So this review is a few years in but it is my favorite portable DAC I travel a lot with the military and I originally used it with my AKG M220's and now im using it with my HD5XX and it is putting in work while I wait for a larger DAC to come in
Mine is a bit noisy. Not very noticeable but the noise floor is definitely audible when using with IEMs or other sealed cans. I typically use it with open-back cans, and I rarely notice the noise with those. Mine also has two other issues. First, it occasionally cuts out. Turning it off and back on instantly fixes this. No big deal to me, as it's right there by my hand on my desk. Second, though, it occasionally goes into what I've taken to calling "Meltdown" mode, where it will get warm, then quickly (within 2 minutes) get very, very hot. Again, power cycling fixes this, but if I don't notice it happening until it gets super hot, I'm out of luck while it cools down for 15 minutes or so. I'm using it basically as a computer sound card replacement for general computer use and gaming, NOT for critical listening/audiophile stuff, but when I do break out my Grados or Focals and listen to music, this thing DOES surprise me with its overall sound quality. Definitely a good value, if it doesn't melt itself at random some day.
This is a fine product. Don't drop it though - the connectors easily break inside and leave you with a useless box. It's a shame the port wasn't reinforced a bit! But hey, it's alright for the price.
