It sounds like you are looking for reasons to get the WA7d. Just do it for the peace of mind. It sounds like you'd stress out if you didn't. Your attempt to rationalize the purchase is very funny :)
I never noticed any ground noise and I live in a 100 year old condo that doesn't have the cleanest electrical wiring. In fact, the awesomeness of the WA7 allows you to use the 3.5mm jack with IEMs. Unlike most powered headphone amps, the WA7 has a black background.
Yes, I mentioned that the WA7tp sounded slightly different from the Solid State Power Supply. I did not think it sounded better. I would have been somewhat unsatisfied with my purchase if I had kept it; however, the reason why I sold it was the large amount of desk space it took up. Let's just say I did not come close to recovering my costs on it. Surprise surprise... a custom power supply for a specific high-end amplifier has a very limited number of buyers.
I was hoping that they would include the Solid State Power Supply with the WA7tp + WA7 combo in this drop so I could get the WA7tp cheap on the secondary markets when people realized that they did not need it. That will not happen.
utdeeplol if you don't have anything with optical ports, you don't need it. the optical option is quite pricey. a lot of amplifiers in this price point just include in already. also note that with the optical option, you lose the ability to use this as a standalone dac. Though I have seen a youtube video of woo wa7 impressions at a meet by miceblue425 that stated he believes the O2+Odac had superior sound stage, imaging, and resolution, so I don't think that using this combo as just a standalone dac is really worth its price tag. You are paying for the combination, looks, and tube sound. All well designed amplifiers with low gain switch will have a black background with IEMs.
money4me247I am pretty sure that guy was paid off. The review is terrible, seems phony, and he is playing battlefield to do the review.. I mean, c'mon! And if you look at his original WA7 he admits he knows nothing about audio.
utdeepNo. Just looking to avoid buyer's remorse. I am going with stock WA7. Amazing piece at a great price. d upgrade is too much for what you get and I don't have immediate need for optical. TP would take up more space, reduce the beautiful simplicity of a single unit and, at best, not mess up the sound. So I am standing firm on WA7 alone. Hats off to Woo Audio for a stunning and high performance piece. Can't wait to get it.
jbrady3324I think you are looking at the wrong review. The review by barnacules nerdgasm who used battlefield to test his equipment & admits he knows nothing about audio is quite positive.
. The one I was referring to is the head-fi meet impressions by miceblue425. <
> He is very active in the head-fi community. Just his personal impressions. As always with personal impressions, ymmv.
Unlikely either review was paid off. hahah
D3DistractedI would agree with this. I think the most impressive thing about Woo Audio is their business model. When the WA7 came out, another company came out with a similar tube amp called the Pan Am for close to the same price. To get the most out of this tube amp, you had to buy better tubes, ridiculously priced cables, and all sorts of other stuff. In the end you had an amp that wasn't as good, couldn't be used with IEMs due to a hiss, and looked really silly.
The WA7 comes with the unstoppable Voshkod Tubes which I would argue are the best tubes for the amp. The DAC is pretty fantastic. With the glass and the design, it looks stunning. Pictures do not do it justice.
My only silly complaint is that you need to buy a $2 power cable and $2 USB cable to use it. For $1000 and over 90 days of waiting for the amp (back in the day), there was nothing more frustrating than realizing I needed to make a trip to radio shack before I could get it going.
