Established in 1962 in Tokyo, Japan, Audio-Technica is known around the world for its lineup of headphones, microphones, and turntables. In the US, the company has gained particular acclaim for its classic M50X studio headphones, along with its audiophile-grade A and AD Series Read More
This is a pretty good deal on some awesome headphones with terrific imaging, although a bit lacking on bass. However, the AD900x is selling on Amazon for $104, a headphone that retails at MSRP for $300. That's the best deal in this line, at about 65% off. If on a budget, get the AD500x at $60. That's a great deal if treble is more preferable than bass. At about $70, the competition is the Philips SHP9500, with removable cable that can BoomPro, bass, and great comfort. The "wings" of the AD series headband is a bit overlooked in design. If seeking Audio-Technica sound in open backs with great treble, then go all out with the highest available model, they deliver. My two cents.
Depends on your taste. The SHP9500 is very lightweight and comfortable and can be worn for a long time by most people. Both can BoomPro, the Audio-Technicas cannot. Listening to six string guitar and violin on the Audio-Technicas is pretty sweet.
Josh has some insights. Although he gives too much kudos to Sennheiser for top end resolution due to having beaver ears. Sennheiser can't compare to Audio-Technica when it comes to top end resolution. That's one of Audio-Technica's strength and it has very little competition in that arena, you'd have to go for a pair of Focals or something to beat them in that. But I recommend watching both his videos.

JJDeviloperI have AD900x and I've worn it for 5 hours straight no problem. The most comfortable headphones I've ever tried, no competition here. Other headphones always put pressure either on the top of my head or on my ears (on ear models). This one - neither.
How's the comfort on these? The Sony headphones I've been wearing have been giving me a headache on the top of my head when I wear them for long periods of time.
Thanks man, that settles it then, I have the Hd58X, hd&xx and Hd600, and yes, 58X it's the more fun can between them, though my favorites are the 6XX, though 600 it's definitely a nice headphone and I'd be satisfied with a similar bass, but if it's less than that, I'll guess I'll look elsewhere, maybe the Fostex Ebony or something like that.
i prefer the HD 58x for hip hop metal and electronic music over the HD600.. HD600bi like better with Jazz besides certain jazz fusion songs i like 58x better.. thought it might just ve me but im really impressed with the 58x.. sounds great paired with my topping nx4 or lg v30.. such a great value
Yeah, I never heard the 1000x but I heard the treble was slightly smoother on the 2000x... I didn't find it sibilant either, I found it perfect.
I just need a headphone with Beyer bass, Senn mids, and AT highs ;-)
UzuzuFirst thoughts.........HD58X... But the highs are more like the SHP9500 than any headphone with decent highs. M1060 might be close small issues though in the highs where AT accell at. DT1990 would probably be a good compromise. But then again the HD660s Actually has the sennheiser Mids, AT Highs (kinda, they sound grainy at first but then you realise its not grainy after a while) Better imaging, Soundstage it has one, but not as big as like th e700x/900x. To lazy to grab my 2000x but i think from memory its similar size. It has bass, but its not bassy, its Quality bass to keep a more neutral sound but its enough that it sits just above neutral with a more lively sound. If you love the ATH-AD's but want bass you will love the HD660s (but not the price). HD58X doesnt sound like the HD660s! different sounding in many ways.
With a medium-large head, using the AD500x has been amazing for gaming, alright for music, and unbelievably comfortable over long sessions. Highly recommend the AD500x or similar ones above it if your head is decently large, I often forget I have these on over hours of use which has never happened to me with another headset. Positional tracking is outstanding, it's as though going from a "OK did he shoot from my left side or right?" to "OK that guy just shot from between my 2:15 and 2:30". Would highly recommend also increasing the bass slightly in an EQ preset if you are listening to music, but in gaming deep bass doesn't help awareness so I would keep it neutral. Going a step further if you are rather inclined in modding, you could transplant AD2000 drivers into the 500x shell, buying them from audio technica for I believe $45-55 per driver.
in the future im gonna buy hd800s and will need a closed set to compliment them. i prefer darker mid forward sound like 650s and found k7xxs a bit harsh and had to damp them with a couple ply of toilet paper (ordering a garage project horizon so that might tame them). ive heard "bright" used to describe a few of the headsets in this drop and i want to run away. but im still tempted. which of these would be considered the darkest?
Darling_in_the_PantsThere is no reason to be discontinued. Their new AD5000x does not come close to the AD2000x in its own rights. The god like imaging in a narrow space studio like environment and you are musician but hearing yourself playing.
So the description box has the AD1000X at $250, A1000Z at $250, and A2000Z at $400. The pictures at the bottom of the page have them at $260, $300, and $450 respectively. The buy page has them at $250, $280, and $400.
What are the prices actually supposed to be?
wiemerimerI'm sure the prices at checkout are the correct ones. I mean, that's what you'll be charged for. This is because prices vary between drops (and they usually go cheaper over time). I'm sure they just forgot to update the front page.
NEXONUSI've seen Massdrop go every which way when pricing isn't consistent. I've seen them put the price at the lowest point (which is always nice), and I've also seen them move the price at checkout up (I think they honored the sales up to the change).
