Would this work to heat a tent from the inside in -5 degrees Celsius? Any idea on how this will compare to the BRS-55 lantern which has no mantle? (I'm sure the light will be dimmer, but I'm specifically interested in heating)

I got a different product that is basically a gas candle. It doesn't warm up anything then my hands when I put them over it, but it'll be enough to make me a bit more comfortable at cold nights before going to sleep. I don't worry about CO poisoning since it's too weak, I'll be using it for less than an hour, and in a two layer tent.

For me, I wouldn't bring an LED lantern when backpacking. I bring a headlamp (great for keeping your hands free when you need light), and a single-AAA LED light that is super small, and I can tie off to the roof of my tent to provide some soft light for getting ready for bed, etc. I have some Black Diamond LED lanterns that I bring car-camping, but I just can't justify the weight or bulk when backpacking (headlamp and small flashlight/torch cover my needs for light). This Primus lantern really is a luxury item for me when it's going to be COLD and can't have a fire (Southern California mountains). It just creates a nice ambiance and gives off some comforting heat. On a related note, I've seen some people discussing the Bulin alternative to the Primus. I bought one (as I was waiting for my Massdrop order for a Primus to be filled), and was mildly impressed with it. Ultimately I returned it and waited for the Primus, and I am glad I did. Night and day difference in build quality. And light output seems greater with the Primus, probably due to the more open mesh around the mantle.

"a pioneer in outdoor cooking since 1982", yet they equipped a 1953 expedition? You might want to proofread that copy.
P.S. Primus was established in 1892.

I got the lamp and it works nicely. It was provided with only one mantle. After first use, would it survive a backpacking trip or crumble? Can I expect to easily find replacement ones on a trip in New-Zealand?

guy.regevI had the same concerns about the mantle. That prompted me to set right out researching replacements. It turns out that the Coleman #51 made for their compact lanterns also fits this Primus. I bought some on Amazon.com at a pretty reasonable price. However, after several trips I have not yet had to replace my original Primus mantle that came with the Steel Micron. The steel cage and the storage bag and some thought put into where to pack it have protected it just fine. That said, and given their low weight/bulk, I wouldn't want to go out without a couple spares.

guy.regevLike seenypaul - I’ve been very surprised at how well the mantles hold up, I have two very similar lanterns from brunton and Coleman which go through a few trips without needing to be replaced. With that being said, they weigh nothing so a couple spare is just good insurance.

Looks like it is designed to sit on an isobutane cartridge. My question: Is that a proprietary hard to find mantle or can I use a universal coleman mantle I can buy anywhere?

Hey everyone - thanks for the questions and sorry that we didn't provide all the info you needed to help you join the drop. I'll try to answer everything at once here.
People like a lantern like this because it is really warm and it has a very pleasant glow, unlike most LED lanterns. It also is compact and using the super popular compressed fuel cartridges that most people are using these days.
1) the long cable from both sides is to hang the lantern, could be from a tree branch, a pole, or a cord strung between two trees. @Woodythehiker
2) This uses compressed gas canisters (iso-butane cartrige), like those made by Primus, MSR, Snow Peak, JetBoil, Kovea, Etc. @Penandink
3) Primus advises against using this in a confined area with no air flow. But I'm sure you can find people who have used this safely to warm and dry their tent with proper ventilation. @RustyBridges
4) Kovea does make an LPG adaptor to use devices like this and top-mount stoves with a propane canister (like the green Coleman ones found in every sport and hardware store) @ribo
5) Mantles are made by Primus and are very affordable, though you shouldn't have to replace them too often. @Paul321 says that you can used Coleman #51 mantles too. @G-Deuce
6) Estimated ship date is March 31, which is stated at the bottom of the product description page. @wildrnesxperienc
I looked through a bunch of videos about this lantern and haven't found anything *great* but here's one to check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36RREcJfCtU

WoodythehikerThat's fake news https://backpackinglight.com/cooking-in-a-tent-caffin/
I'll use it in a tent, but I think the cable is too long for that, and generally it's safer on the ground

Outbound_JesseIt was $35+$3.75 shipping. It seems to come up every couple of months. I've almost pulled the trigger twice in the past, I couldn't pass it up this last time. I'm pretty excited about it. I plan on ordering the Kovea Propane tank converter for it (green Coleman cans), esp now that I've learned how to refill those cans.
