I own many headphones from Sennheiser, Focal, Hifiman. Some of them are quite more expensive (Focal Clear MG, Sennheiser HD800S…). I don’t know if buying from Drop is the best deal around, sometimes it is, often it is not. I bought a few units on Drop including HD6XX, HD58X, O2 SDAC amp. I also own many others including HD600, HD598, HD25, ATH-M50X, Momentum 3, Momentum 4, Focal Bathys, PXC550II, Amperior, and more. I am simply going to affirm one thing: If I was forced to keep only one headphone, only one, then this would be it: the Sennheiser HD660S2. I’m not suggesting this is the best headphone, I’m saying it’s one of the few I could live with as the sole headphone I could keep. It sounds good with any music genre. It is compatible with most setups. Yes it needs a dedicated amp. No it is not the best headphone for travelling or for noise isolation, but I could live with this just one headphone and enjoy music. Regards. If I was allowed a second pair for outside/travelling Bluetooth use, then I would choose either the Sennheiser Momentum 4 (or the Focal Bathys, depending on budget available). Regards,

PeteMtlIn your experience, how does the bass of the 660 S2 compare with that of the 800S ? Same question, please, about the comparative soundstage of the two headphones? Thanks.

hatmanThis is an easy one. HD800S was never reputed for its bass and dynamics in the bass region. It is a little light but precise. On the other hand, HD660S2 has the best bass of all the 600 and 800 series headphones, closing in on the Focal MG for the quality and dynamics of its bass. Compared to the HD650 or 6XX, the HD660S2 has more impactful, more dynamic bass, more extended in the sub bass. It also bleeds less into the mid bass and lower mids than the HD650 or 6XX. The downside of the HD660S2, if any, is the mids that are far more transparent on the HD800S or even the HD600. Even the HD650 or 6XX has somewhat more transparent mids in the upper mids region (HD660S2 is somewhat more polite in the upper mids and lower highs, but has clear highs nevertheless, but not to the extent of the HD800S). The soundstage is far superior on the HD800S, or should I say wider. However, the HD660S2, like all other 600 series has better depth than HD800S. HD800S has a more forward soundstage, if that makes any sense, it’s my opinion. If I compare all 600 series, I would say the HD660S2 has better bass and sub bass, better soundstage, better extension on highs, but more polite high mids/low highs and overall mids that are very close to HD600 and HD650/6XX, but slightly less transparent (the difference is subtle however and I could live well with the mids if the HD660S2). Overall I find that the HD660S2 is probably the most polyvalent with most music genres of all the headphones mentioned here. Hope it helps.

PeteMtlMost crucially, what about the 58X?! Have you no love for that mighty underdog? How does that scrappy rascal measure up to the imposing, indomitable 660 S2? Please, I implore you to ramble aimlessly at great length, devoid of restraint or internal logic, only channeling your innermost organic truth to reveal ultimate wisdom. I humbly and spastically await your noble loquacity. (no, seriously...) : p

eddiezrThe HD58X is a very good headphone considering its price. Compared to the HD6XX, it has more sub bass but is quite colder in the mids (HD58X have clearer but more nasal mids, not that magical mid timbre that HD6XX and HD650 are famous for) and has less high frequency (treble) energy. Compared to HD660S2, the HD58X is a less exciting headphone. HD660S2 has better sub bass, better bass, far better mids and more airy and exciting highs. But the HD660S2 is more than three times more expensive than the HD58X. I do not know any other open back headphone in the 150$ range that sounds better than the HD58X. I personally bought three pairs of HD58X: one that I use with portable equipment (its 150 ohms and great sensitivity makes it useable with iPhones, IPads, laptop computers and other devices without a dedicated headphone amp), one that I have bought as a present to my father in law (at 80 years old he just loves the HD58X, they sound clear and he can wear them for long periods without ear fatigue) and one pair for my teen boy (unfortunately he now prefers my Momentum 4 Bluetooth headphones and he borrows my pair as much as he can, may I blame him?). So bottom line the HD58X is a very good headphone available at a steal price (150$) and I do recommend it strongly. It has more sub bass than HD600 or HD6XX/650. But it doesn’t sound as good as either HD600, HD650/6XX or HD660S2 in my opinion. All of these are far more expensive however. There you have it, my honest opinion regarding the HD58X.
