This is a lo-fi product only and shouldn't be used with headphones that cost more than approx. $100. I strongly recommend extending your budget to at least entry-level audiophile quality.

So, does this cut the pre-out when you plug in headphones?
This won't be answered by Massdrop, because they know NOTHING about these products, nothing at all.

mickeyjuiceThis is an amp for speakers, not a headphone amp or a DAC. The 3.5mm on the front is an auxiliary input. There is also a full sized RCA input on the back. You can't use this for headphones. A common setup would be to use a dac headphone amp combo and then send rca's from the line out of the dac to the A2 to power your speakers. If you want to use headphones and speakers this amp would pair nicely with an smsl M3 or an O2/Odac combo. You want something with line outs and not pre outs because the A2 has its own volume control. You could also connect the A2 directly to the line out of your soundcard.
Hope this helps.

Just Received mine on Friday and I've had the weekend to test it out.
In my experience this is the best performing smsl amp. I own the sa-36, sa-60, and sa-160 as well as the a2.
The sa-160 is really powerful and sounds great. However, the power brick is massive, it really is overkill for 90% of speakers on a desk, and there was a slight high frequency whine that never went away.
The sa-36 sounds great, maybe a little warmer than neutral, but may not have enough power for some inefficient speakers, and has no bells and whistles.
I use the sa-60 in a custom battery powered boombox and I have no complaints. Almost the same features as the a2 and sounds great.
The a2 is the standout of the bunch. It sounds great and is the most neutral to my ears. The a2 has enough power on a desk setup for pretty much any speakers. The tone controls work nicely, although I don't use them. The sub out has no built in crossover, but its nice that it's there. The amp is dead silent with no background noise. I even like the digital volume control. All the smsl amps are nicely built and look great, but I really like the updated styling of the a2.
I am simply amazed that an amplifier so small and inexpensive can perform so well. I've been into hifi for a long time and have owned lots of gear. Good amplifiers have always been big, heavy, and could function as space heaters. These class D amps are very impressive and for this price the smsl a2 is one of the best.
If you need a speaker amp for your desk, don't hesitate to buy this.
Cheers.

I have bookshelf speakers (Klipsch R-14m) that are continuous 50 W (200 W peak). Is this amplifier sufficient for those? I currently own a stereo amp that's 25 W per channel, and it's not sufficient (too much noise).
davidlyThis will be perfectly fine, for the vast majority of the time, even when played loud, speakers use less than 1W of power.

davidlyMight be light. This amp is rated at 40w but that's into 4 ohms. Your speakers are 8 ohm IIRC. You might want more power for a big audio experience but you'd have to be the judge of that. Mine drives a pair of Infinity RS3's very nicely in the room space in which they live.

Anyone else receiving a product that has scratches on the face, including the 3.5mm jack quite scratched?

Spartacus1973There is a thin protective clear film that you have to peel off from the face to reveal the actual surface, dunno if you already peeled it off or not. The film gets scratches, but the actual surface does not.

Hi, Those $59.99 sound interesting. Any experience about pairing this amp with an SMSL Sanskrit DAC/Headphone Amp? Thanks in advance.

Look at the outputs on the back. If you're buying this, you most likely "need" it.

How did Massdrop calculate shipping cost ? SMSL A2 shipping to Indonesia $17,25 and HD 6XX bigger and more expensive is only $15. It does not make sense.

heri1461It's not just weight, it's also the cost of shipping from whatever company they are getting these from and then shipping it to you.

As I said, Massdrop have so little idea about these products, they can't even answer a simple question.

mickeyjuiceyour question could have also been answered with some light googling. it's also not their responsibility to field technical questions on the use of any product, they are just the group buy organizers.
as answered above, there are no pre-outs to be cut; headphones are also irrelevant to this unit.
