It's great to have a solid headlamp with adjustable brightness. I like that it comes with a battery but I did find that it doesn't seem to work with flat top cells lacking a button so if you want to be able to swap cells make sure you get a button top.

Very well engineered and has exceptional light output
I have opted to move to the 18650 battery line for all future battery operated devices and this headlamp is an excellent replacement for my AA battery headlamp and a slight bit lighter. It is a little heavy to be used for ultralight backpacking, but will suffice on short winter trips where the nights are long. It is great for around the house/farm everyday use.

A solid light but not enough distance illumination for skiing, running on single track, or navigating in the mountains. A little more of a thrower would be better for me (and thus, get all five stars). I thought that with a separate reading light, the main light would be more focused than the HC60. For a single button, the user interface is quite reasonable, not too complicated. The only other complaint is that the USB port cover could be easily lost during charging. They should do something to retain it (perhaps longer threads so the cap only exposes the port without separating, a keeper cable, etc.). Other good aspects: -on board USB charging PLUS field changeable battery -built in voltage meter (to estimate battery charge level) -appears to be water resistant -good lighting levels, I find the moonlight mode quite useful -fairly efficient (good light intensity-battery life trade offs)

A Prepper's dream
This engineering marvel should be able to satisfy most any application. As a heavy user of the 18650 battery, I know they are the GO TO when you want lots of capacity either for peak output OR very long duration. The micro USB charging port is a perfect match with my GoalZero Nomad7 portable solar panels. Never worry about having a light source while out in the back country.

This headlamp makes me angry! Cons: Controls are terrible. Brightness settings are controlled with indecipherable morse-code-like clicks on the single button. Terrible system. I rarely get it on the setting I need without an ordeal. Want a bright beam? Hold the button... crap now its dim and red. Want a low-light to hike across camp without blinding everyone? Click-click. Whoops now its bright as the sun. ClickCLickCLick. NOW ITS A F@#KING STROBE LIGHT! When have I ever had use for a strobe light while camping? NEVER! AND CERTAINLY NOT IN MY TENT! (and if I ever found myself in a situation needing a STROBE light, I would probably only be able to cycle through high, medium and low, desperately trying to turn on the strobe.) THIS LIGHT MAKES ME ANGRY. Also, I find it heavy to wear for any length of time. Pros: very bright and its rechargeable. I would be satisfied with this light if it has a slider-switch to easily change settings.

mcbsffGuys: I will say that I once I stopped camping with this light, I like it a lot more. It is great for household work. It is bright like the sun for working under the house, on cars, etc. I have no issues with it if I don't have to change settings.

And the SOS features! Ugh. Does anyone ever actually think "I'm not buying this because it doesn't have SOS." I carry a few magnesium flash fireworks which are 1000x brighter if I ever get into that situation where I need to signal someone at night.

Junk, Not useful, not usable.
Looks good, bright lights, good concept. Typical MADE IN CHINA CRAP! Had high expectations shattered when I first attempted to turn it on after carefully studying the instructions. Turned it on and ran thru the cycles and it was obvious immediately the the steady on white lite was inoperable. Will not show a steady light any level of brightness.. I think DROp must be a clearing house for unsellable items. I am going to unsubscribe after this third or fourth time disappointment. This like bad product laundering. Drop probably will not post this review. I'm done cause I bought a lot of items off DROP. Quality assurance is just not there...

WTF Drop??
Just Received the Nitecore HC65- Seems to be well made and the 5 yr warranty is reassuring BUT the unit I received was obviously used. The box was torn open and had been retaped and there was dirt on the endcap. The contents otherwise did not appear to have been unpacked. WTF??? I generally don't mind buying open box merchandise but this should have been disclosed on the original listing. I'm going to take a guess, since this is sold through Amazon, I suspect it was a returned product. Again Mass Drop WTF???

OVERKILL
Extremely powerful, albeit it will limit the brightness settings you can use depending on battery level. Standby is infinite, and the aluminum housing is top-notch, as are the gaskets and headband. Moderately long charging time but you won't have to deal with that often if you use all but the highest brightness settings.

Pretty decent
Have no real complaints, it seems reliable so far and works well for camping and such. Used for 2-3 evenings in row (not on at all time & at low(er) brightness settings for majority of time that was on) and battery was still charged. It doesn't get as bright as I imagined it might, but more than bright enough for most use cases. Just if your friend has a bright flashlight to show off, their's might likely be brighter. For the price I had hoped I might be able to eke a little more brightness out of it or be able to use a wider variety of 18650 batteries (such as unprotected or IMR ones) as have good amount of those lying around so would be nice to be able to swap them in. But not dissatisfied either.

A well executed design!
What I liked:
  • Very bright when needed.
  • The different light settings/brightness/red light/strobe/etc.
  • Once adjusted, the headstrap is much nicer than the last head lamp I used.
  • Used very powerful, rechargeable and readily available 18650 type battery.
  • Light materials and construction seem like they will last.
What I did NOT like: (minor stuff)
  • The teeny tiny font in the instruction manual. (didnt help that I flashed my own eyes on bright setting)
  • With so many light settings, you have to know the exact button pushes to get to certain light functions.
  • Pretty sure I will not remember how to easily access all the light functions without having to look at the user manual again.
I wish I would have bought one for each of my family. Turns out for the quality, features and build quilty, it was a very good deal IMO. Definetly would buy another one.
