Hello, I'm leaving my short experience with my Opus #1. Sorry for sharing it with you guys so late... I do consider myself as an audiophile, but I do lack in knowledge when it comes to DAP's or IEMs, but I'll be happy to share my personal thoughts about this product.
This is my first DAP device and I've been using it with my Noble X IEM. I've been using it for about over 3 months now and I have to say I am satisfied with it. My previous portable music device was my Galaxy S5, yes it's old and sounds terrible. Once I've switched to Opus #1, I've realized the huge difference when it comes to clarity and sound stage. I can hear the instruments and the vocals separately and noticed certain background instruments being played that I've never heard before with my Galaxy S5.
Even thought I love my first DAP, I had some annoying issues with it. First, it was the connectivity. Now, I'm not sure if my Opus #1 has some defective issues, but I had to re-plug and connect the USB cord on my Opus #1 at least twice to my desktop in order to show up in my computer. Second, there are certain errors I get once I connect it and have to restart my DAP. Third, is an another error when I play a different songs I get this random error saying that the media is unable to play so it skips it, but it works once I do it again. Fourth, it's the play/pause button. I usually click the pause button instead of taking my IEMs off when someone is talking to me. After a short conversation, I can't play my song when I click the play/pause button. I realized that once you pause your song for more than 5 seconds, you're unable to play it by click the play/pause button. The only way to play your song is literally by turning your Opus #1 screen and press the start button on the screen.
To be honest, those are minor issues. It is a complaint, but it doesn't bother me to a point where I want to get a refund.
Other things I want to share with you guys is about the leather case. I know you guys won't be getting the leather case in this drop, but be aware that the case will leave a mark easily if it's being pressured against by something. For example, I had my IEMs wrapped around the DAP and now it has a mark on the back of the case. Also, this device works well with headphones, but I would recommend for IEMs mostly. If you noticed, the fonts is golden if you look at the image I uploaded. I was hoping to be the way how it looks like on the Massdrop, but after the update it's different now.
Thank you, hope it helped a little.

I mean, I can fit the DAP in my pockets... it's just that it's pretty hard to reach the play/pause button lol.

I still try to understand the use case of a portable player without physical buttons. Is it a portable player to NOT be used on the go and just sitting on your sofa? I for one cherish quality portable players with physical buttons that a) do not waste charge on huge screens b) focus on the music and not resembling a phone and 3) I can skip a song without looking while running or on any other circumstance.
I guess I am not the target for this type of "portable" players where you have to be doing nothing but navigating visual menus.

Maybe but using a screen requires two hands it almost requires you to stop walking or doing what you are doing and focus on navigating the device... which is cool. But as with phones I for one in players want quick physical buttons I can navigate without even pulling out the device. Just as with T9 predictive in phones there was a time I could write a decent midsized reply without looking at the phone and the battery life was amazing. A screen like the xduoo x3 is all I need. And given I loathe subscription music models and the need for internet for a device to work this is just not for me... I like paying for my physical copies of an album and or HD tracks so... I guess I'm gonna pass this one. Huge screen and wireless are just deal breakers for me in how the kill the battery life.

Monet1)Battery charge being wasted on a huge screen only matters if you use the player for other android apps, negligible for the few seconds it takes to find a track, since using a touch screen to find 1 of 25000 tracks is a lot faster than the scroll wheel of previous gen. 2) If it works better than buttons who cares if it looks like an iphone. 3) Not sure about the opus, but the fiio x5 has (in this order) Play/pause -- volume wheel -- previous track -- next track ... all in line on the side of the device, which I often "shuffle all tracks" and explore without ever activating the screen.
Overall I wouldn't get hung up on the screen thing until you try it, I was very very excited to use a a scroll wheel device (gen ii) until I tried finding a track and had to scroll letter to letter, or favorite a track, which was a chain of wheel scrolls and buttons, the screen does make it a lot easier if you can come to terms with 8 realistic hours of music listening with a lot of track changes and library exploring as opposed to the 10-12 of a small screen device.

Can someone tell me what's the point of these "HD" players? You can play uncompressed and FLAC on my phones. As for DSD, the measily selection of available tracks for downloading is a huge turnoff. What's the advantage of one of these vs carrying a portable dac/amp along with your phone?

No it wouldn't, not of the specs indicate that this is a true balanced design with 4 amps. Yeah it might configured as such with the DACs, but all the disclosed differences between SE and balanced are less than negligible. Of course no power outputs[balanced] or even the Amps brand or model number were disclosed. So yes again the question is valid why this device is better than a phone and a decent DAC/amp, like the Fiio E18 [sorry don't care for DSD]? Not a whole lot in a practical real world!

TheHunYou are correct that the manufacturer has not been forthcoming about the amplifier topology. However, the diagram they have on their website indicates that the balanced and unbalanced amplification is handled by separately (though, this isn't as clear as it could be). There is also some support that balanced and unbalanced DAC output stage is handled differently, given that the balanced output is rated at 330mW at 16 Ohm, while the unbalanced is rated at 275 mW at 16 Ohm.
On the other hand, having a balanced DAC setup (as indicated by dual DAC chips, and in the manufacturer diagrams on their website) being forced through unbalanced amplification stage (ie, only 1 amplifier circuit per channel instead of 2 per channel), then having it fed to a balanced output would be kind of useless, bordering on misleading.

And this is why he is stuck. I was in the same situation until I tried them all. After trying, the X7 was the obvious choice for me. My experience does not match yours at all. I guess preference matters a lot, and so they must try them out and decide for themselves.

$140 just to get the case??? Out of the question. Would have joined the drop if the standard option came with a case. This DAP was calling my name, but I have to pass on principle.

Scarce: Now that's a great in-depth and insightful reply. Thanks for the leads. Since you are so obviously aware of the multiple possible options in this realm, pray tell, what is your set up? I'm not looking to go portable though. I guess I unintentionally indicated that based on the fact I mentioned using an iPhone 6. Listen - what I'm really seeking is an ultimate sounding system for hi-rez audio files. A client of mine let me listen to his Pono with a Senn HD 800 dual cabled and I was blown away. With so much info out there and so many options, how in the world do I replicate such a sonic experience without breaking the bank?

climbthemtnsYou have to go to the shop to listen to all the headphones there before purchasing the one that you would like.
The reason you have to go to the shop to listen is because the different people prefer different sound. Some may like the laid back character of the HD 650 while some may prefer the clarity and space that the HD 800 offers.
The HD 800 is a very sibilant sounding headphone with a treble peak that can be unbearable to quite a few people. A headphone focusing on the Soundstage, excellent for listening to well recorded orchestral pieces due to the many instruments playing all at once, the sennheiser HD 800 really gives a great feeling of space and you hear good detail in the massive space that the HD 800 presents the music in. The HD 800 is very source picky and requires a good amp to drive them or they will sound terrible.
The HD 650 has a very laid back character that lacks the massive soundstage and clarity of the HD 800 but offers a thumping bass paired with sweet mids with body, unlike the HD 800 where mids can feel thin and airy. The HD 650 is not source picky but will scale well with amps, a proper amp is required to take full advantage of the 650.
The focal elear is also another highly regarded headphone that is apparently not source picky. I didnt really hear the focal elear properly for a long period of time thus I cannot comment but it is a very pleasant headphone I have had the pleasure of listening to.
The STAX earspeaker lineup is very very very amazing and the entry level srs-3100 system that I have had the pleasure of auditioning is very good and offers better detail than the HD 800, however they offer a unique presentation of the sound that may not be for everyone. The L700 is said to have blown everyone away and well is very expensive ...$6000 for the energizer and headphones. Do note that the sennheiser orpheus HE-1 are regarded as the worlds best sounding headphone with a price tag to justify the performance ($75000) but the stax L700 system can hold its own against the worlds best sounding headphone with some saying that they offer similar levels of enjoyment.
Headphones that you should try : HD 800s, HD 650, HD 600, Audeze LCD 2, AKG K712, focal elear, and the STAX lineup such as the stax L300 and the endgame L700

I have also wondered what the balanced output's effect on the sound is..? I have read that unless there are several connected components or very long lengths to span, as in a pro audio(stage or recording), but when there is only one, then it can actually reduce the quality of the sound because to make it balanced it has to go through more circuitry and transformers which degrades the sound quality to worse than unbalanced. Just wondering if anyone has ever actually A/Bed balanced vs unbalanced in a home system where there aren't a lot of connected components and long lengths involved?

JayDayJust an fyi, (very expensive high quality wide band small signal) transformers are only in the picture to balance an unbalanced signal; or go from a balanced dignal to unbalanced and use both +/- signal components, instead of just throwing one of them away. Not the case here. What you are reading is not apples to apples to what we have here.
Balanced is useful to negate power supply noise and spurious signals induced in the complimentary circuit, awhen that induced signal is in the same polarity. Since the output is complimentary, any signal induced in the same polarity will be negated where the two are summed, at the headphone.
Since in this case the player won't double the output voltage in balanced mode, that benefit can't be realized here. But what I just cited regarding negation of power supply noise and induced spurious signals or distortions in the same polarity, will be realized.

General concensus is it has very good sound quality. Software has some quirks, but firmware is updated often. I still can't get my eq to work tho. And how it is supposed to be used, needing to stop the music to activate the eq change, is insane.
