I also had the waist belt buckle break this past week on the Knobstone Trail in Southern Indiana. Bought the pack last year and used it on the AT in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Any chance of getting a replacement buckle for the 1 1/2" waist belt? Thanks.
I've had two of these bags now ( one I had replaced for the hip belt bucket breaking.) The second bag now did the same thing. Am I doing something wrong? Should these buckles be that easy to break? I think I need to get them replaced by metal ones of some sort. Does anyone have a suggestion of a sturdy buckle that I can use?
PhisshionSorry to hear about the buckle breaking. We have had a few reports like that, which is odd because the buckles are from Duraflex who are arguably the most respected name in buckles. It seems like they are slightly brittle or something and can break.
We are switching out the buckle for next year to something more durable. If you'd like to switch yours you can get in touch again for warranty, or swap on any 1.5" buckle. It's not normal for a buckle to break, so likely you'd have better results with a different 1.5" buckle. A quick way to do that would be to grab a 1.5" buckle from an online shop like Quest Outfitters for $1 - $2 and sew that on:

I'm looking at this pack. I'm 21" torso and 30 "
waist. I'm thinking M/L . I have always had a hard time getting the hip belt tight enough.
So how small does the hip belt go ?
Thanks ,Bill
In future revisions, I would like to see the body of the pack to be shorter and wider. The biggest reason is to allow easier access for a bear canister. A BV 450 will just fit, but it’s a pretty tight squeeze. A canister is required in many of the places I like to hike and I just use it now as part of my setup anywhere I expect to see black bears. Bigger sternum strap pockets would definitely be a plus in my book too.
I order a DD Drop 40L Pack back on February 20th, it shipped on the 23rd and arrived March 5th but they sent a S/M instead of an M/L so I sent it back and they sent a new pack. That one came on the 17th and... they sent the wrong size again. How do you send the wrong size twice? I don't understand. It seems like if someone was sent the wrong size you would check a little closer to make sure you were sending the right size. Anyways it happened and now that they have moved all of their outdoor products to Amazon they don't have any stock to send me the right size. They offered to let me keep the product and give me a $25 coupon to drop, keep the pack and a $20 partial refund, or send it back for a full refund. I know there is stock on Amazon but it's $10 more expensive, I'm right on the cusp of the pack being big enough, and it's now been a full month since I tried to order the pack. I guess I should have just ordered a cottage pack that I knew would fit and I could be halfway through the lead time now. I don't actually have much to say, I just wanted to share my frustrations with drop and say that I am excited that the Dan Durston products are starting to move towards somewhere they will get more love.
JkdraegeNo. I don't think there is a way. You'd have to find something on Drop to use them for, which I know is pretty limited if you're into the outdoors. Maybe a knife or some earbuds.
I’m a 17” torso and I’ve tried both pack sizes. I prefer the M/L because I still get some back travel and the lifters are higher. But I’m having a problem that when I tension the lifters it pulls the straps up on the outside and becomes uncomfortable by the neck. Release the lifters and the straps go back to laying mostly flat. Anything I’m doing wrong or is this a sign that the pack doesn’t fit me? I have experimented with all kinds of chest/shoulder/load lifter tension.
pnwruddymanWhat happened with the load lifters when you tried the smaller size? Always hard to say without seeing things in person, but maybe you are slightly below the size range for the M/L so the load lifter are pulling up too much? The majority of the packs in this niche don't have load lifters - you could try using them less?
I bought this pack s/m size. I love it in terms of quality, weight, simplicity. However, I can't seem to dial it in and I think it has to do with shoulder straps distance @ 10" outer edge to outer edge and length of straps. I have the straps cinched down to the end. Do you think I just need a smaller pack than the small/med and therefore out of luck. I'm 5'3 with a 16-17" torso. The top of the straps bunch up high because they are too far off the side of my shoulder and if I cinch in the load lifters it just gets bunched up. Any recommendations on mods? Also does anyone have pics of foam pad between frame and back...mine does not look 8mm?
Thanks :)
jane_doeIt sounds like the S/M would be the better fit. It would be unusual for the M/L to be the better size for a 5’3” hiker. And the S/M does work up to a 17” torso.
dandurstonAwesome. Thank you. I think I just need to get comfortable with it. I love everything about it...even the external pocket that seems to be the conversation. Thanks again. Love your work & Tara's. Cheers!
