I'm just here thinking how good of a deal this is at $180 with the $20 discount is from that summerof22 coupon code, it came to $173.20 (tax and shipping included) and as CheapAudioMan put the Geshelli J2 in S Tier and youtuber Passion For Sound did perceive almost any difference between this and the J2, I can say this is a winner.

I am sorry for asking about a payment issue, but whenever I tried to purchase for this item, my request was rejected in the final stage. Is this on sale only for US customers? I attempted to buy it with various credit cards and even PayPal, but no cigar.

It doesn't work. Everyone's been talking about it because a user mentioned it, but it's not applicable. $180 is still very low however, so holding off on a purchase over an already heavily reduced item seems strange to me. I get it, more money saved, but there are gifthorses and things.

Totally agree. This is still an insane price for feature rich DAC. I was abled to apply the code and thought to share with this great community.

Was thinking about getting this to pair with the THX AAA One Linear amp. Anyone with experience on that pairing?

This unit vs a Bifrost 1 Multibit USB 5 which converts DSD to PCM? Linux & JRiver support? Using Ubuntu server and JRiver Media Center. I run a 2 channel setup out of the music server to the DAC via USB and then out to the Pre with unbalanced RCA. Already happy with my setup but have been considering a DSD capable DAC. I realize the price on this SMSL is good, but I would not want a drop in sound quality.

Not sure my message came across clearly, my apologies. I already own the Bifrost MB 😁. Looking to validate the expense (even at this discounted price) of the SMSL as a 2nd DAC for DSD playback. Appreciate your response though!

Oh, yes, it seemed like you were comparing two unpurchased DACs. My bad! I guess it's really down to how much you value DSD playback. There are cheaper DACs for that purpose, though this one is a particularly good price on a very decent DAC.

Need to resist coz I already have SU-9! At this bargain price it is just no brainer, even as a backup DAC (why do I need a backup DAC? idk.......).

You need a back up DAC for that one time when lightning struck and it killed the other one.... True story 😑

I gave up resisting. I also have a SU-9 and bought this drop..... Of course I need a backup to my backup DAC. Seriously, many reviews mention that the SU-8S is harsher than the SU9 in the treble. Will be interesting to see if that is true. The SU-9 is the smoothest yet detailed DAC by Chifi.

Trying to understand this process better: so when dac specs say up to 32 bit 768 kHz sampling.... does it mean that whatever bitrate/sampling frequency that goes into the input can be encoded as analog up to and including those specs? Or can it upsample say a 44.1 kHz / 16 bit input signal to a higher bitrate/frequency before converting to analog? I'm thinking it's the former and not the latter but am not certain.

Thanks for your response. That’s what I thought. While much of my library of FLAC files is 24-32 bit and at least 96 kHz sampling frequency, a good part of it is ripped directly from CDs. At CD quality 16 bit and 44.1 kHz, aren’t all DACs equally capable or are there other characteristics that set some DACs above the rest. Just trying to better understand

Some will claim the chip used for the dac conversion makes a significant difference…but I wouldn’t worry too much as long as it’s reasonably modern and can handle what you throw at it. Probably more important to most these days is whether the dac has support for LDAC, for example, which is a codec used to enable high rate wireless transmissions. While it’s not a necessity, especially if you only listen wired, it’s a bonus that’s included in most modern dacs & a non negotiable for some people.

Would this be an upgrade for my Chord Mojo? I already have the DROP THX AAA 789, bluetooth is not important to me. Thanks for your suggestions.

Added the SU-9 to my collection for Black Friday price ($390), after a lot of research. Per Reviews: "Both have a fairly different sound presentation even though they both use ESS DACs. The SU-8S has a higher focus on mids and treble and the SU-9 has better detail retrieval yet doesn’t come off as bright and goes for a relaxed sound signature." At this price ($180), SU-8S is really interesting.

I’m on the fence. Have the su-8 v2 but it doesn’t match the thx-788 design. The su-8s does. Would I be getting a sound improvement alongside the aesthetic improvement?
