on my schiit fulla 2, powered with usb or phone charger sounds great on front interface, but rear outputs hiss so I just don't use them. tried it 2 ways: on powered speakers, and to output to another headphone amp using fulla as a dac only, but fulla made them hiss.
Just a question, Since i am looking to get into the audiophile style of things.
The quality from my PC just doesnt give me the sound i want, would this AMP/DAC be a good starting point? and if yes, which headphones do you guys recommend using with it?
Kinda new to the audiophile stuff:D
Thanks a lot for the reply:D will take a look at the headphones you mentioned!
Sadly i cant find the Philips SHP9500s at any store that ship them to the netherlands :( sad times.
I'm not sure about the failure rates but I just received my M3 that I bought on ebay during one of their $15 off 50 coupon deals and I absolutely love it. I just downgraded from the Schiit Modi 2 Uber & Vali 2 combo. My ears are just not good enough to discern the differences and I listen to my Swan M200MKIII's much more. So the M3 was a better value for the money for me.
I want to join this drop really bad but i'm on the fence about the build quality of the product. I've read comments here as well as other places saying that these units have a somewhat high failure rate. Can anyone else chime in on this that has perhaps owned this dac for a while?
PapercutSMSL seems to be hit and miss. As a amateur purveyor of a few cheap dacs, I can say that SMSL attempts to offer tremendous value for the money in audio design and choice of dac chips they put in their products at the expense of quality workmanship or overall build. I have a SMSL SD-793II with an unusable headphone jack (static, might just be loose on the inside) that I hardly ever used but still operates great as a dac and sounds fantastic for the money. I also have a SMSL M8 that hasn't skipped a beat and sounds even better. If you spend over $150 on a SMSL product, you're probably in good shape, but less than that, and you're taking a chance on a bad egg, but even so, if nothing goes wrong you'll have a dac that sounds as good as a dac costing hundreds of dollars more. To me, it's worth a roll of the dice.
Any comments on the amp. I'm interested if the amp here is as good as the one in the 793ll. Seems like everything smsl makes is small but I really like how small this unit is.
I bought one of these for my college student son, it shipped to him, but he can’t get it to work. SMSL website is effectively useless for troubleshooting and the DAC came without a manual. He has a Windows 10 laptop and an iPhone 6, and this DAC isn’t working with either of them. I’m 3,000 miles from the DAC so I do not have tactile possession of the device. Where do we go to figure this out?
Thanks for the insight and tips. We never installed the M3 drivers at all, as the SMSL website has no driver to download specifically for the M3. There are drivers for all sorts of other Mproducts, but nothing for the M3. So the presence of M3 drivers should not be our issue.
dpj1I just checked SMSL site and it doesn't show the M3 driver anymore - they probably figured out that this driver was faulty.
I'll check out the M3 with another PC with Windows 10 and fiddle with it, maybe I'll have some insight that might help you.
I currently use an Oppo HA-2SE for my desktop setup (even though I also use it for portable use)
I have a pair of Fidelio X2's and Jubilee 58X's on the way. I am going to see any improvement or different sound signature by using this amp?
cwelton17I can see where you're coming from, although I do prefer them over any other device I own (all sub-400) so in terms of price to preference, this does live up to my preference scale.
I love heavy bass response since I'm into EDM, so it could be a preference thing.
