Best thing about this is that it is very lightweight and packable. The water resistance did start to fade somewhat over the years of usage, especially in the hood area.
Eventually the taped seams failed after ~4+ years, not the first taped seam jacket to fail this way, at least this one lasted longer.
It is very pricey though.
Great value for this rain jacket. Took it out on a full days hike and it started raining and hailing... stayed dry from the outside but did manage to build up moisture on the inside despite the pit zips. This doesn’t surprise me as I tend to perspire quite a bit when hiking. For the money it’s 4.5 stars, compared to a jackets twice as much $$$ it’s a 4 star. I would recommend it.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase. On a recent trip I used the jacket in heavy rain hiking with the pit zips open and was comfortable. The temperature dropped overnight so the next morning it was perfect over a long sleeve shirt all zipped up to break the wind. I had my phone in a Ziploc bag in the chest pocket, the bag stayed so dry I think the pocket alone would have been safe. Overall I am super impressed and recommend this jacket. Outdoor Research makes good products that fit me well and this is no different. I'm going to start looking for a pair of their rain pants after using this jacket.
Other than a little snug (buy larger if you intend to layer under) it fit as expected and does the job. The brim of the hood is a bit deformed when you pack it into the pocket, but it reshapes easily enough.
The pit zips and hood brim are well worth the extra weight over the no-frills Helium version. Makes the jacket that much more effective and comfortable.
I have not been in a downpour with it backpacking yet so it is a bit premature to judge it. It is lightweight which I like and it has kept the rain out in a few showers.
