A mainstay in the Spyderco collection since the 1980s, the Police is now in its fourth iteration. This version features 4.4 inches of Böhler-Uddeholm K390, an advanced particle metallurgy tool steel with high volumes of vanadium, tungsten, and cobalt Read More
Smooth action, rock solid lock up, the fit and finish is great on mine. Spydieflicks well for a mid/back lock. Carries slimmer than my military while packing (an unnecessary amount) more blade. Haven't sharpened or put k390 thru it's paces yet but I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs. I'm happy with it.
First, this is my first "Police" model. I do have 4 other Spydercos but none are traditional back locks. Which is one point of my review.
The back lock's tension on this knife is incredibly strong! Too strong. The tension bar's stiffness coupled with the fact that edges of the lock button (and all the other metel edges including the "Spydey Hole") are sharper than the actual blade, makes operation very unpleasant.
And of course, this massive lock tension also makes deploying the blade very difficult. If you have the grip strength and calloused hands of a Polish lumberjack, this is your folder.
So at this point, I don't know if the unnecessary and painfully strong lock bar is a defect or not.
The fit & finish of the knife is worthy of Spyderco except for the blade itself. In fact, it might be the worst finish I've ever seen on any knife... except maybe one I got when I was 12 at a County Fair.
Looking down the blade at a low angle from ricasso to tip, the flat grind looks like salvaged corrugated tin.
The blade spine resembles the edges die-cut pot metal.
Other than the Dragonfly Salt, my other three Spydies are Golden CO made. The Police 4 is made in Japan. In my opinion, the US made Spydercos are made better, especially the blades. I have mechanical watches, rifle scopes and other optics made in Japan that I wouldn't trade for anything. They are of the finest quality and craftsmanship. But, in this example at least, they really dropped the ball.
Bob_VelleYou can file any sharp edge to your taste. I have done that on the Spyderhole on mine...
Also to open it I recommend the Spyderdrop opening. It is so easy and fast. Hope it helps.
Agree with you about Japanese made Spyderco QC versus Golden made. I was lucky mine though...
