Founded by two American lawyers whose world travels inspired their affinity for handcrafted goods, Res Ipsa got its start crafting colorful loafers made from vintage kilim rugs. And while the company’s loafers have expanded to tweed, and its product line now includes travel bags, Res Ipsa still sources its wares from the places that make them best. And these tweed loafers are no exception. Exclusive to Massdrop, they’re crafted in Turkey out of British-sourced tweed. Finished with a stitched leather sole and a rubber heel, they’re available in herringbone and Black Watch—two archetypal British patterns.
There’s no fabric more typical of the United Kingdom than tweed. After all, this tightly woven wool was popularized in the early 20th century by British outdoorsmen who sought it out for its durable, water-resistant qualities. Even the word itself is thought to have been derived from the Scots word for twilled cloth, which is known, like tweed is, for its diagonal ridges. So it comes as little surprise that the world’s finest tweed hails from the UK.
