Well, it’s a different frequency balance. Also, the HD 800’s ring drivers are so large that they present a practically planar wavefront to the ear, so they will always be different that way. I think the HD 800(S) design and Sennheiser’s proprietary in-house fabrication results in drivers that are extremely resistant to wobbling during the vibrational piston-like movement that creates sound. That said, the sample I heard has really good left-right channel matching. That does a LOT for expanding the soundstage, creating focused directional imaging. Each driver is competently manufactured, and I suppose the tolerances for acceptable drivers are pretty tight, so I’m hearing quality that’s much closer to the HD 800(S) than price would suggest. When I got my HD 660S, I thought “this is a great midway point between the HD 650 and the HD 800.” It seemed crisper and sharper than the HD 650, though it’s warmth (and flat driver angle) still kept it from having the imaging to point out a direction in gaming as in clear, sharp focus as the HD 800. That’s not a trade-off the OAE1 is making, to my ears. It’s got MORE sub bass and bass than the HD 800 or HD 600 series, and yet imaging and soundstage is still focused and able to reach deep. It’s much more difficult to find examples where the HD 800(S) still pulls ahead… I put one in the comments section below my review, but I really had to go looking for it. Im excited to see how much I can scale up the OAE1. I just received a Chord Mojo 2, which is probably one of the most revealing DACs I can afford right now, and I’m even contemplating a pure silver cable upgrade after I save up a bit (the stock cables are already pretty good silver-plated copper, and decent gauge thickness underneath the insulation).
