Very disapointed in the v shaped ascent stakes. The holes act as perforations, i bent 2 of them in soft ground on their first use. They bend very easily. Bad choice on my part. Much weaker than my old aluminum v stakes.

RobushAgreed. The V stakes are extremely weak I've bent 4.

RobushAgreed, the V shaped ascents were a poor choice on the JMT. Bent 2 in less than a week... very weak.
Has anyone tried these on Vampires? I'm a little on the fence for the purchase.
That's a disappointment. Thanks for the information though.

The silver tips work on werewolves, but not vampires. Only the wooden ones work on vampires.

I completely disagree with those complaining about the sample set..this is exactly what I wanted. Here's why: 1) They have long offered full sets (6) of any of these options. If you want a bunch of shepherd's hooks you should have bought them last time, or buy them the next time the drop inevitably comes up. 2) Most ultra light campers already have a good set of stakes (if you don't - get some already, as noted above). On the other hand, sometimes you need a specialized stake for a specialized purpose. You should always carry some variety. The nails, in particular, are of significant value... They hammer straight in and are less prone to bend around like a hook. Great for starting holes, for example. Point is, these are additive to a great main set. 3) Who wants to have to pay for 6 of each of these different types, when you're simply trying to add a few specialist stakes to your existing set? Why buy 6 hooks and 6 nails and 6 J stakes when you've already got a great main set? This is a great value for adding some variety to the stake options in your pack. And, as said before, buy 6 of your preferred type on the next drop....but you'll always wish you had a few of these other options available...trust me.

KleekumExtremely good advice. Having been in situations where the terrain has dictated the need for variety, I can personally attest to that and have carried a small variety of stakes at all times for many years, now. Not to sound too dramatic, but with the addition of just a few ounces, you can avoid potential disaster. I'm picking up this set for my son who presently only carries the bare minimum number of "Y" stakes (Groundhogs) and ran into some trouble just last weekend when he ended up having to use some cord tied to a rock when a good needle would have served him well. Since none of his buddies had any extra needles either, he ended up with rain on his pack in his vestibule.

Why in the world would you sell 2 of each instead of letting the buyer choose which 8 they would prefer...
s.walkerAgreed. I don't want or need any tent stakes but was intrigued by the word "custom" in the description. Turns out you can't even customize your order

s.walkerHey Everyone - thank you for all of your comments and I will try to address each point in this one post. A lot of people have joined this drop, so obviously it has a place. To those who are joining, I'd love to hear why you want this variety pack. To those who aren't: what unique 8- or 10-pack would you like to see in a future drop?
@s.walker - While it would be great to offer each of you a custom 8-pack, it is not logistically feasible, nor financially advantageous for you, if we were to do that. It's just impossible to imagine a group buy that is also customized to each member, for a commodity like tent stakes. You can order 8 stakes in whatever combination you want directly from Vargo.
What we can do is offer a variety of stakes in a set pack, which Vargo is building in bulk for us, and hence we're able to get a good deal for everyone. Maybe you want to check out some Vargo stakes but you're not sure which one is best for your needs. Maybe you want to add a little variety to your stake set. I for one have a ton of the round aluminum stakes from my 2 TarpTents, and Y aluminum stakes from my BD mountaineering tent. I need some other stakes, but I don't want 6 of one kind.
@Ogen_the_Matic - You are right that the name of the drop can be interpreted differently, so we've changed it from "custom" to "sampler" which is admittedly more accurate. Thanks for pointing this out.
@raptelan - The drop states that you get "3 styles" of stakes - the peg, shephard's hook, and v-stake. The peg comes in two thicknesses. We have never offered a variety pack like this before. We have offered your choice of six-pack among these various styles, and you would get 6 of the same stake.
@tskiller - See my comment above to s.walker. Many members want to try out new stakes, want to add variety to their setup, or are looking to augment their existing 6-packs.
@Brandonw - literally every other time we have sold Vargo or Toaks stakes, it has been for a 6-pack of the same kind. That is the norm, and we're trying something new here. If you want 6 of the same, have a little patience for that drop to start in a few weeks. Thanks!

@Adamusg , how long to get them? well the drop ends 5 days from now. so I would guess between 2 to 5 weeks considering the turn around time on all the items i have bought.
they "massdrop" have seemed to move away from actually giving it buyers the savings they used to. every single drop I have looked at now days is the same. they do a simple ---zon search and price the items 1 to 2 dollars less.
you have to ask yourself if that dollar or 2 is worth waiting weeks more to get your product. apparently many are willing to wait much longer to get products, as they keep offering more and more items. if people were not buying via massdrop they would not still be in business offering so many items.
don't be shocked but they have deleted posts such as this over time from many that have been around since the beginning with them and have seen the changes. so read this post fast as it may just disappear as well.

@Rkulick this "dollar or two" is on ANY drop regardless of cost, at least all of them I have had enough interest in to consider purchase. a good case in point is the black diamond hiking poles. every time they have listed them they are within 2 bucks of the zon. and when I would look at "outdoor" shops online I could find them even cheaper than the MD price offered.
the main point is they do not pass along savings to buyers like they used to. bear in mind when WE look at prices those prices are PER UNIT not the buying in bulk price that MD gets them for, leave no doubt they get them cheaper, thus more money for MD and less savings for the group buy purchasers. which takes us right back to the first post. search zon beat the offered price by a buck or two.
this site had just gotten of the ground when I started using it. they would offer between 3 and 10 items TOPS, im not talking per "community" as they call them but total items on site.
times have changed from "lets be a middle man and help people get a better price." to "lets be a middle man and pocket the savings off the better bulk price."

Stone_MaNAgreed. I remember when the savings were better, the drops were a result of actual polls, and there were drops on cool bespoke things like kickstarter projects. Now they just flog off peoples excess stock and take a fat skim of the cream from the top.

Estimated ship date= March 23rd. I leave to thru hike the Appalachian trail April 3rd. Do I risk it? How accurate are the estimated ship dates?

AdamusgEverything I have ordered on massdrop has shipped before the ship date. Not that it's good gauge to use, but an FYI. Since tent stakes are a rather small part of importance in your AT thru hike kit, if I was in the same situation I would order them. worse case is you use whatever you have and have them sent to you at your first mail drop. Good luck on your thru hike Adam, enjoy !

For the extra $1.50 or so, I'd rather have the free 2 day shipping and not wait for the drop to close, then wait for the drop orders to get assembled, then wait for the slowest shipping rate.

$14.99 + $2.97 = $17.96 vs. $17.86 on Amazon. So, "same" price and missing the Prime shipping and lack of hassle. Not a deal.

Titanium stakes are useless against vampires and werewolves. Just thought I'd point that out in case...

A sampler pack is as useful as tits on a boar hog

never thought of that. I take it back, sort of :). But for someone who needs 6-8 stakes for my tarp, I have no use for a sampler pack. I'd love to be able to get 8 of one type!

mikegartmanjust buy more than one of these samplers. i like having options - really, a stake is a stake, but sometimes it is easier to have options. i bought two, so i wind up with 16 stakes. along with the stakes i already have, should be good.

You can get these at Zpacks for $2.50 a piece. Or better, get the lighter 5.4 grams shepherd at Zpacks for $2 a piece. They work great, just got back yesterday from backpacking. I use mostly the lighter ones, but I have two of the 8 grams for the vestibules.
