MSRP is $300 huh? I really wonder what kind of nerve do they have to put that BS up while Beyerdynamic's official NA online shop said $179 for MSRP: https://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/dt-990-pro.html Come on Drop... Come on...
I dunno about the spammers, but the semantic games from you in this thread sure were a waste of time. Enjoy overpaying for products on Drop, droplet!

GiantHeadphoneSquidI'm glad you spent the time on it, it must be an important issue to you, having gone through the thread and spending so, so, so much time on it. One person's semantics are another's accurate portrayal/representation. Ditto bronyboi, figured I'd just use some weird moniker for you since you've decided to do the same for myself.
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DT990Pro--beyerdynamic-dt-990-pro-250-ohm-open-back-studio-headphones artificially inflating the retail price to flatter your sale price is a garbage tactic.

I've seen the 250 ohm model under $120 on Amazon, brand new. For the 80 ohm model, this is a great price. I wish it came with a case like the drops for the Beyerdynamic Premiums but I don't see any info indicating that, unfortunately.
JJDeviloperThe Pro 250's tend to be the cheapest across the 770,880,990 line. Although the chrome 880 seems to be pretty cheap most times.

These are great headphones especially for composers. They can also be found at Sweetwater.com for $139.99 so you might want to check that out and save yourself 10$. You will however notice that even when you type in DT 990 80 Ohm you still get the 250 Ohm. How many of you are getting these because 80 Ohm impeadance? They don't even sell these 80 Ohm 990's on the Beyerdymamic website which leads me to believe that they no longer make these. If your audio source needs the slight boost a lower impedance provides then by all means get these while they're hot. If however you have a sufficient headphone amp ( which most receivers, mixing boards, consoles, headphone amps, and even headphone outs of a Macbook pro all do ) then you should consider the 250 Ohms as they sound better. Each time you cut the impedance by 1/2 your doubling the load on the amp which is what makes the 80 Ohm sound louder but unless you amp is stable at 125 or 80 Ohms then you could possible blow either the amp or the headphones if you're constantly listening at high volumes. You should check the user manual for both before buying these, at least that is what I would advise ( other than just getting the better sounding 250 Ohm version and turning up the volume a bit ).

You know, funny thing: these are the 80 ohm versions, crazy that they say this in the description. You can get 250 ohm versions elsewhere, if you wish. You can also get the non-pro DT 990 elsewhere if you so choose. Hell, you can get a 32, 250 or 600 ohm version even! These are 80 ohms though, either way. Coincidentally solid state amps will run them just fine. Most people use SS compared to tubes. Shocking, I know.

You have a valid point about different impedances. I did not know the price was higher for a low impedance version. I couldn't find the MSRPs on Beyerdynamic's website. Could you please point me to where you found different prices for various impedances?

Those of you commenting on Amazon comparison are incorrect! The Amazon quote is for the 250 ohm version of these headphones! This drop is for the 80 ohm version which are $25 more on Amazon. Please be accurate with comments like this...

petukcheleThe 80 Ohm are $179. Looking at camelcamelcamel these have actually never been less than $179 on Amazon since they were released this past November. I think you might be looking at the premium model or the 250 ohm possibly?

Some recommendations from a DT990 Premium owner...... First, be absolutely certain that you are ok with the strong treble. You won’t notice on most well recorded, audiophile material but any modern, compressed, recordings will make your ears bleed. These are super strong in the sibilant region. If you are sensitive to treble, move along. If you are prepared to deal with the treble or EQ out the 9k spike, these are actually very good headphones otherwise. They are very open, detailed and quite fast. The soundstage tends toward the three blob, left, center, right variety versus a cohesive front soundstage but, for the price, it is hard to complain about the other attributes. As any entry point to audiophile performance, these are a reasonable choice. The other consideration is pro versus premium options. The premium has a much lighter clamp force and is very comfortable for long sessions where the pro might be a little uncomfortable. If you dip your toes in to the audiophile headphone world here, you will eventually buy the HD6XX. It might be one month, two months or six months but eventually you will buy them. The other option is to skip these and go straight to the 6XX.

BennyMacI own the HD6XX and the 250 Ohm DT990's. I prefer the 990's on my Asgard 3, 6XX's are great on brighter gear. Asgard 3 takes the sharp edges off the 990's and propel them into a higher league imo.

Merv73Agreed. Both the 990's and 6XX can change (better or worse) based on gear. Part of the fun of going down this rabbit hole is experimentation. I own several pairs of cans in the $100 to $300 range and a couple in the $1,000 range. Hindsight is 20/20 but I could have saved a couple thousand bucks and stopped with the 990 and 6XX. Incremental improvement over these is very small. ...It is there, no doubt. But, improvements become much smaller after this point and won't be worth it to most people. As I write this, I realize that 'most people' are not the people reading these posts so many of you will spend much more money to figure this out!
