Maybe you were looking at the Yamaha HS8 studio monitor to complete your home setup, but you wouldn’t mind losing a little bit of the low-end response if it means dramatically reducing the size and weight of the speaker. Built with a 5-inch woofer and able to fit into nearly any home system, the Yamaha HS5 studio monitor brings you powerful performance that doesn’t take up the entire desk Read More
BE WARNED IF YOU JOINED THIS DROP -- JUST A NOTE OF INFORMATION:
THIS DROP IS NOT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND ARE NOT PURCHASED THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED YAMAHA DEALER. THE WARRANTY IS ***VOID*** IF PURCHASED THROUGH THIS DROP.
While Massdrop does have some drops coordinated with the Manufacturer (Sennheiser headphones for example) I have been in touch with Yamaha because
I joined and purchased the HS8's through a drop last year. I had a power supply fail in one of the monitors. After (6) weeks of trying to get someone to listen they had me ship the bad unit back and then after another three weeks informed me they couldn't replace them. As a professional Audio producer for Radio and TV I had to purchase another set from Sweetwater. (BTW Sweetwater came close to the price and they are fully warrantied)
Yamaha indicated Massdrop nor their "vendor" are authorized to sell Yamaha and they are attempting to find out the source of this purchase.
These are GREAT Near Field Mastering Monitors but BE ADVISED PURCHASING THROUGH MASSDROP ***VOIDS*** WARRANTY ELIGIBILITY.
I hope my misfortune can be a warning to others so my fellow audiofiles don't go through the hassle and expense that I had to go through.
Cheers.
som001Note: This drop includes one monitor in your choice of black or white. If you need two monitors for a stereo setup, you can add an additional monitor at checkout. Quantities are limited to 3 units in black and 25 units in white. Shipping is limited to the US.
I ordered these in White, I'm not seeing anything on my order that specifies that. Is there any way to confirmation that I'll be getting the white speakers and not the black?
I dabble with music production and these are undeniably great monitors. Hyper clarity and power. If it sounds good on these it’ll sound good elsewhere. I use the 8” so there’s never a need for a sub - not sure with the 5”. Very good for instruments, lead synths and vocals.
Lot's of folks don't understand the difference between studio monitors and bookshelf speakers.
Bookshelfs are meant to fill a room with sound. The frequency response and sound of bookshelf speakers is going to be somewhat ( or a lot) hyped. Imagine a graphic equalizer with the bass and treble bands pushed up, and midrange frequencies pulled down. This type of speaker sounds great on your pop music and dance music.
Studio monitors are meant to be flat, clean and clear. They are not designed to fill an entire room with sound. They are meant to be set up a few feet in front of the listener, and played at a moderate volume. In a way you can think of monitor speakers as headphones that sit out in front of you.
If you are sitting 3-4 feet directly in front of them, enough bass. Or at least enough to discern whether an instrument needs to be eq-ed.
CalaverasgrandeGREAT description of the difference in Near Field and Bookshelf - could not have explained it better...
JUST AN FYI
NOTE: I am a big Massdrop Fan and have and still purchase items through Massdrop. Also I own a pair of the YAMAHA HS8 purchased and these are FANTASTIC NEAR FIELD MONITORS IN MY OPINION.
HOWEVER - "B"E" W"A"R"N"E"D" -- MASSDROP AND THEIR VENDOR FOR YAMAHA MONITORS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO SELL YAMAHA. THE MANUFACTURER 3 YEAR PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY ON THESE MONITORS "I"S" "V"O"I"D" WITH A MASSDROP PROOF OF PURCHASE. I PURCHASED THE HS8 on the last drop and after about a year the power supply began to fail.
AGAIN - MASSDROP IS NOT AUTHORIZED to SELL YAMAHA. IT TOOK MASSDROP 6 WEEKS TO AUTHORIZE A RETURN. Because I was using these on an ongoing project I had to PURCHASE ANOTHER PAIR THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. With the time and effort the "Discount" I got through Massdrop which ended up being about $100.00 total COST ME $1,000 dollars in time and the second set.
Unless they explicitly state on the drop info that "comes with manufacturer warranty" (which some drops do) ASSUME THE MANUFACTURER WARRANT IS VOID.
Hope this helps those of you who are considering joining the drop. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY...Although I LOVE THE HS8...however I don't know what the reduction in woofer diameter will do to bass response. On the HS8 there is no need for a sub woofer. Great Monitors - just decide whether or not you are cool buying them and giving up the (3) Year Parts and Labor Warranty that you won't have.
Just had a quick question. Im trying to get a surround sound setup whether it will be 5.1, 7.1, whatever. I guess Im wondering if it would be odd to get 5/7 of these speakers..? Or 2 then the rest are from another brand? Im a noob obviously so, apologize for the confusion.
TremonsterI have to completely agree
I got mine, and ever since I have them hooked up to my dac/amp ...im just so happy to feel em thumpin.
I got the white ones too...so pretty
