Known for their comfort and value, the Brainwavz memory foam ear pads are among the most frequently recommended replacements for the Audio-Technica M50X on Head-Fi and Reddit’s r/headphones. Each pair features high-grade memory foam wrapped in your choice of soft, plush velour or high-quality protein PU leather Read More
HEADS UPRemoving the thin layer of PU on Brainwavz pads reveals in a thinly-stitched cloth material surrounding the foam. Using the pads in this state produces shocking results. I would go so far as to say that this is one of the most important discoveries in headphone pad history. (And I say this with considerable experience in pad-swapping.)
Warm/dark/veiled headphones are brought to life. The perceived sound alterations compared to using velour pads: increased treble, detail, soundstage, and reduced upper bass/lower mids.
The trick is removing the PU. Fortunately, I had an old pair of pads and was able to flake-off the PU. Anyone have any thoughts on how to dissolve/remove the PU without harming the rest of the pad?
These Brainwavz ear pads fit much better than the ATH-M50x Velour Ear pads that I had paid for on Massdrop at a higher price. The ear space seem much larger than the ATH-M50x velour Ear pads. Less sound leakage too so there was a increase in the mids and bass tones over the velour ear pads. Now I regret getting the velour ear pads. The only complaint that I have about the protein PU leather is that it makes me sweat a bit more than the velour ear pads.
Finally got them today. They fit to MSR7 and are a lot bigger than the stock pads. Very well made, fits well, comfortable, same as expected.
However, as @tolis626 mentioned; the lows are missing. I'm not a basshead and using my MSR7 since its release. MSR7 is not popular because of its bass response though. Soundstage get a little wider, just a little bit. Don't expect too much.
Pros against stock pads: comfort, price, size
Cons against stock pads: bass response
I really can't even think about that :D Not only really creative but also brave! Needless to say, I'd think twice before even attempt. Great as usual, thanks a lot!
derzulyaWhy thank you sir for your kind words! :D
Don't be afraid, it's really easy. The only thing you have to be careful about is the wire. Pay attention to it and you'll be a-okay. And the improvement is worth it, IMO! Have fun!
Has anyone use the HM5 pads (the leather or pleather ones) with Audio Technica MSR7s? I'm looking to buy a pair but I've heard that they absolutely destroy the sound, elevating the already prevalent highs and obliterating the already lacking lows, although they do appear to add soundstage. But that's just what I've heard in forums. And feedback from you guys would be appreciated!
tolis626Same here. However I joined the drop (for Pleather) today after reading this article of Steve Guttenberg. My MSR 7 is now more than 2 years old and I need to replace the earpads. Sadly, I couldn't find any better option than this one.

I ignored everything I read and ordered these for my Massdrop/Sennheiser HD6XX anyway. I must recommend against it. They are super comfy, much more so than stock, but man, they make the HD6XX sound like crap. They will ruin all that is good about this headphone. Quite shocking to me, since I've used these pads with other head sets with great success.
I ordered these adapters: http://www.modhouseaudio.com/sennheiser-earpad-adapters/
You might be able to get them cheaper, or even print them yourself if you have a 3-D printer, but I was very pleased with the price and speed of shipment from modhouse audio.
dman59847Just a heads-up: Amazon regularly has Lightning Deals for Brainwavz pads. In fact, a few days after the latest drop ended, Amazon had the velour pads for $17.10 -- less than Massdrop's price ($17.99). Amazon's shipping would have taken 2-5 days... not 4-5 weeks for Massdrop's order to arrive on the slow boat from China.
Clearly, Brainwavz gave Massdrop dibs and then had Amazon lower the price for their velour pads to further boost sales. I see what you did there, Brainwavz. So in the future, I will pass on Brainwavz pad 'deals' from Massdrop and just wait for Lightning Deals on Amazon.
I HIGHLY recommend the pleather pads as an upgrade for the ATH-M50x. Dramatically increases comfort and low-end/sound stage. Skip the velours unless you plan on EQ'ing. They almost completely remove the bass.
