Designed for audio professionals who demand absolutely clear, neutral sound, the Status Audio CB-1s are an excellent alternative to pricier studio headphones—in fact, The Verge says they might be the best headphones under $100. The 50-millimeter drivers provide true-to-life sound reproduction without adding any bass, midrange, or highs, while the soft and thick ear pads offer pressure-free comfort for those long listening and mixing sessions Read More

I own these. Sound 200% Better that M50x, across the whole spectrum.
Also so these are one of the most comfortable closed back headphones I have ever tried. Those pads are soft and lush. Everytime I touch the pads I look around me to see if anyone noticed the arousal my fingers just received. The pleather is that soft and the memory foam that cushiony.
If if you want closed back headphones, with clear, clean, and precise low end without sacrificing mids or highs, these are the cans.
***Excellent for Metal Heads Like me!*** (Listen to "Lateralus" by Tool, oh those drums!)
The only cans in this price range that give it a run for its place are the M40x's, but only after you replace the pads with HM5's Angled Sheepskin or Pleather. So that's $100+$40, this are $54.99-$60 and need nothing!
Get them, if this deal is not good for you because of shipping, customs, international , etc, just get them from Status Audio. When you sign up at their website they give you a 15% coupon to use. And you get them in a few days.
***Use coupon "BlackFriday" at status audio checkout for a hell of a deal*** (yes still works, I just used it last week)
Also so you can pay with Amazon when you buy from status audio. Comes in handy if you have amazon gift card balance or Amazon store card you want to use.
You are welcome. Enjoy your new favorite closed back cans.
PS: the cable bundle they sell for their HD headphones works with these. Get it for $10. You get two nice flat cables, one of them black with mic+1, the other one is flat and red color. Very nice cable. Work with all my other 3.5mm jack headphones.
Here's my two cents:
As an owner of these, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. They're pretty transparent and detailed, but they sound so fake and artificial compared to the K182s and (what I remember of) the M40Xs.
Plus I dropped them only a few times (a 2ft drop off my couch mind you) and they cracked. IMO not even good enough build quality for day to day use, unless you're super careful and will never drop them once. I completely disagree with statements like "build quality isn't the best, but it's good enough". Beats have better build, if that gives you an impression of how bad these are built.
The top comment (for me rn) says that they'd be $90 after shipping anyways, so I say either go Porta Pro X or budget IEM for mobile use, or something like HD558/M40X for at home use.
Of course you can do whatever you want, and if you want to ignore my experience go right ahead, but I though I'd give my two cents to whoever wants to listen.
EnsisTheSlayerA good review and I somewhat agree. These shouldn't be your only cans. Pair these with the philips 9500 (more neutral and open) and you have a collection worth 10x as much.
IMO the quality is acceptable for a sub $100 pair.
EnsisTheSlayerI have to heartily disagree with your review (other than the comments about build quality, but that should be well apparent by now). The sound on these is really killer for the $60 price tag. MUCH better than M40x, or any other budget open-back can under $100.
Your subjective "fake and artificial" comments make no sense. These cans sound crisp, detailed, and have a similar frequency response as the Fidelio X2's, without all the "grain" of the X2. They are slightly V-shaped, but they are accurate, and have very decent soundstage and imaging, on par with much more expensive cans.
These flog the M40x all day. They're great headphones, as long as you are prepared to baby them as desk cans.
You can order these straight from Status Audio using discount codes "audiophile" or "status20" to get 20% off. With shipping (for me it's 3.99 USD) it comes out to be $67 even.
I discover a lot of neat stuff through Massdrop, but I often end up finding better or equivalent deals for them elsewhere, with more convenient shipping, which is too bad because I like MD and the community...

christodioYeah, I've only purchased one item through Massdrop so far (and have yet to receive it) -- Fostex T-X0 Planar Magnetic Headphones. I wasn't able to find anything with that level of quality for the price offered. Many other items here are reasonably priced but readily available elsewhere for similar, if not lower, prices. And with more immediate shipping. But I keep coming back to look for unique items like my first purchase.
Lots of complaints on reddit about bad build quality. From what I read, this is basically rebranded OEM headphones. And it doesn't seem seem to live up to the hype.
EDIT: The OEM brand is Somic.
How would you rate either/both Yenona/OneOdio? I'm always interested in a good, cheap pair of cans.
For the record, I use these Status ones daily and love them. Paid more than $54, though.
I realize these cans get good reviews, which are true
I just got to mention something about the build. These are made of mostly(entirely?) plastic, and the plastic feels cheap. Its not the same quality plastic as something like ATH M50x
really? When one of my cables broke, status audio sent me 2 brand new ones, free of charge, i didnt even need o pay shipping. Not only that but before the CB-1s, I had a pair of HD Twos, the headband snapped, so i contacted Status Audio, and they gave me the option of the CB-1s or the OB-1s, again, free of charge and shipping.
My daily portable drivers. Too bad I already purchased these directly from Status. I felt like these were a STEAL at $80. $55 is insanity! Nice job Massdrop!
MusicLoverFor a more neutral listening experience, ATH m40x or these are recommended. The m40x are seriously uncomfortable out of the box and need replacement pads immediately in my opinion. The CB-1s however are very comfortable out of the box because their pads are so thick and soft. For the m40x, you are paying for the sound and superb build quality. For CB-1, you pay for sound and comfortable pads. I hope this helps.
Update: Just a few month later the Crack on the headband has cracked even further and now my CB-1 have now reside to being backup headphones. I stand by them sounding great for the price, but build quality is a huge letdown
Been using these for 2.5 years now and for the price they're worth it (in terms of sound). However, some things to note:
-It's all plastic with maybe a bit of metal on the cups. That's not neccessarily a bad thing but on mine the plastic in the slider has started to crack.
-Status has had a history of not being completely honest. I cannot tell if this is still true, but they claimed that instead of spending money on advertising, they spent money on R&D to make great sounding headphones. What they actually did was rebrand some ChiFi headphones. That's not neccessarily a bad thing as there are many great ChiFi headphones and you get real customer support from Status. I have not been able to determine if the CB-1 are rebranded headphones.
My Status Audio HD One and HD2 have both snapped (twice each). This was apparently a very widespread problem which prompted the HD2 to be discontinued rather quickly. That being said, Status has covered me for every single replacement. You won't get that kind of support if you buy their ChiFi counterpart.
LD_TypeI don't know man, great customer service and honestly I haven't seen any headset like this. So I really do think they created it. I think it sounds great for the price and mine is about 8 months old and still rocking. Yeah it's really plasticky and cheap feeling but comfortable and sounds great. I gotta say, I think it's a buy all day.
piedrafriaThis is a bit late of a reply, but I found the original headphones. They're called the Somic MM163 and if you look them up you'll see it is the same headphones just with branding.
I recently purchased a pair of these after I borrowed some from a co-worker. They do have a break-in period, where they start sounding better after about 25 hours and improve a tad at 50 hours. The mids open up and the highs get smoother. Bass was good to begin with and I didn't notice much of a change in quantity after break in. I almost purchased a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50x this past weekend, but after listening to them in-store I still think the Status Audio CB-1 is a more enjoyable headphone. I just think the M50x, while better than my old M50 (non-X) just sounds dry on the upper frequencies. The lows and mids on the M50 are decent and probably flatter, the CB-1 beats it with a considerably wider soundstage. The CB-1 also sound pretty good and even at lower volumes. I feel that the M50x needs to be played bit more volume to get things sounding even (where the bass or treble might be overpowering the other at lower levels). I basically use the CB-1 as my go to closed headphone when sound isolation is needed. Keep in mind the price / performance of these. I basically purchased them since they perform well for the money and I wanted to see what a sub $100 headphone could do. Needless to say I'm quite happy with these and I would purchase again. They sound ok/decent at first but noticeably better after break-in. Hope this info helps. By the way I just did the ZMF Ori pads (massdrop purchase) for $50 that will go on my Hifiman HE-400i, so for a little more than a pair of nice pads, you get a complete set of headphones.
