I have a soft spot for DAC/AMP combos and I'm really tempted... although things like Bluetooth and (ugh!) MQA actually turn me off! But I don't have to use them, right? 😆
Wow. Either you are really stupid or one of the most willingly ignorant people I have ever come across. I say "I'm trying to explain what a DAC does," and directly after you respond with, "I'm not sure what this conversation aims to accomplish."
cooljoe123This may disappoint you, but you're not particularly convincing in your "explanations". Perhaps you're specializing in "fucking" DACs, I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with those. Since you seem to be unwilling to check the M500II manual as I suggested, let me explain how this DAC works:
SPDIF NORMAL mode for coax and optical bypasses the XMOS chip and feeds the DIR chip directly. Whether you like it or not, there is no "relay switch going off between files". For starters, there are no "files". And there's no "switch" either. Any MQA content in the bitstream (shaped dither) is just noise as there is nothing processing it. ES9038PRO is not MQA-aware.
SPDIF PROCESSOR mode enables the XMOS chip that implements the MQA renderer. Still no "files" here, but your idea of the "relay switch" is there - I prefer to say that if the the proprietary dither containing lossy high-frequency information is detected, it gets "unfolded" as the sample rate is multiplied. I have no need for any of this, so I use the NORMAL setting.

"As a DAC/amp, the SMSL M500 MKII brings a detailed and natural presentation while staying on the safer side for sibilance, which is consistent with what I’ve heard with most other SMSL amps."
