Product Description
A great pairing for laptops and smartphones, the Topping NX4 DSD is a compact DAC/amp loaded with impressive specs. It’s equipped with the well-regarded Sabre ES9038Q2 DAC, along with an XU208 USB bridge, and it supports some of the highest-resolution audio—including 32 bit/768 kHz, DSD256 (DoP), and DSD512 (native) Read More
MrGrimbleI don't have particularly sensitive ears, but I tried using the NX4 with my LG V20 and Sennheiser HD6xx headphones - I cannot hear a difference.
I suspect that these will not adequately power AKG 340's at 400 ohms. I'm not sure which number I need to look for in a portable amp to find one that will. Any suggestions as to what I need to look for would be appreciated.
JimClarkI have AKG K340s that I have lovingly nurtured for nearly 40 years. This little DAC/amp brings out the best in these very special headphones. I have never heard them sound so good; for some reason this combination results in the best balance I have ever heard between the electrostatic and dynamic drivers. I use the high gain setting and with the volume knob at 4 o’clock experience all the power I need to mimic what it used to be like playing in the brass section of a large orchestra.
Bought on amazon.... 1st one channel imbalance- significant.. The OTG cables only the usb to micro and 3.5 worked. the pairing with the 6XX lacks punch, needs more power but since it is portable use it with the line out for better sound, with less power the DAC doesnt drive it.... with my ultrasone sounds awesome, tight bass really well balanced.
I own a silver NX4DSD and I absolutely love it. (I upgraded from the sabaj da2 which has the ess9018q2c.) It drives my K7XX's very well. Unfortunately I don't have any high impedence headphones to test it with, so I can't comment on that. I mainly use it to drive my K7XX's and my iBasso IT01's. Also I paid 170 on aliexpress so this is a solid deal. This is a great dac/amp and I reccomend it to anyone who needs a powered portable dac/amp.
My experience is a little buggy, not sure if its specific to my phone or Android 6.x, but I've heard several other users report difficulty w/ xmos and android too.
I basically have to launch Hiby first to get my phone to recognize the DAC, except I select No when it asks me to use it. (If I select Yes it doesn't work!). After I do that, I can use any app with my dac. I had the same issue on my Sabaj Da2 & NX4DSD, which is why I think its an xmos issue. I normally use VLC (so I can stream via my NFS server over wifi), or if i'm playing files from my internal memory I use foobar2000 (the android app).
This could very well be my phone, but I don't have another one that I can test unfortunately.
No, I can't find where I read the breakdown numbers but I can tell you that my Fiio X7mk2 supplies 17mW of power onto my 300ohm Sennheiser hd600 and it does not run them good. However on balanced mode the Fiio supplies 63mW of power onto my 300ohms and it runs well enough. So I would not buy anything with less than 63mW if using 300ohms. I'm not a tech so you can take this for a grain of salt but the proof is in the pudding for me as I have been able to compare. As I own the hd600 at 300ohms and the Fiio X7mk2 dap.

TonyRizoI believe you. However, power output is not the full story - it's the voltage of your source and how much current it can source before clipping. When you listen in balanced is your volume maxed out? No? Then you're not using 63 mW. Volume dials are also seldom linear in power levels...
Using specs from here - http://fiio.net/en/products/71/parameters - in single ended mode the X7 mk2 has 6Vpp or 2.1 Vrms. In balanced mode you have 10Vpp or 3.4Vrms. Both specs are less than is available for the NX4 DSD (2.9Vrms low gain, 5.8 Vrms high gain).
I'm not saying one is better or worse, but they should drive the hd6xx equally well (and loud!). However, your understanding of what the specs mean is a little off. Happy listening, at any rate!
I'm looking for something not to expensive, but portable to power the Audeze LCD-XC's I have coming. Wondering if this will do the trick. Anyone have any idea or experience with these? For home use i have the Schiit Asgard 2, and also a Vali2 so I should be ok on that front. I just need something portable that won't break the bank, like the cans already have.
YaBoyRobYes, if you are fine with something that doesn't have a balanced output and for casual music enjoyment, NX4 DSD will do the trick. This can generally drive any headphones on the market. For a general idea, for the 300ohms headphones (HD650) I have, putting the volume knob to halfway on high-gain is already extremely loud and anything more than that would just be damaging to my ears.
Can this be used 24/7 like a desktop dac/amp? Like I plan to use this most of the time and rarely portable, so can I use it all the time by leaving the charging wire connected?
AzeendeenI wasn't able to find a definitive answer to this question, but given that in this day-and-age devices like cell phones and laptop computers are designed to allowed to be left plugged into power supplies indefinitely w/o suffering battery damage, I err on the side of convenience.
NX4 DSD manual implies similar w/it's use of the term "intelligent charging".
I don't have that problem with mine. Maybe just a bad unit? I've had mine for probably going on a year now and not an issue with it even after going back and forth between firmwares. It really is a solid piece of kit.
jaydunndidditThat's good. Yeah I got a really bad unit. The USB-A connector on my blue cable was also almost coming apart from the blue endcap so that also sucked. Two loose headphone ports and falling apart cable were dealkillers for me so I'll wait for a sale because it does sound clean and tight.
