Product Description
It’s not often that a fully balanced DAC/amp comes along at a price like this. The Topping DX7s improves upon the well-regarded DX7 by taking both the DAC and headphone amp sections up a notch Read More

I'm new to this balanced amp/dac. Any opinions on this vs. Schiit Audio Jotunheim Balanced AMP (w/DAC module)? Thanks.

Dragon2020 You realize that 99.9% of all the numbers people have quoted on this page are completely "un-hearable", don't you? Hopefully you just went with the Jotunheim and stopped reading the irrelevant numerical comparisons and data people post in these comments--they are humorous (I'll admit that) but it's a shameful waste of good listening time--regardless of the headphones you own!

I was very interested in this, but i found a deal on a fostex hp a4bl for about the same price as this and since it's a made in japan product and has almost the same features i just couldn't pass up on it. Wish i had a chance to test both to see which i liked better and buy the one i liked the most but there was no way for me to do it.

Aah I don't want to say one is better when both are fantastic. My reality is which one do I listen to more often, which is a combination of features and sound preference.

Steve007Yes I was not saying that one is better then the other for sound. For imput outputs must be seen what is needed... Equipment can be added to add more outputs.

I know I am on your site :) I will wait for your measurements to see if this is a real upgrade to my DX7 or not.

Being they sent you one I can only assume it'll be as good or better than the dx7. If their measurements are as good as the new specs it'll be a win. I already went in on this and hoping for the best. I'm counting on if anything they implemented the internals just as good or better than the original

Massdrop / @CEE_TEE We need to talk about warranty on audio enthusiast gear. Selling gear worth hundreds of dollars w/o at least one year warranty against defects is a bit shady. While I'm aware Massdrop offers 30-day refunds if something happens, after that folks are left with a brick if they have an issue. Have seen the same with other Topping and SMSL products. While you cannot control what warranty the manufacturer provides, you can completely control what products you sell and have the ability to refuse to service a product if the warranty isn't baseline industry standard and verifiable. It's the least you can do as vendor to make sure your customers don't end up with a dud and no one to turn to.

Read it, sounds sketchy. Seller is named as the agent to handle repair claims. I doubt Massdrop wants to handle anything having to do with repairs.

I was strongly considering buying one of these until I saw that the output impedance is so high. Most of my headphones have a 50Ω or lower input impedance and won't pair well with the 10-20Ω output impedance of the DX7s.
I was also looking at the Aune S6, but the amp section on that is limited in power output compared to many competitors.
There's also the Jotunheim, but that lacks DSD support. The search for an all-in-one balanced DAC/amp continues.
Don't own this particularly DAC/Amp but I do have both a 10ohm and 120 ohm SE option on my Cayin amp. With the TH-X00 (similar in specs to the D7000) I get like kind frequency response issues when compared to my other amps with sub 2 ohm OI. The bass isn't as impactful, a touch more bloat and the treble region gets a little more disjointed from the rest of the frequencies. Sadly will have to re-terminate to balanced or pickup a TR-X00 to be able to compare the 10 ohm SE and .3 ohm XLR outs on the Cayin.

Apodizing filter is the fad these days. That’s probably why it’s the default option though the differences between the filter settings are quite subtle. You have to listen deep and long enough to pick them out. I find #5 Linear phase fast roll off to be the most forward sounding and fatiguing and #7 the least digital and most organic sounding. Listen to songs with lots of kick drums and electric guitar solos and avoid modern digital music when tuning cos digital music supposed to sound.. digital anyway.

NO WARRANTY AFTER 30 DAYS:
Mine stopped working after about 60 days.
See email from Massdrop below.
Hilary L. (Massdrop Community Support) Aug 26, 3:28 PM PDT Hi Ben, Thanks for reaching out to Massdrop Community Support, this is Hilary and I am happy to help you today! I am very sorry for my delayed response. I'm sorry to hear your having problems with your Topping. It looks like this didn't have an included warranty. For products that do not have an included manufacturer's warranty, members have 30 days from the date of delivery to report an issue. For products that include a manufacturer's warranty, members must report an issue within the stated warranty period. After reviewing your transaction, it appears that the time-frame for reporting an issue has passed, which means we are not able to provide a replacement or facilitate a return. Thank you for your understanding of this policy. If we can help you with anything else in the future, please contact us. Best Regards,Hilary

Ginpo236I just contacted Massdrop support to know if this drop has the manufacturer legal warranty.
If it has no warranty it is a big risk to buy the Topping on Massdrop
PS: I've checked others products on Massdrop site and unlike these ones, this Topping DX7s defenitively doensn't have the warranty in the paragraph Included

Okay, gonna finally take the leap and get the HD6xx. So I'd like your help here folks: THIS, or Schitt Jotunhiem with balanced DAC, or patiently (NO KIDDING) wait for the THX789?
Just curious, which FiiO unit did you use... and with what device and connection (analog, USB, etc.)? I owned the Senn Momentum 2.0 for a few months, but it's stock pads were claustrophobic and sound-hindering, so I replaced them Brainwavz Sheepskin Angled Leather Pads, and the sound and comfort dramatically improved. Happy to give you some recommendations. First though, could you please give me a few 'likes'? I did so for you. Thanks!

mattrisSorry, didn't know about the likes. I used a pretty basic Fiio portable dac/amp, maybe a Q1...it was a while ago. Connected USB from my phone, also tried USB from my comp. So there are lots of things that may have contributed to the disappointment. I'll keep note on the earpads. I don't mind them so far, but an upgrade wouldn't be a bad thing. Thanks

Some impressions:
  1. If you want this unit. This is a great price.
  2. I compared this unit against the SMSL SU-8. Here is the setup I used. Meridian 500 CD transport with coax out to the DX7S and optical to the SU-8. Shunyata Venom RCAs to a Schiit switch. Shunyata Venom RCAs to a THX 789 amp. Granted not using the balanced outs from the DACs for this comparison. I will do so later with the balanced outs. But using the RCAs made it easy to do quick back and forth A-B comparisons. Headphones were Hifiman 560s with balanced connection on the THX 789. Both DACs were set at their default settings.
The bottom line IMO is that the SU-8 is the superior DAC. More of a sense of openness, air and soundstage with the SU-8. I think if space isn’t an issue and you want an all in one unit and you aren’t doing comparisons the DX7S will be great for most people. But I got the SU-8 at a steal of a price. (Not on MD). You combine that with the THX 789 and that is a superior system IMO. The only question is what will the A-B be with the balanced outs. Also how will the SU-8 fare against the SMSL D1 DAC? Your thoughts? Go for it!

RJ-Chicagovery interesting. I did a comparison of the SMSL SU-8 vs DX7S and a went a bit more in depth as to why. Using it straight of the box, thru USB the SU-8 sounded better. But it was a bit candy coated and lacking the smidgen of detail that the DX7s suggested, but the DX7S was a bit harsher, Then I did a test - I ran my usb output from the mac mini into my matrix SPDIF reclocker and then ran the SPDIF coax output into the SU-8 and DX7S. The DX7S clearer up and had the better sound, more detail. The Su-8 also sounded better but not as big an improvement as the DX7S. Example; On sara bareilles uncharted song, there are triangles. You cant hear them on the SU-8 but they are clear on the DX7S thru the matrix reclocker, Finally, to corroborate, I ran USb straight from the mac mini into the DX7S and then ran the SPDIF out from the DX7S into my reference Yggadrasil. It sounded awful. So my conclusion is that the DX7S has a poor USB implementation even though it claims to use the same XMOS as the Su-8. Bottom line is if you use USB out, and dont want a reclocker (e.g. simple box, get the SU-8). For me, I want to occasionally listen to DSD which the Yggadrasil doesnt do, and I already use a reclocker, so I will keep the DX7S. Topping should really fix the USB reclocker on the DX7S, whatever the problem is. The DAC section in the DX7S is really nice.

whodiiniGood detailed test. Thanks. I think that anytime you are running USB out of a computer or cell phone one really should use a AQ jitterbug or Schiit Eiter or something to clean up the noise and jitter. As per my initial test above, I always, if possible try to use as DAC imputa coaxial SPDIF first, optical second and USB last. I have since sold the DX7s. I already have a Jotenheim Multibit for all in one needs. I like it a lot. Otherwise, I didn’t want to keep the average DX7s amp around when I have better amps. I also have a small collection of DACs which overall I think are better than the DX7s. I’m not trying to disparage the DX7s and call it a bad unit. For me it’s a matter of good vs better. The DX7s may be a great unit for some folks.
