I agree. Have you tried a Colorfly C3? The UI is barely decent, but the battery life is good and the audio quality is excellent! 😀

So true. In my experience, having a dedicated portable audio player seems to provide a more detached, more enjoyable musical experience. It's one more thing to carry, but for me, I seem to have a better time when untethered from my phone.

Anyone actually own one of these and care to comment? The actual user reviews (what little there are) around the net make this product sound like its got some issues that HiFiMan isnt working out. That and it really does seem like HiFiMan is just dumping crappy products on MassDrop and paying SlickDeals to promote them to clear them out?

Thanks for the reply! I had read about the hiss issue with this unit as well as a number of firmware issues too. Seems to me its something worth passing on. I just upgraded to a 256GB iPhone 8 so Im thinking Ill work with that for a bit.

ben_r_Stick to that iphone! I don't think it's worth trading all that convenience for a teeny tiny improvement in sound you only notice in side by side comparisons.

What kind of DAC chip is in this guy, how does it compare to the FiiO guys?

Read some reviews before popping for this one. Looks like Hifiman has taken to using Massdrop to dump the crappy products it can't otherwise sell.

is this drop worth it or could I easily find better?

I doubt you'd need an amp. This thing gets loud. LOUD. LOUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDD.
I would NOT recommend buying it, however. Just has way too many drawbacks. Sometimes feels like it doesn't want me to use it.

How do you lock the device to avoid accidental button presses? And how is the device unlocked?

that's a damn good question. my impression of daps is that they're just a practical joke. An experiment to find out how much bs (=pointless inconveniences) buyers are willing to deal with before they just switch back to using a phone.

For some of us the idea of hauling around our $900 heavy smartphone while trying to work out, etc. doesn't make a lot of sense. These small DAP are light, have clips and (hopefully) tactile controls.

A dedicated DAP needs to at least be as good as an average phone or there's no use having it. Numbered list of what I'd need to know before considering this. Update: Just watched a couple YouTube reviews: 1. How much internal storage does this have without an SD chip? (None. And no SD memory chip supplied) 2.Does it handle .wma and .aac audio book files, (YES) and does it have bookmarking for audio books? (I don'think this is designed for audio books, although they'd play) 3. Is there a clip on the back for securing to clothing? (No, and the edges are sharp. Not so good for jogging or taking to the gym) 4. A "massive audio library" requires folders, a search feature, and favorites--how intuitive are these features, assuming the player has these? (These features look ok, reviews didn't comment on ease of use or any irritating features that crop up in actual use) 5. Does the player allow two tracks to be played at the same time, such as a music track while a downloaded podcast is also playing? (Don't know) 6. Does it support Opus audio? (?) 7. When connected to a PC, can you manipulate files easily? (The reviews assumed so but didn't demonstrate stuff like trying to load several dozen tracks, or folders of tracks, from a PC. Like, does it retain folders and do you just slide them over from your PC? Can you batch transfer a "music" folder with two dozen sub-folders and 200 songs?)

withiniswithoutExcellent compilation :-)
Would you make this a numbered list? Also, please add my question as well - does it support Opus audio?
The reason for asking: Opus supports high fidelity audio at miniscule sizes. Players like Poweramp (v3.xx) support playback of these files on my Android phone. For the claim contestants, I've signed up for the beta versions on Google Play.
-- Update -- It does handle .wma and .aac files. Hope that helps.

withiniswithoutRegarding Questions 4 and 7.
There is no search function to speak of. Your player uses the folder layout of whatever files you throw on it, so if you want to carry around a gigantic library don't throw everything into the same folder. So yes, if you throw your "music" folder with all your genres artists and albums onto the megamini (that really just shows up as a usb stick), it will retain that information.
However, there is NO search feature and I have yet to figure out how the "favourites" function works. I doubt this will work for a large library. Simply scrolling through your songs would take an eternity.
Regarding question 5.
No. The megamini's whole appeal is that it is impressively stupid. Some people are really into having as simple a device as possible. Don't expect it to have any fancy or smart features.
Regarding question 2.
I answered this bit in a discussion above. The player remembers where you left off if you turn off the device or if the battery dies. But if you skip tracks it forgets were you where on the previous track. This means that you'd have to fast forward back to the 40 minute mark you were at before you accidentally skipped the track.
This player is pretty hit and miss in my opinion. Good is the design which I think is pretty handsome. Sound quality is really nice too, as is the output power. Not ideal for really sensitive iems or headphones, but harder to drive stuff matches up really well. Cons? All related to the software imo. It's laggy and slow, lacking features, and laid out in a nonsensical manner. Updates have improved the speed (thank god because stock firmware is embarrassingly sluggish) but not much in the way of added functionality. Like the overview blub says, it's a simple player. If sound quality, price and looks are key components and you aren't particularly bothered by a weak ui, it's worth a look. Battery life is decent too.

Anyone know if this device does okay with podcasts and audio books? Curious if it holds the spot where you last leave off.

Thanks so much, @jasdfhg. The programming sounds eerily similar to the cheapo AGPTek mp3 player I've been using for the last few years. Fast-forwarding is hell... and it only remembers your place if you power off, not if you skip to another track. I bought the AGPTek player to replace my Sansa device which eventually died after several years. Buying a new Sansa device seemed absurdly expensive compared to other offerings. In retrospect it was a big mistake. On top of the frustrating interface issues, the AGPTek is failing in the same way the Sansa eventually did... the soldering for the headphone jack is beginning to break down and I'm losing sound in one ear from time to time. It's only a matter of time before it's unlistenable, so I'm in the market again. I was hoping this Hifiman Megamini DAP would fit the bill... by most accounts it sounds like a robust little unit. But if using it is a pain then it's pointless to consider it. And I'm not seeing any custom firmwares out there that could sort it out. :(
Thanks again for addressing the issues though! Very helpful
