Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones
Product Description
The xDuoo TA03S Tube Headphone Amplifier is a little tube-supported powerhouse, perfect for pushing your high-end headphones to sing with warmth and detail. The XMOS U8 processor drives the unit with plenty of headroom for processing, which is good because there are two separate CS4398 DAC chips supporting up to 32-bit, 192-kilohertz decoding Read More
The TA-03S uses a 12AU7 electric tube as a preamplifier and two 6C19 tubes to expand the current for a mellow timbre. Along with a powerful NIPPON CHEMI-CON capacitor, the DAC/amp is driven by a low-noise E-type transformer that’s specially designed to drive tube amplifiers.
What utter gibberish.
what is 'expand the current'? Does that mean there is more space between the electrons so they don't get crowded?
The 'E-Type Transformer designed to drive tube amplifiers' but this is not a tube amplifier, its a preamp no?
Most transformers are either toroid or E type. A toroid would probably have been better in such a small enclosure.
And I don't understand what the magic of this capacitor is. Nearly every electronic device on earth has at least one capacitor. Usually several. Nippon Chemi make decent caps, but unless I am mistaken this is just a power supply cap. Not in the audio path.(transformer+capacitor, you are a few diodes away from a power supply) This is just slapping consumers in the face with terminology that sounds specific and fancy. But is essentially word salad.
CalaverasgrandeWow! You're gonna want to put your foot in your mouth dude.
1. Expand may translate as amplify since exand is a synonym of amplify.
2. Yes. You would need a tube type xformer. This is blatantly obvious unless you want to have multiple transformers in your power supply. How else are you going to get a heater voltage of 6.3v, 12.6v, and likely a couple hundred volts or more for the plates? Even if it was a toroidal xformer, it would still need to be wound specifically for tube amps.
3. A preamp is an amp so long as its an active one. Most preampliers amplify current and voltage, so those would technically be a power amplifier if you want to get particular. This amp is a preamplifier and a headphone amp, so you're doubly wrong.
4. Power supply caps, if that's what it is used for here, can make a massive difference in sound. Ask anyone who has listened to Black Gates NX electrolytic caps in a power supply. If it's being used a coupling cap, then it would definitely alter the sound one way or another. If so, enjoying cap rolling may be your new hobby instead of just tubes. I am not familiar with the cap advertised, but caps do make a massive difference. "Powerful" may be a way of stating that it is a high farad cap in the power supply. I'd have to know where the cap is being used to presume to know more than this.
5. I've built solid state amps with no caps thanks to Nelson Pass letting us build his F5 amp circuit. The amp has no caps. The power supply does, but that's not an amp now is it? Tube amps almost always have caps in the circuit, for the heater string if for nothing else. It's possible to eliminate a coupling cap, but most designs use one. You need to understand the the power supply is not technically part of an amplifier. You could use batteries if you wanted or have a remote power supply with an umbilical. If you're building a power supply to run off AC, then you'll undoubtedly want smoothing caps in your power supply. Even in this location, like I said previously, type and quality of cap will alter the sound.
The xduoo ta-03s tube dac/amp is LOADED with audiophile-grade features ... it comes with a HIGH-PERFORMANCE xmos U8 USB chip ... the DAC/amp is DRIVEN by a low-noise E-type transformer that’s specially designed to DRIVE tube amplifiers.
I finally figured out what this thing reminded me of:
Tube DAC/AMP? Very interesting. These tube amps are nice for the HD 6XX given the high impedance match, plus the fun factor of seeing the tubes light and glow :)
Hello everybody :-) , like some guys here i received my baby with a stick on it "AC IN 110v" but here in france we use 220V , as i saw it here it seems that there is not two different models, so do you think i can use it (with the EU plug of course) ?? many thanks for your answers , Sly .
sly44Drop sent me this 110V tube amp knowing it was destined for Australia (240 volt). The site did not identify it as 110V.
<snip> you Drop. Money grubbing and incompetent.
Mod Edit: Cleaned up language per Community Guidelines
sly44I received mine today and came to ask this. Anyway drop only said it would come with us plug and from what I've gathered I should be fine as long as I changed the cord. Apperantly not... We are scammed. Is it possible to change the input voltage from inside instead of using a voltage transformer?
This or a Schiit Magni / Modi 3 setup?
Edit: for a desktop setup with a MacBook Pro and the HD58X (maybe a 6XX later). I have a FiiO E12 for a portable amp
The Magni and Atom feel cheap compared to the Liquid Spark, and the spark has it's gain and power buttons on the front. Here's a good comparison covering everything from build to sound.

T4DealsSince I personally own the magni/modi 3 stack and both the Sennheiser hd 6xx and 58x, I'd say that if you want your stack to look all matchy then the schiit stack performs wonderfully. My only problem with it is that the magni 3 is too damn powerful for anything more sensitive than hd 6xx. On the 6xx I can barely get above a quarter of the volume dial and iems are impossible if I want to keep bit perfect output to the modi (yes I know 24 bit allows a ton of software attenuation). If I could do it again I'd either get the modi 3 or Grace sdac, and pair it with the JDS labs atom since the power output is both cleaner and more manageable.
