Does anyone know why these headphones sound so bad?
I've tried this pair a few times, both noise cancelling and non-noise-cancelling. There's something wrong with the frequency response which also affects the sound stage. It's sort of like you're listening through music through a long tube, like it's too warm in some places. They sound similarly bad to the Sennheiser Momentums which have the same tonality issue, although the Momentums are a little worse.
I suspect it's related to cup shape and driver position, maybe too close? Although Grados don't have this issue. Maybe it's bad reflections off the back of the cup, just poor design? Maybe the extra enclosure for electronics doesn't allow enough room to dampen the wave coming off the back of the driver.
I have the non-ANC version of these. Light enough, easy to drive from a phone, even have the "Beats" similar enough looks. Paid more than the price of these, and satisfied with the audio. Doesn't quite give the bass oomph like the Fidelio X2 but it's decent for the size and price.
The only issue I have is the microphonics are about the worst of any cables on my headphones. The only other ones I have with as much microphonics are a custom pair for my Focal Elegia and Hifiman Sundara. Similar materials so it's not surprising. Just be aware of that. Get a custom cable that's braided instead of plastic/TPU material and it should take care of a lot of the microphonics.
It's a bit strange question, but did anyone try the ANC of these while the neighbor upstairs is drilling the floor over your head (I mean, the loudest it can be)? That's the only thing I would need them for, because I know their ANC isn't as good as Bose's, but I care only whether it's enough for my case :)
how clear is the mic at separating your voice from ambient sound and more importantly ambient commotion (an open moderately noisy public space like a Starbucks or something similar)
DenonFanboyI just got mine. I tested them with a few songs in the OFF position. I found them flat in terms of balance, and that they have a somewhat veiled sound; surprisingly pleasing. Clear but not bright or harsh.
But in the ON position, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The minute details pop out and the aural image widens and deepens. I did find the on-board amp very noisy, but for $80, they're a bargain sound-wise.
EDIT: They instantly reminded me of my Denon AH-D340, but I really disliked the sound signature of those, and gifted them away.
icebobNoise canceling only works for plane engine noise, air conditioning hum, fans, wind etc. Not people talking and especially not dogs. You either have been misinformed or you didn't do your research. Only earbuds with a good seal will block out harsh noises.
I bought these new four years ago. I never use the ANC. The sound on these is great. The build is pretty good. The comfort is... Well, it's fine, but they aren't what I'd call comfortable. The pads suck, and I haven't found any replacement pads that fit nicely. At $80, these are a steal.
