an "objective review" what you really want is a buyer's guide. I.E. "This car has wheels. It also has an engine. It does not have helicopter blades."
So they look cool. Can anyone confirm if they're actually wearable? Between the square shape and the huge offset of the headband I have a hard time believing they both stay on the head and do so comfortably. Really if someone can find a picture of someone wearing them that would be ideal.
The box looks pretty good but the contents are disappointing, looks very cheap. The headphones are placed onto a plastic mold-thing that's covered with fabric, the fabric carrying case is dirty (looks like someone used it to wipe something), cables are pretty nice (2 braided and 1 coiled), the airplane adapter looks cheap and one of the plugs aren't straight. The headphones itself, doesn't fit well, there's not much left-right swivel, the headband is offset far too forward and it can get uncomfortable after 5 mins of wearing it. I haven't used it much but so far pretty disappointed that I paid $AUD150 inc. shipping for this. Might add more about the sound in the future.
I have 100 hours on the phones so far. I have been playing Wake up in the sky by Gucci Mane, Bruno Mars and Kodak Black on repeat most of the 100 hours. I am playing these through a Magni 3 and using a Amplifier Surgery silver plated copper wire cable. Out of the box they sounded real bad with no bass and the highs were faint. After 100 hours burn in they sound very good. The bass is firm and not boomy and the highs and mids sound great with little bleed from the bass. I have played other genres of music and they are sounding much better. With more hours I am hearing more detail and a larger soundstage.
Morri2Awesome! Nice to hear! (no pun intended) I can notice an increase in sound quality. It sounds pretty good with certain genres. I actually prefer it over my ath-m50x for certain songs.
OK, so i let them burn in for 5 days now. The first day right out of the box it sounded dull, dark en undefined, But right now the sound is cristal clear, stereo image wide and reasonable deep, the bass sounds exactly like it should be, the middle and high frequencies show their electrostatic nature, so sounds really natural and fast also, nothing to complain about. cons, actually only one the cables that the headphone came with, sound really like garbage. rightnow i am playing with a tiny cheap blue tooth receiver, can walk around within 15 meters of the source, so now the mj1 really opened up with the receiver, it can pay really loud without any distortion.
Finally some words about all the negative comments here.anumber of them i donot trust atall, imo they were just written from people that are only trying to destroy this massdrop offer, some are comments from angry teenagers. I advice people o be patient an run them in for minimal of 100 hours, pair it with good quality cables, or likei did go wireless with blue tooth, and you will be rewarded with imo high end sound
Florianskisure … I just wanted to correct this part - > "they are as neutral as it gets"
and there are other (mostly BA IEMs for example the Etymotic ER 4 or Dynamic D for example the akg k 601) headphones in the same budget spectrum that are more neutral than the dt 880.
