Has anyone else tried the BlueTooth functionality of the M400? The unit I have connects but won't produce any output. There are no firmware updates. Thoughts?

I recently bought a Sony ubp x800m2 Blu-ray and SACD player. The only problem is it doesn’t have RCA outputs. It does have an HDMI audio only output. Would this DAC allow me to use an HDMI cable from the SACD audio out into the I2S input? Would that allow me to play 2 channel SACD’s on my 2 channel system?

The coax out on all Blu-ray players is limited to PCM, so that defeats the purpose of the SACD function. SACD is only output through HDMI. That’s why I’m wondering about the I2S. I think those audio extractors only work with PCM too, but I’m not sure. I know there is a way to carry SACD over HDMI into I2S, just not sure if this DAC does it.

tedhershI2S and HDMI are not cross compatible, totally different transfer protocol. The only things they have in common is the connector (although I2S comes in other forms) and both are a form of digital connection. Most Denon/Marantz receivers (top half of their line) have supported SACD playback over HDMI for the last several model years. Beyond that you need a DAC with an HDMI input (like a Bryston BDA-3) or try to make a break out box work.
Be careful with breakout boxes, beyond the Geerfab D.B.O.B. it will be a crapshoot on what formats the others support over I2S. The issue with I2S in general is there is no pinout standard, guaranteeing a breakout box and a DAC will work together is again... a crapshoot.

Dont buy it just yet. There WILL BE SOME FAULTS IN IT. Just look for the previous top models from SMSL...the SU8 and the M500. Just read forums for them. Both their initial released stocks were faulty and they had to release V2s for both models with HW changes. This mean people who bought it in say the first year or so were stuck with faulty pieces with no solutions. That with sub standard customer support from SMSL makes other brands like Topping (D90 with same specs) a much safer buy!
