Okay since I've been waiting and haven't got any real feedback regarding Lawton mod, so I've decided to jump the gun and try it myself.
I only got the tune up kit so only driver dampening and cup dampening. I used Dekoni pad that I got from another drop since Lawton pads are too expensive. Also did not purchase Lawton wood cup.
Your mileage may vary. Since any of the above will change how it sound. But in my case I liked the new signature, you might or might not.
It improved details and tighten the bass but at the same time you get less bass (quality over quantity). Also no matter what cup you use it will make it sound like "Lawton Cup" instead of whatever signature your cup originally had (cup dampening overwrites the cup properties).
If you use it on Teak cup it will make it sound more like TH-X00 Mahogany's signature (except more treble and vocal and less bass) so be warned.
For me which was fine since I didn't like the female vocal recessed signature from Teak and was hoping for a bit more treble, so I end up experimenting and liking this new sound. I would say Lawton mod made it more dynamic sounding (lack of better word, but it basically bring up treble and vocal, and tightens bass so overall it sounds "punchier") at the cost of reducing bass quantity (even though quality went up).
I also had to "mod the mod" by cutting a hole in the middle of the foam to get the right level of balance for me. More foam = more treble and vocal, less bass. Less foam = punchier bass. I also tried taking out the foam completely and it didn't sound good, so you need a little bit. Be warned that this is non-reversible because you're cutting into the foam so if you do plan to go head do it in small increments.

So would I recommend it? Well it depends on what you like. At the moment I have stock TH-X00 and E-Mu Teak with Lawton dampening applied. I like both for different things (was planning to sell one but might end up keeping both).
If you currently don't dislike any aspect of the headphone I'd recommend not touching it. It changes quite a lot of things so you might or might not like the change. If you already like your Teak then DO NOT TOUCH IT. The resulting sound is quite different than the stock Teak sound.
I think for me I liked the TH-X00 side of sound signature a bit more so this end up working for me (since the mod sort of bring it closer to that side of sound).
Let me know if you any other questions. :)
Damn it I joined Sheepskin last time and forgot to switch my order to Elite Hybrid before drop end. So I end up getting Sheepskin and like you said it just seems a bit unnatural sounding. I guess I'll wait till next drop to get the Elite Hybrid.
In the mean time could you comment on if there's any effect on soundstage? I didn't notice too much difference in Sheepskin but Protein Leather (got from previous drop) actually improved soundstage by quite a bit surprisingly.
Was able to get the replacement cable. What a relief. The original cable is such inconvenience. So gad to get rid of it. Never again buying headphones with fixed cables.
Cool Thanks. yea i might wait and see the pricing. i also wouldn't mind getting one with official plugs, just hope it stays together better than the original one. I'm also a little skeptical about the OCC, Pcocc and 8 core cables like the one you linked, if they're really any better. I'm sure Chans OFC cable would be fine
OMEGA246I actually bought one of those from ebay and it's great. I found the after market plugs better than the ones came with the headphone. The aftermarket ones just clicked better, and overall the cable from ebay
brought out the mid quite a bit and I like the overall sound a lot more than the black original cable. I hope the new offering from Chan is sth similar.
The cable currently pictured looks amazing. Can anyone confirm that is indeed the cable that comes with these? As opposed to the black almost nylon cable of the other Fostex cans?
Are these comparable to the fostex th-x00's? Specifically the ebony version, as I was thinking of getting those and they're very similarly priced. Mainly wanted a headphone with good bass quantity, impact, and accuracy
Fuck!!!!!! I missed it too😡😡😡 I set an alarm and all😰. It said 4 hours left I got fucked I figured it was a full 4 hours it was most likely right about to switch over to 3 hours😡😰😡 I fucking hate when this shit happeneds they lose money and I habe to wait months till they come back out. MASSDROP ON YOUR NEXT UPDATE WHEN IT GETS TO SINGLE DIGIT HOURS CAN YOU PLEASE SAY THE REAL TIME (hours and minutes) LEFT UNTIL IT ENDS. I have missed as many drops as I have bought for this reason. I have said nothing but complements thus far and love MASSDROP. I'm not a member who complains about stupid shit everyday, but I feel that this would be really helpful for the next update and you would not lose out on money (at least with me missing drops.)
Actually my nr1 phones for all since half a year ;) EDIT: This means I prefer the most and love them more than my HD650, Nighthawks, Ah-D7200, HE-4xx and even some more planars like Aeon closed and Audeze Lcd-c. Fenomenal good Fostex driver, nice build quality and look.
The LCD2c is a very good phone and deserves a more closer listenening as I did. The highs of the Audeze are rolled off remarkably in comparision. Mids are a touch more foreward or more present. Soundstage is wider.
This could be a nice alternative phone besides the E-MU for me in case I look for a second phone or a planar.
Meanwhile I sold all of my other phones (HE4xx, HD650, K702, Nighthawk etc.), I really dont want more than 1 phone anymore( or max. 2 ...lol ...and the LCD2c could be this one)
austriandudelol yeah I gotta sell off my extra headphones too, I really only use 1 or maybe 2 max. I really want to try LCD-2 Classic though I also enjoy my treble sparks, so I wonder if LCD-2 Fazor or LCD-X would suit better. Maybe one day I'll try ZMF Eikon, one can only dream. :D
Jump on this if you can afford them, guys. They're fantastic headphones. Great soundstage for being semi-open/closed. Brilliant when paired with the Grace m9xx (or m900).
Dunno man. The teaks aren't even all the bassy. They have the least bass of any of the fostex X00 family and were tuned for balance... There isn't great layering as the separation is just above average... I don't know. I really can't believe anyone would say the teaks have much quantity of bass. I mean it's just a bit more than neutral and most moderately coherent closed sets have that quantity at least. The headphone just doesn't sound coherent enough for me though with it's sharp highs and slightly recessed midrange. But I'm into mid-centric headphones for the most part (that still do bass), or headphones that are neutral with extreme detail. For example I like the Ether Cs despite their midrange and believe me they are in every way superior to the teaks... but I can't deal with the weight.
Please somebody buy my teaks, I'll even clean mod 2.5mm japanese disconnects on them for extra

chan_emuPlease could you tell me how the cups fix to the headphone frame? Do the screws go into pre-drilled pilot holes in the bare wood of the cup, or do they screw into metal threaded sockets?
I basically want to know whether the cups can be swapped many times. For example, Lawton Audio says that its own wood cups must not be swapped many times because the screws go into bare wood, and with multiple swaps the pilot holes eventually get stripped by the screws (and the cups can't be fixed to the headphones any more).
ZeosPanteraThanks Z, I'd love to buy the Teaks but I already own the X00 PH, I can't justify to drop another 500$ on almost the same headphones, the cable doesn't really bother me tbh.
