Product Description
Seiko’s “Baby Monster” is derived from the company’s original “Monster” line, which featured the same chunky hands and dial layout. This version—much more affordable than its predecessor—scales the water resistance down to a still-commendable 100 meters, and swaps out the screw-down crown for a standard one Read More

Here's a shot of my srpb39j1 Baby Orange Monster next to my srp639 Baby Tuna. Love them both. Baby Tuna has a screw down crown, better lume by far, 200m water resistance, solid caseback and carries the Prospex logo of approval. The Baby Monster on the other hand has a clear case back and non-screw dowm crown. It is still relatively capable with 100m water resistance, but the lume is noticeably less powerful and it's not Prospex approved. The Baby Monster is definitely more of a fashion watch which is still capable for watersports, while the Baby Tuna is a real dive watch. The Tuna however costs around twice as much, making the baby monster a relative bargain. And even then, both of these watches are still "baby" versions of the original Tuna and orange Monster respectively. Both great watches.

Note to those considering this drop: It's worth pointing out to at least those interested in an Orange Monster, that this drop is for the SRPB-series, and not the SRP-series (without the "B"), and there are some pretty significant differences in the appearance of the two, even though both are referred to as "Baby Monsters." For my taste, and again, especially for those looking for an Orange Monster, the SRPB's are kind of muted-looking compared to the SRP's. You may feel otherwise, but here's what I mean:

Both are called Baby Monsters, and both are Orange, but there are some big differences in the orange numerals in the bezel and the black chapter ring on the dial right? Obviously these are not the same watch, despite the nick-names. There are other differences (which I'll leave you to investigate) including the price--SRP483 sells for $149-ish. But--- if you're a straight-up, Orange Monster kinda guy, you might want to compare both before you pull the trigger? BTW: MD has done a drop for the SRP483 Orange Monster (and it's Blue/White cousin, the Ice Monster). You can see the inactive drop here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/seiko-5-srp48x-baby-monster-automatic-watch

It might have a better value as used. However, I have never sold one so it is just a guess.

WARGAgain on low-end watches the difference isn't going to be significant--unless you can find someone who buys into the myth/bullshit about Japan made watches--at that price point. Given a choice of two otherwise identical watches, how much more is buyer X willing to pay for the "J" model? Enough to recover the extra you paid for it? Maybe, but no guarantee.

I thought the "Baby" part in Baby Monster was referring to it's size :( ... Maybe next time!

$140 for a Seiko auto with a 4R36 hackable, manual wind movement seems to be a pretty solid deal. No screw-down crown and and only 100 M water resistance, but still capable enough for the majority of us.

The bezel indices are for timing, the dial indices are for time. They are not always aligned and thus not "doubles". Having minute indices on the bezel improves readability when using the bezel.

please note that the original monster, which is extremely popular, have minute indices around the entire bezel rather than just the first 15 minutes.

2nd drop on these in a few months, iirc, but where's a drop on the monster? That's been sitting at around 1000 requests for seemingly ever.

Vince13Just to clarify you response, indication of water resistance of 100 m doesn't imply that you can actually dive to the depth of 100 meters. You can swim in salt water with this watch, and ocasionaly dive to couple meters depth. Also, after swimming in salt water, rinsing with tap water is recommended.

Is the diameter really 44mm? Or is that including the crown and crown guard? I've seen several sites where this is listed as 42mm (and one where it is listed at 46mm). 40mm is my usual limit on size, but I might push it to 42mm for this one. Unfortunately the Orange is gone already.

Never mind, found my answer on YouTube... too big for me. Especially with a 51mm lug-to-lug.
