Has anyone directly compared this to the Kelty Cosmic 20? Seems like they're both around the same price +/- a few bucks and the Kelty sets a solid standard for a lot of bag at the price point.
brewmeisterMy friend bought the Kelty Cosmic 20, we went camping recently and tried swapping bags, overall very similar.
I prefer the stretch baffles on the Klymit because I move around a lot in my sleep, there's a flap with a drawcord that tightens around the top of the torso/neck line to keep the heat in even while moving around.
The Kelty felt just as warm and didn't seem to shed as much down, though it did feel more restricting to me but that's because I move around a lot. My friend kinda prefers the Kelty because he feels like the stretch of the Klymit lets out too much heat but I don't think he knew how to use the drawcord flap to seal it. I will mention that he's had to send his in to get fixed as the zipper got stuck and broke, it took them almost a month for them to fix it and send it back.
brewmeisterI own a kelty 20 and a klymit 20. I believe klymit is a tad heavier, but it is humerous how much more lofty and stuffed it is. I consider the Kelty more of a 30 + degree bag while I take the klymit my cold weather bag. The baffles are awesome and it keeps its loft. INO, a much better bag than the Kelty. MUCH better.
Just got both bags in today!
Overall, I'm very happy with the quality. Great features and the stretch baffles make it really comfy, especially for side sleepers!
Not really a complaint but I was surprised at just how WIDE the "Oversized" bag is! I'm 6ft 220lbs and fit great in the standard bag. If I could swap out the oversized bag for a standard I would!
Also, was surprised to find that Costco is now selling these at $119 also! Wish Massdrop could have offered a lower price but oh well!

ZionHikes1 - interested in using this in a hammock. does it work ok as a Top Quilt? does it open wide enough to lay over or do you feel you need it zipped to be fully covered? I see that you left it partially unzipped underneath...
papillonOn the 2nd weekend of use mentioned above I did just that - it was my top quilt. I just unzipped it and spread it out over me (plenty of room) and also had an ENO bottom quilt designed for that purpose. We're all individuals, but this is my go to, especially in the conditions I've mentioned. As it gets colder, I'll learn more.
Perfect, thank you!
No idea why most gear companies that i see don't offer scale images from their showcase images. I wasn't even considering buying this until i knew that it was going to be a good quality/liter ratio. Same for my tent, spent an hour comparing sizes of the packed items before i made my decision.
I also have a message for Massdrop:
In the interest of fairness to those that might not otherwise know what a 20 degree bag looks like... this ain't one. Hate to be negative, so I'll say that its a real good deal for a 40 degree bag. Compare this one to the 600 down fill Sierra Designs bag also on this site rated to 28 degrees. Klymit might have an oz or so less in materials weight, offset by the 600 down fill weight of the SD. So, if you hold everything equal, the Klymit bag has about 10oz less down in it. That's a lot.
scopeLooks like it to me too. How is that temperature rating worked out? I'm used to seeing a 3 temperature scale like +12, +5, -5 degrees C, which means something like comfortable, bearable and extreme. So when a single temperature is stated what does that mean? I would find it very hard to believe this skimpy looking bag would be comfortable down to -5C.
scopeI watched a review on youtube and the guy said he slept in this exact bag at 28°F and was comfy. I plan to test it at near that same temp so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
nswensonThere are bands in the bag that make it super stretchy and mean you can sprawl out in the bag if you want. If she's small it's mould to her. Vcomfy
I'm 6' 5" tall. Will my height be an issue for this bag? The description says that it can shorten 15" to accommodate a 5' 3" person, and 5' 3" + 15" == 6' 6", so is it reasonable to assume I'll be fine?
ZenonYou'll be fine. I'm 6' 6.5" and 245lbs and I have plenty of room. See my comment from 50w ago for a picture of me all zipped up in it. In that pic I was about 265-270lbs and comfortable.
Cheers mate.
I dunno if it's 20 deg or not.. but from a design perspective.. the elastic ribs are a bad thing. Down works because it's fluffy. If you compress it, you lose loft, and when you lose loft, you lose insulation. It's why you need a pad in the cold because the bottom compresses and loses insulation. The ribs on this bag.. seem like they would reduce the loft and make you colder.
waltpackerYou're logic is solid, but functionally it doesn't quite work out that way. First of all, the elastic keeps the bag close soi there's less dead space to fill with your body's warm air. Second, the down lofts just fine in the space it's given. I'm not quite sure how to articulate that, but basically it's compressing the down (slightly) horizontally, not vertically. So the loft may even be greater when it's compressed because of the extra down pushing against the fabric.
