I have the FiiO X5 III and ordered the FIIO X1 II for more portable use. The X1 is much smaller. I wasn't disappointed. It doesn't have the X5's manual volume and skip controls that allow me to make adjustments without looking, but its smaller size and lighter weight plus workarounds make up for the lack. It plays all of my music in various specs.
I load songs in folders on a micro-SD on my Windows PC, plug the card into the X1, and the folders show up. Run my fingertip along the circular pad on the front to move between folders. Click the large center button to make my selection. The folder opens up, and the songs play in the random (shuffled) order that I prefer.
Press and hold the button on the top left side to turn on or off. Press this same button to awaken the screen after it goes to sleep. When the screen is off while playing, press the top portion of the rocker bar on the left (just below the on/off button) to skip a song. Keep it depressed until the current song stops. When the screen is on, clicking that same spot will raise the volume. Volume level will be shown onscreen. When the screen is on, press the lower right front button to skip songs.
I can make adjustments while walking for exercise. I click and hold the top side of the rocker button to skip songs. To adjust volume, I click the on/off button and click the rocker button.
The X1 comes with a clear plastic protecter case that leaves the entire front open. The entire unit feels good and solid in my hand. Beautifully engineered, like the X5. I use it primarily with my Grado SR60 and SR80E. The sound quality (SQ) is excellent, accurately delivering the music as recorded. The quality of one's headphones matters. As with the X5, I haven't found a need for additional amplification.
Re the need to turn the screen on to make adjustments -- at first, I thought this was a drawback. But after working with this system, I realize that it was a sound engineering decision. The X1 doesn't respond to random, accidental presses of manual controls. A good thing ssince I use it during exercise. I handle it a lot, keeping it in my hand while walking and sticking it in my pocket every once in a while. The music continues without interruption. When I want to make adjustments, I click the left top side button to turn on the screen and make volume & play changes without looking.
I also thought the lack of touchscreen was a shortcoming, but, again, I think it was a good engineering decision. Random accidental touches on the screen during exercise don't affect play. In short, the X1 is made to order for active users. Simple and intuitive in design. Powerful with excellent SQ.
For the price, this is a bargain.
I had one of these already, I bought this one as a backup since the other one was acting up from the glass around the buttons had been broken from multiple drops on concrete at work. It was over 5 years old and was used every day at work, also in the car and at home. Fiio released firmware updates that always made ease of use better. This X1 II comes with the latest update. One really nice things they changed is the screen protector covers all of the glass front instead of just the display area. If there is one thing I advise you do for this product it's to use the fastest sd card you can. I'm using a Samsung 256gb Evo + U3. My only real complaint is the bluetooth range is pathetic. I lose the connection around 4ft.
