Got mine today from that other place that I ordered from (not sure if I can say here from where) and did a quick listening test with AKG 7xx. Drives them easily at about eleven o'clock on the volume. More than that and it's getting loud for my taste. Could only compare the DAC-X6 with FiiO A3 (using it on my phone) and FiiO E10K and to be honest, worth the cheaper price in comparison with the E10K. Does wonderful job with the sound, works without any issues and is well built. Just plug and play with the default windows drivers (connected through usb).

BUT, you have to understand I like my LOUDNESS IN THE "EAR-BLEEDING" RANGE !!! AND just a question if I'm not out of LINE !!! I'm getting the DAC- X6 on MASSDROP even through I've been offered a Price lower !!! I thought the purpose of MASSDROP was to Form Groups to get good prices for all of the Buyers and not just for a GREAT PRICE for just a FEW ???

I would expect that an RCA output is probably a DAC output (pre-amp output/pre-out), not an amp output. As such it would be very normal for the volume knob not to affect the pre-out. This is also how the O2/ODAC behaves as well as most receiver units for example.
Conceptually what's going on here is that it's literally a way to tap the output that would have been fed to the amp stage. You don't make the sound quieter by attenuating a signal BEFORE feeding it to the amp, you reduce the gain of the amp. So not reducing volume on the pre-out is working as expected here.

Looks as if the OPA2134 is socketed, so if you're fond of opamp rolling (like I am), it should be possible to replace it with an OPA2107, a MUSES02, or any other dual-channel DIP8 15-20V opamp of your choice.

AndyTomCan i use ne5532 instead of the stock? I feel like the stock op amp has very narrow soundstage and feels congested. I don't know how to see the compatibility though.

AndyTomAlright, here's the results of my little experiment with DAC-X6. I changed the stock OP2134 to NE5532. I didn't like the sound, low end got slightly fatter and the sound got less congested than the OP2134 but something was missing and i guess it was the burr-brown house sound. So i came up with OP2604 BB chip from eBay. I Don't even know if its an original chip but i used it. It changed the sound in a good way (The way i like), It is everything that OP2134 was with better bass, the biggest advantage was the sound-stage, it has gotten wider making things much more airier. I guess i will stick with this for a while until i come across something else. I love the laid back, warm, mellow non-fatiguing sound signature of the OP2604.

How would this do driving the hifiman he4xx? Not sure if the planars will need more power.

ghostnebulaNo worries! I can even add a little bit since that post was almost 2 years ago by now. I tried some more headphones and amplifiers, up to Sundara's and I tried the Atom setup and some others around these pricepoints.
I ended up with the FX-Audio DAC-X6 with a pair of Drop HE-X4's with the cable replaced with a braided Openheart cable from Aliexpress I paid 11 euro's for. I'm super happy with this setup, the sound as how I remember it is not far off the Sundara's and the amps I couldn't tell apart if my life depended on it. They're very clear, wide enough, fast sounding, the bass is well extended and is textured, the highs are not sibilant, the mids as lush, I can tell instruments apart etc. The only small point of critique is that the cable has some brass in it while I prefer it to be completely black.
I still don't consider myself an expert or maybe true audiophile, but I am as passionate about music as I ever was and this setup gets me "there" every time without having me wish for more. And it's relatively budget friendly so I can spend more money on other things I enjoy ;)

OrrozWow, you have more patience than I. They will refund/bring to a resolution if you contact them.
Funnily enough, mine arrived last Monday & in surprisingly good condition (packaging/still unopened) considering how long it had been in transit.
I've mailed Massdrop to inform them it arrived but, I have yet to hear back. I've also since purchased the SMSL200.
You may receive yours any day now - here's hoping.

theonetubyI do like the amp however, I ran into a problem last night. I don't know if it's the USB was the issue or what but I restarted my computer and the green light went out (not the power light the selector light) and I rearranged my USBs and it worked again. I tried an "amp stress test" and tried to drive various speakers. None of which were loud enough mind you they were speakers with large magnets(car speakers as a stress test and my current desk speakers. Neither worked well). If you are looking for a headphone only amp, as stated in the video, this amp is great.

DAC just arrived today. I'm confused at what's going on. I connected the USB cable to my MacBook pro 2015 and Seinheiser 58x Jubilee with the 6.35 adapter. Even at Max volume it barely produces any sound, but if I use the jack it sounds quite loud.

kiddWorks fine on a MacBook Pro 13 driving a 250 ohm DT770. I did change the switch jumpers to high gain. 12 o clock on volume is too loud for me. I made sure in OSX that the dac fx 6 is selected as the sound output.

Bought one a year ago, good sunding Dac and a powerful headphone amp which can easily drive a HD6XX even on low gain. The amp while powerful is not the best sounding and you can get better results hooking it to another amp. Doubt if anyone could hear the difference between this and DACs costing 3-4 times the price. Price is good.

I just switched to high-gain mode as well. Move the pins to the inner side towards the center on each side.

Use HD6XX plus others and found low gain sufficient. Tried hi gain but it did not improve improves quality only quantity which became too much for good control on my more senstive phones so went back to low gain and quite happy. Also swapped the op amp which I thought helped the sound become more natural, but may just be fooling myself. :)
