They don't sound as good as the ER2SE but because of the inline mic and controls it is easier to deal with on a commute than the ER series. Isolation and cable are fine same as any other etymotic barrel style earphones.
I would recommend them if you get them under $60
I have owned the HF5 Etymotic -- the same IEM without the cellphone controls -- for 5 years. Their sound is free of distortion, and they have a flat frequency response EXCEPT for the bass, which is softer than most other earphones. The only negative about the sound is: the fit is critical! They arrived with 3 sets of assorted ear-pads and all are size Small. I needed a size Large, which I ordered directly from Etymotic.
The sound improved dramatically! (When I received my HF5 IEMs, included were 6 sets of ear-pads, 3 Small and 3 Large.). Also, this ER23-HF3 originally retailed for $175, so the current price is an absolute bargain!
This is my first try on audiophile grade IEM. it’s heavy on treble higher frequency. Damped lower frequency. Vocals seem flat. Played Bryan adams - the entire fidelity was lost.
unfortunately my wife discarded the packing. So cannot even return it. Perhaps will give it to my 7 yr old - etymotic have fantastic ear plugs which fit tiny ears very welll. Even my Panasonic 10 buck earbuds sound better.
HF3 are almost axactly the same as the timeless classic ER4P... With bass extension being even better. Some might that they sound dull and lack sparkle in the low/mid trebles. But it can be fixed by adding a 100 Ohm resistor. It really is a default less IEM to my ears. Construction wise I could blame the cable but honestly it's not that big of a deal. Fit is typical etymotic with the isolation that comes with it.
(OOC note: I wanted ti buy a seconde pair, and I had no choices other than massdrop as I live in europe. Sadly I did not recieve it, put Drop service was great and I have been paid back... Kudos!)
